  • Dark morgues, xray rooms and vintage medical equipment scatter this old hospital complex . Constructed over a hundred years ago. Firstly for the mentally disabled, the hospitals use changed in the mid century with infectious diseases such as turbicliosis and polio. After vaccines came out for both diseases the hospital switched back to helping those with mental illness, this was short lived as deinstitutionalization caused closure in the 1990s. And today we go inside to see what vintage medical equipment is left inside.

    The classrooms would’ve been for the kids. That’s why there was a boys bathroom as well. There would’ve been some kind of basics school program for the disabled people that they decided were educable.
    Brace shop office would’ve been where they made leg braces like AFO‘s.

    Cystoscopy (sis-TOS-kuh-pee) is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the lining of your bladder and the tube that carries urine out of your body (urethra). A hollow tube (cystoscope) equipped with a lens is inserted into your urethra and slowly advanced into your bladder.
    That might explain the graffiti

    Been here many times...Great old hospital. Too bad it's being demolished soon. A group of people went a couple months back and got arrested for trespassing, Luckily we never ran into any problems in this place and we seen it from basement to roof. We have some videos from here as well, Cheers brother.

    The slab bath would’ve been where they just tossed a physically disabled person and hosed them down and called it caring for them. Just before that you can see a sticker on the door about saving the hospital for the disabled. There were protests from some of the residents and the families of the disabled people before this place was closed.

    • @Not_a_snake
      @Not_a_snake 3 года назад +5

      But overall institutionalization of the disabled was horrible and the treatment sub par. But these people probably felt like they needed to defend where they lived at the hospital because they had only ever lived there and institutional care was all they knew. And the families didn’t want to take care of the disabled people. Now we do have more community care that enables you to stay in your own home.

    Back in the day when people had tuberculosis they would put them in a huge room together next to the windows because fresh air was recommended. But they probably have those Hospital curtains around the bed for privacy Etc. That's good old footage. You did a good job finding that stuff and incorporating it into your video. Why are you wearing a mask outside most pathogens cannot live outside in the fresh air. So many people are unaware of this. This is one reason why many TB patients were put outside.

    I baby sat for two children of one of my husbands cousins while her and her husband worked in a factory. At 6 AM everyday they both left for work. She with her leg braces on. I had always admired her for her strength and perseverance. I would go ahead and clean their house and do the dishes for them. Children were 2 and 4. Wonderful family. She was such a loving person with a smile always on her face! 💕

    That "Castle Sterox-O-Matic" at 12:52 was from the late 50s, or early 60s. Patent was applied for in 1957, and issued in 1958. In addition I found an advertisement online for that device dated 1963. Very cool that it's still there.

When I was a bit younger, my friends and I used to go to a hospital somewhat similar to this called Paul Dever (I think it was called) in Taunton, MA. Unfortunately, they tore it down a few years ago and I think have recently built something in its place. Super cool to see other people exploring MA areas. Are you from Massachusetts?

    Great exploration, I like it a lot. I'm impressed with this montage - that love of detail, real meticulousness, reliability - super stuff. Sensational to watch (the editing is first class as usual). Adding additional information in the form of borrowed material is a great way to bring the history of the place closer. It is a pity that it does not age naturally. The vandalism of the first building makes you lose faith in humanity. What is the current history of this building - are these workers renovating it or are they demolishing it? I hope it is the former - the complex is magnificent.

    Oh my days….that stainless steel tank!! I was involved in an accident on the beach in Long Beach, WA that saw me trapped by my right leg getting caught under a huge drift log in the surf. I ended up in hospital for 6 months…..they would take me down to the hydro room, dose me with extra morphine, Place me in the tank and literally scrape the ocean-gunk (technical term) from the inside of my leg, around the muscles, from ankle to upper thigh! As soon as I saw that tank, I admit my stomach literally clenched! (insert scream here). What a deja vu!
