There are a lot of poor singers in the spotlight and not just because of Auto-Tune. Many genres have suffered because instrumentation has been stressed over vocals. Modern rappers can't even talk while modern metal singers are sounding like the Cookie Monster.
@@orlock20 Yes great producers understand that vocalists are an instrument to control the harmony & communicate the memorable emotional essence so the listener can FEEL the song. I'm only 7 minutes in, but I love how both ladies were singing the backing vocals for Aretha, almost reverential for her lead. What amazing music to listen to, from a time when more songs were actually crafted and arranged so beautifully. Loving this episode!!
Yes, I agree Ms. Dionne is the greatest and never seem to get mentioned they way she should. Talking about skilled, blessed, unique, and amazing bad ass, hat's Ms. Dionne for sure❤❤!!
This is so good. So often, people have no idea how much practice and attention to detail goes into vocal. Especially this kind of lead and back up. "Erase Me" is one of the smartest pop songs I've ever heard. And "Doomsday" is great too. I can't wait for her next album to come out. As good as Give Me a Minute was, I think this new stuff could be on a completely different level.
Fascinated by what Maiya Sykes had to say about women of color not being allowed to exist in a more vulnerable space. It makes me think of what the Brit singer Yola has spoken about as far as getting trapped in the stereotype/trope of the "strong black woman."
Nina Simone did it, but she did it in Europe. Billie Holiday also pulled it off. In the age of the labels doing less for the artist and independent artists having more influence because of the internet, I believe it's more about being a talented vocalist, writer, instrumentalist and marketer. With those skills, an artist can perform what they want and get noticed.
@@pierreandrewt1347 Yeah, but, ironically, they are clearly two strong grown black women with a wealth of life experience. If they tried to act vulnerable, it wouldn't necessarily be believable. They even talk about this in the episode.
Very interesting. Maybe it's specially true in the USA. Because Jorja Smith has been totally the sweetest, vulnerable brit teen shining stars. Right on Tiny Desk for Example. Or Corinne Bailey Ray. But maybe brits are "allowed" in that space more, in Europe, then USA. Vulnerable black woman would be presenting an artist very honnestly, which the USA barely do for anyone anymore. WHat a great insight from Maiya, appart from a fantastic episode.
It also must be noted that "I Say A Little Prayer" was actually sung by Dionne Warwick and already peaked the charts A YEAR (1967) before Aretha released a version of her own (1968). Moreover, this song was written by the legendary duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David who were notoriously very strict and specific on their vision of a song (this song was made exactly for Dionne's voice character and capability). However, Aretha was able to REINVENT "I Say A Little Prayer" in a whole new way that's so distinguishable from the original to the point both versions worth praises of each own merit. Aretha Franklin is a master of music.

Stephen Colbert told my favourite Aretha Franklin story. He was hosting Carole King’s Kennedy Centre Honours ceremony and at the end Aretha went out to play Natural Woman. Stephen was standing in the wing with one of her people and he said, “Gosh, I wish I had seen her in her prime.” The guy just looked at him and smiled. And Aretha proceeded to bring the house down. You guys talked a a lot about her authenticity. The two words that come to me, especially in live performances are natural and organic. Maybe these songs are arranged to within an inch of their lives, but it doesn’t seem that way - she’s just in it and it flows out of her. Just found this channel and subscribed immediately. Please keep it up - you guys are awesome!

This strikes me as one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips. A new perspective for me on backup singing in particular, and such an education along with evident passion for the music.
I listened to Arethas music when her songs were released. Her amazing voice and delivery made me overlook the background vocals. Atetha was more than a vocalist and this video explores some of the secondary things about her music. Great topic, great guests, great discussion, very informative about vocals overall.
The biggest problems I have with many of the soul singers was the background music which I didn't like. There have been covers of those songs with instrumentation I preferred.
Paulette and Maia are incredible! What amazing women! Thank you for discussing how range doesn’t matter. I’m so tired of discussing how many octaves a singer has and what notes they can hit. It really isn’t important.
Thank you for reminding me to rewatch one of my favorite documentaries, 20 Feet from Stardom. Brilliant celebration of the true heroes of music, the background singers
I am by no means a music buff. However growing up in the 80s made me appreciate music from the soul. I love history and I'm technical. So enjoyed that aspect. I've subscribed to a channel I wouldn't usually. Enjoying this content. Keep the great work going.
As a lifetime resident and musician from Muscle Shoals, this video has been my favorite so far! Amazed by the impact that Muscle Shoals has left on recording and music in general! Also this show is probably my favorite thing to watch ever!
I love all your episodes, but this one was my favourite so far! Loved the honesty and the talk of authenticity. Genuinely touching. Paulette and Maiya are wonderful.
I waited a long time to watch this video… and HOLY CRAP this is probably my favorite one yet. Best quote: “That’s not music and stop it. You don’t want your whole meal smothered in gravy; you just want the biscuits with gravy.” It was so strangely validating to have a professional singer say that when it’s something I’ve thought for so long. Huge thank you to Maiya and Paulette ♥️ You ladies are amazing.

Oh, this was one for me - one of your best. As an engineer and muso over the years, vocals, and especially BVs are where I got my kicks. Talking to singers like these two were the main reason I would overrun studio time. Love it!!!
These interviews are a gold mine! Love how accessible and down to earth they are, thank you!!!
“She brought four chords and the truth” Daaaaaaamn!
Wow, I could've listened for hours to these two amazing women..!
I enjoyed this so much. As a singer I really enjoyed this you guys got a new subscriber. ❤
This has truly encouraged me to continue to be myself people tend to make you feel like you’re not that good of a singer if you’re not doing riffs and runs every five seconds, and I’m simply not that kind of singer.
I do runs and riffs when I feel it.
MAIYA SYKES… I was watching this video and hanging on your every word like ooh yes I like how she thinks about music… like just vibing like hell yeah she gets it, and I kept thinking you looked familiar but couldn’t figure out why… it’s because you are the STAR of my favorite Scary Pockets cover EVER, “Viva la vida”!!! I listen to it ALL the time!! Anyway. Keep it up, all of you! I love these videos!!
Learned so much! Need to watch a couple more times. Wish there were more examples.
Watching singers explain how it's all constructed kinda baffles me, it's so much more instinct involved, so much personal chemistry
I love content like this. So educational
Absolutely a wonderful discussion. Please keep up the good work. I look forward to your new videos every week. Thank you.
No idea why this came up in my feed but this is awesome! I am as excited as bearded guy listening to these two talk about music and singing! I know nothing about music except that I love it and I could follow this and feel a deeper appreciation for something I thought I couldn't love any more. Thank you for this!
Man, smart insightful conversation here. Lots of wow moments. Fantastic episode, great guests, great topic.
Oh my goodness, so much amazing wisdom from Paulette and Maiya! (And good on Ryan and Jack for listening politely. Knowing when to shut up is such an important skill for an interviewer.)
Okay listen here Professional Musicians React🤨🤨 I’m going to need you to get these two amazing ladies back on the channel because my word what a gold mine of an episode. From musicality to simply life lessons, I feel you could watch this episode 100 times and learn something new from these phenomenal ladies. Please bring them back good sirs…
And shoutout to you guys as hosts for letting them expound on their answers. So many hosts act as though they are scared to death to let a guest talk lol you guys are by far the best hosts of a show/sit-down/whatever you chose to call it. My new favorite channel for sure🤘🏽 Much love from Texas brothers
I could listen to this for hours.
This strikes me as one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips. A new perspective for me on backup singing in particular, and such an education along with evident passion for the music.
This was amazing. I love watching talented people pull back the curtain and show us why we love something
There have been covers of those songs with instrumentation I preferred.
y'all are doing a HUGE service to those of us who appreciate great music but don't know the techniques or the technical aspects of it. THANK YOU!
This was fabulous. Thank you to you all. This was a blessing, it really was. Would love to listen to Maiya more on technique.
That was awesome. The nuanced discussion of how great backup vocals are crafted with a great lead singer is amazing.
Just Love Aretha & Adele , love you All ! Wonderful Artist all of you
Paulette and Maia are incredible!
Brilliant celebration of the true heroes of music, the background singers
thank you for making long videos, all feel like they got so much more to say
Please bring these ladies to other episodes... Incredible video!
They just keep raising the bar with the show. Wow. Keep em coming!!!!
I am by no means a music buff. However growing up in the 80s made me appreciate music from the soul. I love history and I'm technical. So enjoyed that aspect. I've subscribed to a channel I wouldn't usually. Enjoying this content. Keep the great work going.
The skills and professionalism of these singers just floored me
As a lifetime resident and musician from Muscle Shoals, this video has been my favorite so far! Amazed by the impact that Muscle Shoals has left on recording and music in general!
Also this show is probably my favorite thing to watch ever!
OMG! They are amazing! It was a masterclass!
I love all your episodes, but this one was my favourite so far! Loved the honesty and the talk of authenticity. Genuinely touching. Paulette and Maiya are wonderful.
These two are THE BEST. Thank you for introducing me to them!
WOW wow wow. This is so good. So unbelievably great. Greatness can be so subtle and yet so, so CONSCIOUS when supporting a genius. Blown away.
Holy crap! Paulette and Maiya truly made this episode special. Amazing insight and demonstrations from your guests.
I discovered Rick Beato a couple of years ago and his analysis of songs opened my ears. Discovering you guys has done the same in a different way. I have learnt more about background singing in this video than I ever thought possible. Thank you!
