1976/1979
The 680 models consisted of a 681 non-calibrated cartridge body with a heavy-duty, more durable stylus assembly. Although the series was targeted to the professional Broadcast/DJ/Studio market where daily use required durable components, the “Broadcast Standard” and “Professional Standard” names were already used for the 600 and 500 models. So, the 680 models were given a non-descript label of “Stereo Standard”.
The last sounds the best. Less surface noise, more clear highs. But, they all sound great.
DURABLE is an apt description of the 680EE Cart.......I have 2 of them which have served me well with my Technics SL1200 Mk 2 Table for over 40 years!
Wow that stanton 680 EES , looks superb with its little brush, and 35 dbs of stereo separation, ive found that through research even more conservatively priced cartridges scored high in stereo separation, what has gone wrong? My favourite carts are from Audio-technica they offer good performance without breaking the bank, i have 4 VM530ENs which are so under rated but perform so well , my current out and out favourite is my VM740ML with its brass coloured body and red stylus, it claims 28dbs of separation, but i would love to fit that 680EES on to my TECHNICS SL 1200G and listen to that 35dbs , that would be something else . I've been using these since 1978 when I got my 681eee. The 680 is pretty close to it as I have many 680 with different styli...the Steriohedron is the best too. The sound stage for the whole series is wonderful. Total shame to Gibson for dumping these after acquiring them.
