  • In the 1992 NFL season, Dolphins running back Mark Higgs was playing some of the best football of his career, and was showing no signs of slowing down as he helped guide the Dolphins to an AFC East crown. That all changed when a case of mistaken identity completely rocked his world, as through no fault of his own, it marked the exact moment when everything went south

      "Running Back's career cut short by knee injury" obviously doesn't have the same clickbait potential.
      That said, still was an interesting story about a relatively forgotten player. On a lot of his videos I enjoy the "first let's get some context" sections more than whatever the video is supposed to be covering.

      He wouldn’t have injured his knee if he didn’t have his identity stolen, which he wouldn’t have been jailed for if he wasn’t speeding. So, speed kills careers.

He worked hard for every ounce of success he achieved in pro football -- and deserved more! He's the type of man you'd root for. About 15 years after his career ended, he spotted me in Miami (while he was doing his gig as RB coach at Miami Central) and recognized me, and greeted me so kindly, asking about my life and so forth. I'm sure those Dolphins linemen blocked extra hard for him. He's one of those kinds of people.

    it seems like mostly just a coincidence, and I am looking at the plays, it looked like the Pats were just playing really good run defense, you can't put it all on Higgs and his possible "mental state", it's just bad luck. Pats were banking on good run defense and he got injured trying to push through it, it happens, it might have happened anyway even if he hadn't had identity theft happen.

  • @johncate9541

    It was coincidence, nothing more. That knee injury caused Higgs problems for the rest of his career and was the reason he retired at 29.
    He was not a big guy for an NFL running back (5'7", 195), and this was the reason he wasn't chosen until the 8th round. Higgs was hell on wheels when he got the ball at Kentucky, and Kentucky wasn't exactly known for being good in football. He beat the odds and proved himself in the pros, but getting badly hurt was probably inevitable.

  • @gluserty
    @gluserty 2 года назад

    I thought Mark Higgs was a pretty solid runner, and it felt to me at the time that he might pull off a 1,000-yard season in either 1991 or '92, but that didn't quite happen.
    I remember that 19-17 game between the Jets & Dolphins; the Dolphins offense really struggled down the stretch (only 6 TD's in the final 5 1/2 games), and the defense carried them. I still recall Joe Theismann stating, after Tony Martin's 55-yard TD off a screen-legal pick kinda deal in that game, that the TD play would set up the rest of Tony Martin's career (Martin went on to do some very consistently productive things). Completely different than what happened with Higgs.
    What a crummy turn of events for Higgs though; that identity theft situation had to be a distraction for him, even if he initially brushed it off.
    To be fair, most offensive players not named Larry Centers did next-to-nothing for the 1994 and '95 Arizona Cardinals:-).

The Dolphins were to open the 1992 season by hosting New England but Hurricane Andrew one of the rare cat 5 Hurricanes hit South Florida a couple of weeks earlier and they were using Joe Robbie Stadium for a base for recovery aid so both the Dolphins and Pats skipped opening week and played their game later during a scheduled bye week. The Dolphins started the 1992 season in week 2 on MNF at Cleveland vs the Browns in the only Don Shula vs Bill Belichick coaching game with Shula winning 27-23.
