Is Bonville really Australia's Augusta?

  • Sometimes a course gets stuck with a reputation that in many ways undersells the total experience.
Bonville International Golf Resort is often referred to as Australia's Augusta. GolfBarons set out to explore this tag and discovered a whole lot more.

It is a stunning course and I was lucky enough to play there 20 years ago. I have always dreamed about going back. It is a very deceptive course in that the visuals make a shot look easy and close but a good shot only goes half way?! It is simply perfect in every way, unless you want quick and easy golf.

Make it happen, Russell. It's magnificent.

Good to see my home course getting some real attention. Worked and played there as a teenager, the routing is a little different now, and they have cleared out more of the gums in places, but still the same vibe.

We loved it. It's the complete package. The Augusta piece probably undersells it. Can't wait to go back.

It's always nice to have such a beautiful course only a bit over a hour up the road from Port Macquarie.

I’ve played Bonville and Coffs Harbour, I have not played nor been to Augusta. Bonville is expansive, long cart ride between holes etc.
They do one thing very well, the greens are on the slow side, this is better for Amateurs, fast greens we can struggle with. Bonville is good I would definitely play it again! BTW Coffs was good.

Totally over priced and limited access unless you want to pay even more to stay and play. Always rains there when I've played and walking isn't an option.

Isn't staying and playing all part of the experience? It almost feels like it's a must. We're clearly not locals, though. As for the weather, it was perfect for us, although at one stage we did see a cloud which was disappointing.

@GolfBarons I'm in Port, so only an hour away. Last time I played, my wife and I were teamed up with 2 other random guys to make 4, even though there were plenty of spare spots. It rained that hard after 5 holes that the cart broke down. They bought out another cart, but the course became waterlogged, and we abandoned at 9. We didn't even get a free coffee, for the $300 plus I spent.
I also like a nice course you can walk, which isn't an option.

@Willberight2moro , that's a shame. Someone was clearly having a bad day to not look after you. Upside is you have plenty of options up there.

Best value and most fun way to get a game when you're (somewhat) local is one of the many charity days organised by Rotary etc. Get a group of 4 and the price of admission gets some small extras, a chance at prizes and a good time afterwards. 😊

Looks like it’s in a rainforest, carts - long walk green to tee?

    • @GolfBarons

@DPK12 they're called Flooded Gums. Very tall, magnificent trees. And a tough course to walk, as much for undulations as green to tee distances. Magnificent, though.

Stunning course and that is where the compliments end. Over priced and over rated. They only care about those staying on course with fat wallets. They don’t let the vets play at a cheaper rate anymore and don’t play in the local pennants anymore. If you don’t stay on course you have only two days a week to play.
