Helped me a ton. I bought the 1224 and saw your video in time to cancel my order and get the 1234. I have the exact same faucet, thanks for saving me the mistake
Wow! I have been looking for this video for a year now since i forgot the model name of my Moen faucets. Will go buying it after work today. Thank you so much
TJF 10/29/19 I wanted to sign on and thank the author of this video. When I called Moen for their customer service they were out to lunch. Here is the other thing of all the videos on the Moen site the 1234 cartridge was not so I went to You Tube dialed it in and the first video up was a winner for me. Thank you C. Miles
Great video. Thanks for showing the steps in replacing the Moen cartridge. My situation with the bathroom faucet wound up being a tight faucet handle from build-up, although I was prepared to replace the cartridge using your video as reference. For those who aren’t sure if it’s the cartridge or the handle, I think if you have trouble removing the handle and base, then the issue could be with the handle and might not be the cartridge. A larger pipe wrench, Phillips screwdriver, and CLR we’re all I needed to fix my issue. You need the pipe wrench to generate enough torque to turn the base; smaller wrench didn’t work but the larger one did the trick. The screwdriver was to loosen the screw that attaches the handle to the base (was very tight for some reason). CLR got rid of the lime and other gunk that made the handle so difficult to turn.
Great video. One suggestion is to make sure the stopper in the sink is closed before you start working around the sink. If you don't, you're guaranteed to drop a screw or smth into the sink and it winds up in the drain/p-trap.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to show how to remove and replace the Moen 1234 Cartridges. I could not find instructions on Moens site. I gave it a thumbs up.
Super helpful, thanks, my little retainer is stripped out and won’t come out, but I get how this is all put together in order to pull it out, thanks for the video!
Thank you for this tip brother! I've been scratching my head for 20 minutes!!! Very annoying because I don't normally carry needle nose with me. I might have to start now
After I replaced the cartridge and let the water run to screw on the handle , the water doesn’t shut off (unless of course I shut off the water from the bottom). After putting the handle the water stays on so I thought maybe I didn’t push the cartridge in deep enough. The handle turns the cartridge like it’s supposed to. Do you think I’m not seating my cartridge deep enough ? When I remove the cartridge, the bottom of the cartridge separates from the cartridge as well and I have to use a new replacement. Any suggestions
Thanks so much! I bought the 1224 cartridge because I thought (according to the Moen page) that's what my faucet required but in fact it needs the 1234 cartridge. Ugh!
Any way you could tell me the part numbers on said red and blue extensions? For the life of me I cannot find them. I can find the full spline but not the partial spline like in this video.
Search for the installation instructions using your model number, might be able to see how was installed so you can uninstall it. Check for any small screws that could be unique to your model. If exact model as one in the video, increase your leverage with some channel lock pliers being careful not to scratch the surface. Mine rotates counterclockwise for removal. Good luck!
My cold water 1234 cartridge is stuck in the pipe and is not coming out by grasping the metal stem with needle nose pliers. I'm thinking that I'll have to have to make a tool that will slip into the "slotted" area on the stem then yank it out or use some kind of sliding hammer or make a tool that uses a threaded bolt and nut as a "puller" to pull the stem (and the rest of the cartridge) up and out. Any comments on this"
As long as you've removed the nut that holds the cartridge in the pipe (and your water line is shut-off) that may be the best solution. Sounds like yours is in there good -- also try twisting it clockwise/counter-clockwise using the stem of the cartridge to try to break loose the build-up that is holding it in place.
If you have the Brantsford 8 “ widespread Faucet that uses the 1224 cartridge, you have to remove the “ cartridge retainer bushing “ first. The cartridge WILL NOT come out unless you unthread the grey plastic bushing first. It has ears that engage the tool that the poster showed in the video. Mine was staked in so hard the ears snapped off. I had to drill the sides with a small bit to relieve the stress. It is a royal pita. I had to order the new bushing(s) in a kit with other parts for an additional $16. I hope the inside threads ( very fine) are not too damaged to reset the new bushings. It is definitely a struggle.
You all are forgetting the best feature of Moen. They are guaranteed for life. They send you the necessary parts for free, and in a timely manner And, if necessary they replace the entire faucet. aucet
ONLY PLACE I FOUND TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1224 AND 1234** - NO VISIBLE SCREW INSIDE THE BLUE/RED STEM EXTENSIONS WITH THE 1234 CARTRIDGE: JUST A PLASTIC BAR - SHOULD HIGHLIGHT IN THE DESCRIPTION
Suggest pulling it out, check for Phillips screw first, and then compare the cartridge, looking for name or take with you down to hardware store. If 1234 and no plastic nut, guessing it might have been installed incorrectly which might be cause for your leaking.
Put clear GE silicone around the handle escutcheon bells. Complete around the entire base of handle before you thread it back onto valve body. It will preserve the valve mounting hardware and keep and water seepage out. wipe up excess w paper towel
give it a few wiggles (sure you have already) - make sure a good grip with pillars (vise grip work well too); tough to break that part but does need to come out if you want to finish the job. Good luck!
I sprayed white vinegar into first the nut and then the cartridge and let it sit for over an hour. Then I used the pliers sideways to pull the cartridge out, using the base of the faucet for leverage.
Rough spot to be in, try the needles nose like the video - placing pressure on the inside of the collar, wherever you can find traction. Separately, as mentioned below, try to drill a whole through the tube tool to slip a screwdriver through to get more leverage on the counterclockwise twist.
If unable to turn to the left by hand, large channel locks should allow you to get leverage to break it loose. Make sure to wrap the ends of the pliers in electrical tape or somehow protect the finish of the handles/cartridge covers (wrap those in thick cloth). Don't want mess up their looks!
Hello, thanks for the video! I've tried to unscrew both sides of the faucet as seen in step one of your video, but mine is pretty tight. I'm thinking of using a wrench but afraid the wrench would damage the nickle finish. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Yeah, be careful, won't take much to goober those up. Could try a pair of channel lock pliars, wrapping the vice in multiple layers of electrical tape - so nice and smooth and grab just bellow the handle. That should break it loose enough to work it back to hand tighten levels.
Couldn't have done this without your help! Husband is out of town, and under quarantine theres nothing else to do! Couldn't get the help I needed from their website so THANK YOU 😁
Usually you can place a channel lock wrench around that metal Moen tool and rotate the tool to loosen that plastic fastener nut. Not a useless tool, you just need to know how to use it. Doesn’t need much pressure to loosen, and be sure not to squeeze the channel lock wrench too tight that you collapse the metal tool tube.
Our handle broke but won’t budge when we return to rotate it off. How the heck are you supposed to take them off in the first place? He spins his off so easy.
The handle shouldn't really move, but the base (portion that touches the counter top) will. Might need to use some pliers (channel locks) with something to keep it from scratching to give it some help. You got this!
We just had this exact problem. Moen warrantied the parts, but not the tool to fix it with. Had to pay $4.00 for the tool...Not horrible, but they should make a cartridge that is removable.
hey 4 bucks not bad! I didn't know about the warranty when I shot the video - tool a piece of junk; just used the needle nose. Either way, glad you got it all fixed up!

The hardest part about this project is getting the nut out. You did not show what you were doing with the needle nose to do that. I'm likely the dummy, but hard to figure it out.
Sorry about that Steve - sounds like you got there eventually, but for others - if you look at the "tool" used, you can see it has 2 teeth. Basically, the ends of the needle nose pliers act as these "teeth", but give you more twisting leverage. Instead of squeezing the pliers closed, I'm pulling them and sitting the tips of the pliers into the grooves. Once they catch, you can twist it loose. @4:21 (pause it there) you can see where you are trying to seat the pliers and turn it left to loosen it (it is just screwed in).

My new faucet from factory came with missing rubber ring on the bottom of cartridge and water was flowing through nonstop. Thank you for the video!
If not for your video it would have taken me an extra hour figuring out what I needed to do. Thank you !
How do I remove that C Clamp just around the valve body? your video at 1:40 shows it, mine points toward the mirror - thanks
Thanks for the video. The rest of the DIY world seems be stuck on the 1224. Thanks again.
Thank you, I had no clue how to get through "cartidge extenders".

2:22 Tip: Use vise grips on the Moen tool, or drill a hole thru it at the top so you can insert a screwdriver into it to gain leverage.

Try a "needle nose" vice grip pliars - it works really well. But make sure to adjust so they are just snug...not overly tight.

Im having the same issue. The cartridge just will not come out.
Great video! My cartridges were stubborn though!
Can you do this with the water on?
Could you have gotten the cartridge out if you didn't have the Moen 14272 removal tool?
YES; I ended up not using the tool really at all - just the needle nose pillars
Will replacing the cartridges also improve water flow?
Thanks for the nice detailed video!😊👍

How much pressure should I apply when pulling out because it is really hard to pull the blue thing out. Do not want to break anything
