Very timely for me Craig. I'm booked for a visit on the 9th. I am most definitely not looking forward to getting up or down those steps from the boat! Looks like you had ideal weather conditions. All the best Rob.
Cheer’s Rob it was my first time back out since covid. It was okay weather wise a bit windy and the sun was out now and again but it was better when it wasn’t much easier to expose the Puffins properly. The steps and the climb up the hill does get the old heart working and the old knees but once you see the Puffins you will forget about the pain 👍
Good timing for me as well as i'm there in a week. Like your in flight shots. People say the Wick is the best place for them flying , what do you think is it worth heading there first? Cheers
The Wick is a good place but it does get really busy. If there are Puffins at North Haven it’s a great place as you have the sea as a backdrop much easier to set exposure and l find it easier to track them as they come in.
Thanks for all the advice. Made it onto the island in the most awful weather so not much photo opportunity however the weather broke for a short while and got some cracking BIF shots In the end
@@maxspringer7247 Glad you managed to get over to the island shame the weather wasn`t playing ball but good to hear it cleared up enough to get some shots you are happy with. Just happy to help :) Craig
Thank You 🙏 l took my 100-400 on my full frame plenty reach as Puffins are by your feet in some places. If you are going to try for the Short eared Owls you might want more reach but for Puffins you would get away with 300mm. I found most Puffins by North Haven at the top of the steps but different days may be different but still plenty at the Wick and other locations along the way. Hopefully you will have a great day overcast or cloudy is preferable as easier to expose the Puffins but you will enjoy the day regardless 👍😬
@@craignicoll001 Thanks Craig have a 100-400 and 200-600 so will probably take the latter as I would like tot try the Shorties , where do they hang out ?
@@scdawes Normally in the valley past the farm but on the day they will tell you where all the latest sightings are and if any rarities have been spotted. Your lens choice will be ideal nice to have the extra reach just in case 👍😬
WOW! This must be fate, im off over there on the 16th of this month! Your video was the first to come up, great video! Cant wait now! Im thinking of taking a 16-35,70-200 + a 500 ,what do you think? Thanks for any info, would be much appreciated.. Cheers Dave
If for a day trip that is a lot of gear to carry :) If its a 500mm prime its a bit much as a lot of the time the Puffins can be pretty close to your feet but if you are also hoping for the Short Eared Owls then may be worth taking. Out of those lenses I would be taking the 70-200 and if on a cropped body it would be fine or with an extender for a full frame. Cheers for looking and I hope you have a great day I am sure you will :)
Love the video Brought back memories from my visit in the late 80s
