    • @ClockworkCrow7

      The problem is the required energy to chill and compress the nitrogen into its liquid form & keeping it at that temperature constantly, and what engines are there to control the release of the fuel? And how would the powers that be implement safety measures? The general population isn't nearly as science & safety minded as many wish they were.

    Ok, so what RPM did you get with the liquid nitrogen? Also, it would be great to see the slo-mo for that breakage.

  • @jevinliu4658
    @jevinliu4658 3 года назад +6

    I never imagined that nitrogen, one of the most inert elements on the periodic table, can be fuel.

    • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz 3 года назад +3

      It's not -- it's being used as reaction mass.
      And nitrogen gas (stable 2-atom molecules) are very stable, which is why *other* forms make good explosives -- it wants to get to that stable state. Remember the Beirut harbor explosion? That was nitrogen.

    • @jevinliu4658
      @jevinliu4658 3 года назад +1

      @@JohnDlugosz Oh, thanks for the clarification. I didn't even know that had a specific term like that.
      Also, how did I forget about that explosion? IDK.

    • @dinkledankle
      @dinkledankle 3 года назад

      @@JohnDlugosz Technically, yes it's 'reaction mass', but colloquially it can be fuel, as 'fuel' can also mean 'to sustain', or be a thing that sustains. I'd say the nitrogen is sustaining the rotation of the device.

      @@jevinliu4658 One of the most common, low-complexity, low-cost, low-impulse thrusters used in space, mostly for minor maneuvering, is the simple cold gas thruster, typically with nitrogen. You just open the valve and the high pressure gas escapes out a nozzle, giving decent thrust. The thrust to weight is pretty low, as I understand it, but it's so reliable, that it has great use over long-duration missions.
