  • During the 19th Century, a strange new pseudoscientific technique became hugely popular.
Based on the theory that the brain was comprised of 'organs' that operated different parts of the mind, phrenologists claimed they could 'read' an individual's personality and intelligence by merely feeling these organs via the normal lumps and bumps on the head.

Nowadays it is easy for us to brand every wrong theory of the past as "weird pseudoscience" or "dangerous nonsense". But at the time almost nothing was known about the brain and every sort of conjecture was a viable option. And it is equally easy to predict that in only a couple of decades we might have to admit that some of the current neuro-scientific theories turned out to be "dangerous nonsense" and "weird pseudoscience" as well. A little bit of intellectual humility could be useful.

In these modern and "improved" days, Satyavan, "intellectual humility" seems a thing in quite short supply.

@@Azrael__ he IS being objective, and therefore is not akin to anyone “trying” to diminish the evils of, say, slavery…he has no intention except to explore the clarification of a perspective from this video he believed to be biased due to a supposed lack of history context being accounted for. I think it could be valuable if you reconsidered your criticism.

I think you aren't familiar with the definition of pseudoscience .Pseudoscience is a statement that is labled as scientific but isn't compatible with scientific method i.e. the statements cannot be tested or experiments cannot be reconstructed or the statement itself lack proper evidence or study. In scientific method we make observations >then hypothesis>carry out experiments to verify hypothesis >if hypothesis passes these experiments it is now a model if it doesn't then it has to be denied or modified >then we search for counterexamples to dissaprove our model >if there are counterexamples we modify our model and return to step 1 if we fail to find counterexamples our confidence in model is increased but we stay ready for anyone to put forward a counterexamples so we can modify our theory. So yes some of the concepts of neurology we have might be wrong or improper that is why we have scientific method to improve our models and reject wrong models.

It's crazy to think 100 years from today, what thoughts or practices will be considered crazy or irrational. Only time and technology will tell

As all sciences it has a beginning, the guys of phrenology did an excellent work for human science.

Nice video. You should also highlight the difference between phrenology and anthropometry (in physical anthropology). A lot of people erroneously imagine phrenology to measure skull shape (think the physical anthropologists with calipers), not the irregularities on the surface. And I mean a lot.

I much like most, simply assume everyone who knows about those things knows the difference.... lol yet now that I think about it im rather curious how many people are trying to educate themselves about anything and ending up lost in the PHRENOLOGY rabbit hole of RUclips 🤔 ....lmao 🤣

This is good, fun, and informative, but when the segment talks about the showmanship of Gall, and notes that they even brought in "monkeys", while showing images of CHIMPS, I lost some respect for the integrity of the information! Come on BBC, you can do better

*"If you are born with larger, more consistent brain matter; lesser deprived of nutrients during pregnancy, you become a fascist faster - if that is your environmental background. There is no mechanism in the human brain which reveals what **_is_** & what is **_not_** relevant. Except Experience"* ~ Jacque Fresco, Reflections on Thought & Uncommon sense
    I highly recommend it!

..hmm... I do believe everything has a bit of truth to it in this world or the next... and thats one im rather curious about... I certainly know a few fascists that I may or may not start poking around and speaking to
..lol will make a very educational experience!! thank you.

the statement implies that eventually everyone becomes a fascist in their own right... and that is rather curious to me as well... I absolutely must investigate now! thank you again... I find my self curiously an eternal student and constantly seeking education in everything yet as of lake i was feeling rather boring and lacking something to peak my interest and motivate me... this seems like the perfect opportunity!!

Also... NOT everything is as it seems... technically this has some validity if you think about it scientifically.... however NOTHING IN LIFE IS 100% the way it seems... and personally with this we have to understand that nature vs nature is valid to every extent... and with any brain human or animal we can adjust things with training and care... so while this has its place in science and medical history it can be a wonderful basis to start from... as long as you remember that caring and hating the person who's brain you are investigating will have its own personal effect... and if you are not educated enough to see what of these facts is valid I suggest you refrain from any communication with anyone/anything with a functioning brain...
