CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jem (Phillip Alford) is terrified when Bob Ewell (James Anderson) sneaks up to their car while Atticus (Gregory Peck) speaks with Tom's family inside.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the producer/director team of Robert Mulligan and Alan J. Pakula. Set a small Alabama town in the 1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham). While Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, there are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before and after the court date: Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem (Philip Alford), her friendship with precocious young Dill Harris (a character based on Lee's childhood chum Truman Capote and played by John Megna), her father's no-nonsense reactions to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive "village idiot" who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction.

TM & © Universal (1962)

A darker part about this scene that's only implied; if it's suggested that Bob Ewell abuses his own daughter, sexually, what do you think he could have done to Scout if he could reach her? Makes it more disturbing to think about.
I don’t think there’s specific evidence of Bob sexually assaulting his daughter ..
u right u right
The book says he just beat her not sexually assaulted her
I actually thought that Bob did do that.
You guys remember when Robinson was recalling what happened during the trial and he claimed that Mayella Ewell said that she had never made love to a man before, and what her father did to her didn't count?
Atticus is the biggest bad ass ever.
Period
Bob Ewell is pretty cool too. He told Atticus' chidren to love people of other races
@@MelancoliaI Best thing Bob Ewell did was "fall on his knife". "Introducing Robert Duvall" broke into films making sure of it.
"There's a lot of ugly things in this world son. I wish I could keep them all away from you. That's never possible."
A piece of wisdom every father can use for their child.
I just want to ask what is your profile picture called I swear it was a childhood cartoon of mine
@@thfvhhojv76 The show you are referring to is called "Pinky and Brain" hope that helps 😉
@SERENA SPENCER how old were you when you watched it
Great book, great film. Gregory Peck was a fantastic actor. His voice exudes integrity and dignity. This movie had a wonderful cast. It just seems like Gregory Peck belongs on Mount Rushmore. He seemed bigger than life, yet appearing common at the same time.
Kiss ass
The Mighty Quinn
tangiers59 you still do make a strong point though
Quinn Foster I think so.
1:48 that scene should be renamed: "Bob Ewell does the nae nae".
HAHA!
lmao
💀💀💀💀💀💀
😂
If an actor, That portrays a villain, makes you hate the actor himself, He did a great job.
Bob Ewell does the nae nae when they drive off
I'm weak!! XD
Omg 😂😂😂😂
Lol I thought I was the only one that noticed that
Just noticed that now
I used that joke in my English class when we watched the film, and everyone loved it.
Worst nae nae to date
Zach Ryan best*
Zach Ryan he did it better drunk than others have done sober
Someone give Bob Ewell's actor an oscar
Gregory Peck is fantastic in this role.
Try again. Helen is Tom Robinson's wife. But what really frosts me here is that this utube snippet *cut* one of the most powerful scenes ever on film. The Ewell character unloads a huge gaboon of spit on Atticus's face in his drunken stagger. Atticus quietly takes a handkerchief out of his coat pocket and wipes some of it off his face while staring back at Ewell. Atticus says nothing back to Ewell. This is a huge statement of the stupidity of macho male response. Ewell cannot deal with this. This is DIGNITY photographed & filmed. And this youtube snippet CUTS that part out. :(
but there is a part or 2 just before and during this which is very subtle so subtle you almost don't notice it that truly shows you exactly the type of person Atticus is and the type if person Jeb will become....
when Atticus goes to see the Robinson family he shakes Tom's father's hand knocks before he enters the house and takes his hat off to Tom wife...what southerner at the time would show that respect to an American American family?
when Ewell comes to the car Jeb ASKS the little boy to go get his father...he even says please...right there you see shades of Addicus in Jeb
+Nate Smith thats a different scene noob. learn stuff
i saw this in the 60's and 3 or 4 times after. I was just drunk when I made that comment.
Nate Smith I
Nate Smith awesome analysis!!!!!!!!!
I was just about the same age as Scout the first time I saw this movie. I remember when we got home my Dad gave me a little wooden box with a separate top for me to put my collected trinkets in like Scout did in this movie. I still have the box and thank God I still have my father and mother too.
God bless you and Israel.
Sadly to say both of my parents have passed.
@AmericanIsraeliJew I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're doing well yourself, though.
I'm OK thanks for the asking. @@tedbox6299
😂 I watched this in English class today and I couldn't stop laughing he was doing a drunken whip
Destiny Griffin me too
I watched this in English class too.
Watched this In English class on Friday
Me too, me and one other guy only ones who thought it was funny
I just watched it today too
Jem is just so perfect! He's my favorite character and I'm so glad they portrayed him correctly in the movie. :)
Scout's really cute too.
I bet he was really upset in the morning when he learned he missed his chance to meet boo radley because he was unconscious.
Jem is My favorite too! He's so protective of Scout in the book and even cuter than I imagined Him to look in the movie❤️❤️❤️
This is one of my all time favorite movies and book!! Never gets old!!
The shoulder touch gets me every time
scout and jem are so lovely !! best book I ever read!! atticus atticus !!

@@burritonick9369 he's alive but like 70 years old last I checked
Imagine watching this scene back in '62. Damn that Bob Ewell, so creepy!
"Don't be scared of him, son. He's all bluff!"
Atticus sure underestimated evil. If it wasn’t for boo radley Atticus would have to bury both his kids. I’m also sure at the trial bob ewell would go into graphic detail about how he killed them just to cause Atticus even more anguish.
@@leerogish7223 no, he would have pinned it on Boo Radley, and never seen Justice. that's why it's such a relief that Boo killed him first before he had a chance to kill the kids
@@katieoreilly3478 No they wouldnt. Everyone in the town knew he had it out for Atticus and the only reason the jury sided with him and mayella was racism. Bob would be the prime suspect. Also it’s not like bob showers or changed his clothes so he’s going to be covered in the kids blood so your telling me as soon as heck questioned bob with the kids blood all over his clothes he’s going to actually believe him when he says it’s boo radley lol
now watch me whip now watch me 1:44
" Keep windows closed and the doors locked ".
Good advice a hundred years ago. Even now.
Atticus was WRONG when he said Ewell was all bluff. :(
Next to Atticus, he is pathetic and "all bluff," but to Jem and Scout, he looks demonic and ghoulish and he proves to be such a monster later on.
Dwell was a bully and a coward. He’d never dare grade blows with Atticus, a grown man and the best shot in maycomb county. Bit a pair of helpless children he’d intimidate and attack.
Ewell is a bully who only picks on the helpless. His own kids especially mayella, Tom robinson’s wife and scout and jem. Not only was he afraid of Atticus but link deas as well. Such behavior rubbed off on Bobs son Burris as well when another male student stepped up to defend the teacher Burris seemed very intimidated by him. Now if Burris is afraid of a much smaller and younger peer imagine the horror in that poor boys eyes when his father goes off on him and his siblings!
damn, atticus just fuckin stands there saying nothing and has more dignity/power than anybody.
He knows ewell is a coward.
Just figured out this is foreshadowing Bob Ewell attacking Scout and Jem at the end
1:48 bro does an emote
Jem and Scout are sooo adorable! I lovee this book! I love my english teacher for making us read this!
Am I the only one who thinks Bob Ewell looks like crazy Ralph from Friday the 13th?
No
What happened to the whole Bob spitting in Atticus' face scene? I mean, I know I not all movies follow the book exactly, but...
It comes later in the movie when Atticus tells Helen about Tom.
Wasn't that only what Scout *heard* from (if I recall) Miss Stephanie or Miss Maudie? I know she heard it- she didn't witness it.
@@unpain0334 They changed it to Jem witnessing it in the movie after Tom is dead and Atticus goes over to Helen's house to tell her.
I love this movie. Atticus is one of the best Dads in movie history.
I absolutely love Atticus
Same
I jus lov Scout and Atticus!!
He is such a good daddy
The exact opposite of Bob. The novel goes into way more detail than the film about what a worthless father and provider he is. His kids have to search the dump for food because he spends all their welfare money on alcohol.
I f*cking loveeee that insult😂😂😂😂 you love people a little different from you! Like ouch man that hurts so bad. How small minded.
Its 2014 and bob Ewell does the nae nae wierd
its 2019 and i replied to your comment
1928 Dodge Victory six 4 door sedan.
Yep, Bob Ewell was all bluff. Until he wasn't anymore.
James Anderson seemed not to be an easy actor to deal with. This actually worked to film‘s advantage however uncomfortable he made his other colleagues feel. I have yet to see a more evil representation of racism on film.
oh what a coincidence! my english teacher made us read this too! i absolutely looooooved the book! an i agree; scout and jem are cute. and I like the name dill too. for some reason, it's just so funny :)
MR. Krabs, Patrick said SOME things!!! 1:07
Brilliant adaptation to an amazing novel!
Scout wasn't there when Atticus visits Helen there were only jem and dill. As my memory serves right
Atticus reminds me of Clark Kent.
Must be the hat, suit, and glasses...
That would SCARE THE DAYLIGHTS out of me!!!!
Atticus wasn’t scared. He knew bob was too cowardly to actually fight him and was too innocent to suspect he was actually planning to kill his kids.
I hate Bob Ewell!!!!!
I like to think everyone does
That would scare the DAYLIGHTS out of me.
bits and pieces of the truth scattered about the scene
I recently re-read the novel and hated Bob Ewell more than ever.
Not one redeeming quality. At best you can argue he never had a chance at life since as Atticus said the ewells have been the same for 3 generations which meant him, his parents, kids and any siblings he had were the same dispicable uncooth freeloaders he was.
Jem is so cute XD Love this film and book :)
Best quote of all time
I seriously love Jem. I'd seriously marry him. Love this scene.
Bob Ewell is my favorite movie character ever because he came with the best line ever said in a movie. 1:06 1:45
I always felt that Gregory Peck would have made a great Bruce Wayne/Batman if they made a live-action batman movie in the 50s/60s.

*_HE DIDN"T HAVE THE N-WORD PASS_*
I'm aghast that I cannot find any of Brock Peters' brilliant "Tom Robinson's" testimony in this RUclips mix, or anywhere yet on RUclips.
Do you mean Jem as a 10 year old boy, or Jem today as a 91 year old man.
Either way is very disturbing
cn u put the WHOLE movie not jus clips or no?? cuz i love dis movie!!!
hi im doing a school project on this clip and ive just realised i dont know the names of the woman and boy who live at the house in this scene. any help please i need it asap!
the world is ugly
i just love your comment and your picture it so matching xD

1:44 BOB EWELL DOES THE NAE NAE 🤑
Has anyone else notice the music played at :5 - :8 secs is very similar to the music used in Jurassic Park? Search Raptor attack soundtrack. In Jurassic Park the music has a more deep bass to it and sometimes played faster.
I wonder if John Williams intentionally used this music. I know he did use a bit of music from Hitchcock's Psycho in Star Wars.
There is a coloured version!!!! That's news to me.
yes jem is sooo cute
I'm playing bob ewell in our school production :)
I have readen the book of To Kill a Mockingbird
This Movie For Sale is a disgrace. How long will they milk this great Movie for Profit?
Bob ewell is very well groomed here compared to his novel counterpart. According to the novel he was so covered in dirt and grime it was hard to tell he was white and not black. In fact scout pointed out his skin looked burned when he washed up for court since his skin wasn’t used to being cleaned.
В русском переводе фильма те слова, которые сказал Юэл, это " негритянский любовник". Но на самом деле, я считаю, правильно перевод в книге, это "чернолюб".
Thank you! :) Sorry for the late reply!
Where to watch this
Ayeeee bob doing the nae nae
Hmmm, I don't remember Jem ever saying "daddy".... Or am I wrong?
Omg yea, ur right
He referred to him as “my daddy” because the boy might not know his name was Atticus

Is this scene in the book? I read it many years ago and I don't remember if it is or not. Is anyway a really sad and deep scene.
No it isn’t
And to think what bob would do to scout and jem if he got into the car
Atticus was a Stoic, in my opinion
Bob Ewell looks like a werewolf.
Im Dill in a play production of this movie!
wow, i missed that part in the book
is helen the woman whos house it is?
Five years late but yep. That's Helen Robinson's home.

Daughter.
@@silverstarlightproductions1292
So, where did all the children come from? Was it implied that she had a lot of illegitimate children, possibly by her father?
@@keithwilson6060 Actually, people tended to have larger families back then. People also married and had kids earlier than they usually do now. So having older children and a bunch of small children wouldn't have been unusual.
Imo one of the most hateable movie characters in history
