My grandmother took me to see this movie in the theater. I would have been 14 at the time. I was very into it, but apparently she was not. As I recall there is a pretty long build up after Andromeda is chained to the rock and we are waiting for the Kraken to show up to devour her, and Perseus to try to fight it off. At that point, grandma let out a big yawn and said out loud "this Kraken better get crackin'." I still laugh out loud when I think of it. R.I.P. grandma.
It's a shame there aren't many films based on Greek mythology. This is definitely one of the better ones. Also the 1997 Hallmark Hall of Fame film version of The Odyssey was really good as well.
What are you talking about, the early 2000s had endless movies based on Greek mythology. 300, troy, clash of the Titans remake, the immortals, gladiator, etc.
Yeah the 1997 Odyssey movie is one of the best made for television movies of all time. The acting and music are so beautiful. Armand Assante is beautiful actor much like an older Ciaran Hinds they both command respect on the screen!
I saw this when I was 7 and loved it. Even had a Perseus action figure. Personally I think this is Ray Harryhausen's best film. Vastly superior to the remake.
A timeless clllassic and I saw this when I was 12 years old and loved the story the action and the gorgon Medusa she was scary and one look into her eyes would turn any living creature into stone. I was scared to look at her eyes. Medusa will always scare me! One masterpiece that will never die!

Me too. After watching this I got a Greek Mythology book at the 2nd grade book fair and memorized all the different Gods, Goddesses, Titans, Gorgons, and other assorted mythical creatures. I didn't get to see it in the theater in '81 but I believe it was released onto HBO in '82 where it went into heavy rotation. I must have watched it every time it came on. Even though 2 Star Wars films were already out when this came around, I was still amazed by the Ray Harryhausen stop-motion special effects, dated as they were. I remember the blind witches, the Ferryman on the River Styx, Calibos, and especially Medusa being pretty intense for a 7 year old. It might just be nostalgia kicking in but I still think it's a great film along with pretty much every other Ray Harryhausen flick I grew up watching.
@anzaeria the remake was horrible. The hero in the new version was the usual scowling, mumbling modern type who always looks totally depressed and didn't even love Andromeda.
