I listened to a podcast the other day with a Plum Village Monk & he mentioned that Thich Nhat Hanh had said that actually he didn't recommend sitting with overwhelming feelings but instead to go for a walk or do something else...and that sitting with overwhelm risks reinforcing the unhelpful stories or generating more of them (referred to as the second arrow). It was the first time I can recall hearing this acknowledged. I will find the name of the podcast episode if you are interested. Also very much relate to the compulsive distraction & mental running away at the moment. Starting with re-establishing a morning routine is a good idea - I would like to do the same. Wonderful singing
I‘m very interested! And it reaffirms my intuition. Taking action like a walk is definitely is good when feelings/thoughts are too overwhelming. And then there are things like somatic experiencing and trauma informed healing methods that can really make a difference (when we’ve gone through trauma). I just feel this topic is often overlooked and downplayed in the spiritual scene, and in my opinion can actually be quite dangerous to think that meditation mindfulness of the cure for everything. For me they are fundamental for my healing process, but certain things just need additional approaches imo.
@EmbraceYourselfBaby the podcast is called "the way out is in" and the episode is number 73 being with difficult feelings Completely agree with your thoughts on the limitations and risks of mindfulness, especially with trauma and certain mental health diagnoses. So much of what you have said resonated, as you know Nastja, I am a great advocate of meditation & mindfulness. I find this easy to do when my life is great, but definately not easy to do when my thoughts are all over the place and I have no space to put them to one side or in a box to thus enable me to practice those things that I know will ultimately help me. It's something I struggle with most days if I'm honest. I think the change to your morning routine is a positive one. I used to turn on TV when I woke, I no longer do this. The news always breaks my heart and sets the tone for my day if I do that. Acknowledging your thoughts can be a good thing, sitting with them and imagine them floating by, off to some other realm where they won't bother you. I dunno, I do try and always remind my self 'This too shall pass'. Healing is a deeply painful process, it leaves us vulnerable but ultimately, we do gain strength from it. It may not seem it at the time, but we do. Thank you for just being 'you'. I helps others like me just to be 'me'. ❤🙏. P.S. Love to hear you sing and play guitar so wondefully.
