Oh yes, the Compaq Quickrestores. Those finicky things. I was a computer repair tech in the late 90's and the place I worked for was an authorized Compaq repair center. At times those restores could be a nightmare and didn't work. When that happened we had to do some mix and matching between the boot floppy and different restore CDs until it finally decided that yeah, this was the right combo. There was even times where we had to alter the boot floppy manually to make the restore work. This typically happened after we had to replace a broken piece of hardware in the machine with something new. Other manufacturers had their own restore combos as well with similar issues. It wasn't a fun thing to have to do let me tell ya.

That is actually a very innovative solution to the CRT sync problem. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it ;-)

One interesting thing about (some?) Compaq PCs of that vintage, is the special partition they had on the HD, for the computer's confuguration.

Wow you was really determined to get all that bloatware, cool work you did about decoding the serial and thanks for sharing everything.
Hope you restore it to how you remember it!
I got s Pentium 60 just before Windows 95 launch and I remember these Compaq Presarios AIO with 486 DX2-66 where all around with TV Tuners and all the multimedia buzzwords, I remember that by that time they offered free upgrades to Windows 95 as the launch was imminent, my system came with 3.1 and a software to build the diskettes, but that program didn't had a backup for the drivers, just some floppies on the box 😅

Good work on the display refresh rate/filming solution. I find it an absolute pain on compact Macs due to the weird rate they use.

Our first Windows computer was a Compaq Presario CDS510. I have tried to run a Compaq Restore Disk for the CDS510 on a Windows virtual machine in hopes of getting it to install. But no luck. The original Compaq Media Pilot was cool with how it looked like a real stereo system.

I remember the quick restore cd's. Customers would bring their dorked up PC to CompUSA or Circuit City when I was in retail and I had a pocketful of restore CDs to reinstall Windows if they had srewed Windows up more than I could fix in an hour. Bred a lot of goodwill by "fixing" their issues. In the corporate world, b efore networking progressed past 10 half, we would get the drivers off that disk, and then make a slipstream disk to install vanilla windows with customizations to boot new PCs from. Then they would auto install everything and join the domain. It's amazing how fast the machines were after removing all of the crap and tuning Windows.

Nice. I remember messing around a lot with nlite, slipstreaming XP for my own machine and seeing how small I could get it down with breaking something. Don't remember the exact figures but I got it down to a pretty small size, and it was fast! But also broke a lot of things along the way to get to that point. Thank god for CD-RWs

My first computer capable of running dos or win 3.1 was a presario cds 866. I still have its rough shape corpse. But have a great presario 833 that runs fine. And there is like nothing for the 800 line.. 500s 900s 700s all day long, but no restore for 800s. Still looking for the 197005 cache module...
Thank you so much for this video. I know something out of it will help.

Ironically, I remember at the time (pre-readily available Internet drivers) spending many hours readying a very similar system to *not* have all the manufacturer's garbage on the machine.

    Simpsons clown college. 🤣
I was hanging out at a computer shop back in the late 90s building PCs (they couldn't afford to officially hire me but I learnt a lot). We just used 00100-OEM-0123456-00100 for Windows 95 installs. Yeah they were a bit shonky. Still have it memorised 25+ years later 😳

I have a Compaq Armada 7770DMT. If it weren’t for the Clonezilla image of that laptop on ArchiveOrg, I’d be shafted! I would’ve had to do a hack along with what you did!! I’m done with it lol!

On that, there’s some magic going on with a RomDrive (different for each), renaming of files, and a bunch of .bat addressed DBs.
Else, in theory, you could add your (current) serial number to whatever computer, especially considering the software is THE SAME, you can add the Serial like you did!

Hello, great content and the serial number, instead of model number, for a restore disc, that's some serious company bs! They could have skipped that video to fit more drivers for me models! BUT you got too many ads. Please lower the frequency it's maddening. 2 ads every 5 minutes is NOT acceptable. I'm so happy you removed the Compaq music to avoid demonetisation 😂
I'm 20 minutes into your upload and can't take anymore ads. Big 👎
