My father. God rest him.. was an anti aircraft gunner on HMS Birmingham and was on the Murmansk convoy runs.. He hated the Russians from the moment his ship docked. They were kept on board ship by armed Russian troops so they could not see or tell anyone ashore what was going on. He used to say we never should have given aid to them as they were and still are deluded ungrateful psychopaths.

Most of the millions lost by Russia during WW2 were killed by Russian forces (razing everything in their way). The rest were killed on Stalin’s orders (eg Kahovka Dam and many others being blown up). Not to mention Polish and German civilians they brutalised just as they have in Ukraine.

The price of supplying the Soviets in WW2 wasn’t just the equipment and supplies. Thousands of allied merchant marine sailors died in the icy North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. All the supplies to the Soviets had to go by ship convoy to Murmansk and most were attacked by German aircraft and submarines based in Norway.

When Germany invaded the USSR Stalin actually gave up, it took Rokossovskiy and Zhukov 2 weeks to find him and convince him to come back. Stalin had retreated to his dacha with booze and women, he had all but completely given up. That's how close the USSR was to collapse.

Your description is not entirely correct. You describe it as if Stalin didn't care and was just celebrating. And he did not "disappear" for 2 weeks as you make it seem, but was completely disillusioned for 1 week. This is because he had so much confidence that Hitler would honor the agreement they had. It wasn't the two generals who "found" him as you say, it was the Politburo who expressed confidence in him, after which he took control again.

A lot of that lend least was transported from British ports at great cost to the Merchant and Royal Navy. I had the privilege of talking to a gentleman who ‘as a young man ,had been in one of these crews . They faced U-Boats, Luftwaffe and The Arctic weather -when they reached the Russian Port they were not allowed to leave the ship-only the stretcher cases were allowed to be dis-embarked to hospital- a commissar was stationed at the bottom of the gangway to stop any sailor trying to leave they were so desperate to avoid any ‘mixing. Some time back there was a story that several Hurricanes had been dug up -they were in good condition and the only explanation anyone came up with was that in order to avoid having to pay American back Stalin ordered them to be buried so they could not be traced.

As a German, our weak leader, Scholz, is embarassing. It's not just, how scared he is, but also, that he isn't honest. He always makes up reasons f.e. for not giving Taurus, that there are problems with production and so on, then the company comes forward and says, it's a lie, and he does it all the time.
Not just a coward, also a liar, and I wish, we would have a stronger leader, who acts more like Poland or the baltic states, or, at least, would do, what France promises to Ukraine.
It's sad, what a man our leader is, but I clearly am not to harsh, not to unfair, because it sadly is a given fact, he is a liar. Good, that we gave Patriot, good, that we give some HIMARS, but it's not because of Scholz, it's despite him, because he blocks a lot of help all the time, and it's annoying and just a shame for our country.

One thing, Yes, the supplied significant materials to Russia and the US certainly provided very significant men and materials to the war in Europe. However, Canada contributed far more than 10% of the US effort. Canada had a population less than 10% of the US, yet Canada sent almost as many troops as the US, and if you include Canadians serving in the US forces and British forces, the total number of Canadians in Europe was certainly as much as US troops if not more.
Canada also produced many tanks, including Shermans, as well as parts for almost all US tank production. Canada also produced millions of trucks, including the ubiquitous GMCs. Never mind munitions, rations, uniforms, rifles, machine guns, anti-tank rifles, sub machine guns, handguns, artillery, self propelled artillery, ships of all sorts including landing craft, aircraft (Mosquitoes just to name one)
In the end, Canada provided pretty much half of all materials used by all allied forces in Europe.
The US did not win the second world war by themselves, it was a group effort of many nations combining their efforts to supply and equip allied forces. Without all of them together, especially Canada and the US the war would not have been won.
Yes, the US joining the war in Europe was absolutely necessary for Victory, but without the full support of Canada and other countries the US alone could not have won. There is no question that the US did not singlehandedly win WW2.

    • @daniellarson3068

Very good information. Despite all the stuff the US sent, it was the USSR that gave millions of lives. It was the Soviet people despite their government that beat back the Nazis.
A lot of us in the US sort of ignore Canada despite it just being a short drive away. One would think there would be more US media coverage of Canada.

Its brightest fled, many of those who remained were conscripted and squandered as cannon fodder instead of supporting research and development. The armed forces have been revealed to be a Potemkin force - fine facade and little substance. No-one wanted to invade Ruzzia since Hitler - who wants to borrow trouble. But China and others on its southern borders must be wondering what they can pick off now the giant is so weakened. They can't cancel the parade, that would have horrible optics.
They can't fill the parade with an impressive array of vehicles because they've sent them/their operators/maintenance crews to the (officially not a)war in Ukraine. This also looks bad.
Theoretically they could save face saying "well our best parade units are off fighting", but that also looks bad, because officially it isn't even a "war", and is against a numerically inferior force where if the Russian military was as powerful as they say they are, they should have a few tanks and crews to spare for a few days to participate in thus parade... so they can't even try to use that excuse either...

Don't forget the 8 million pair of boots. Without the explosives that were sent early in war, the soviet factories wouldn't have produced 40% of their armaments. Oh yeah also the radio sets made a big difference. The figure that blows me away is the US supplied enough boots for 60% of all red soldiers. Also the hides that were sent so the soviets could make their own footwear.
