Hurt Remastered Performance by Elvis Presley Live From Elvis in Concert, 21st June 1977 in Rapid City. "Hurt" is a 1954 song by Jimmie Crane and Al Jacobs. "Hurt" was originally performed by Roy Hamilton. In 1976, Elvis Presley covered the song his beautiful yet powerful rendition reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 while reaching No. 7 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart No. 6 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, and No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart. He sang the song on stage 159 times, usually performing it with a reprise. In four of these instances, in Birmingham, Alabama, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Chicago, he ended it by going to the floor intentionally while simultaneously delivering a seven-second uninterrupted note.

I had seen him before this already 5 times in concert and had also a personal meeting with him. I wanted also to go to this one which was on June 26 1977 his last concert but my mom didn't let me go because of a school exam and then 6 weeks later he died. I was completely in shock and devastated and furious on my mom because it felt that I didn't have the opportunity to say goodbye of him. Elvis was and still is my best friend, fascination and inspiration

Even as he started to fail physically that voice never left him, the voice never failed. It's just as pure and strong as it was when he started, Elvis truly was the king!

My mom was at this concert and was in awe of him the whole time. She was just 12 years old!

So hard to watch this he was dead 6 weeks later, before he started the Vegas era , Elvis put the ensemble that was his show , the sweet inspirations , J.D. Sumner and the Stamps , Ronnie Tut , Glenn Harding James Burton and the female soprano Cathy Westmorland , Charlie Hodge was there too along with the orchastra , Nobody else had that because nobody other than Elvis could afford to put that on stage and take it on the road , if you watch some of his rehearsal videos you can see just how well they worked so much so they where able to do this night after night . Godbless him and may he rest in peace he brought an continues to bring so much joy to generation after generation.

The difference between Presley and an opera singer is that an opera singer when he goes for those notes wants to make it look at effortless - and there's a beauty in that. Presley tells you he's giving it all. His audience is never taken for granted.
Even though it is sad to watch, weeks before his death, it shows his wonderful talent. You are right, he loved show casing everyone's talent, I was at one show when he introduced all of his backup and lead bank members, that's why real Elvis fans can identify them to this day. He also show cased, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown and the fabulous sounds of Jackie Wilson. James loved Elvis so much he sat by Elvis casket at the funeral. Sometimes react to James Brown's tribute to Elvis, "Love Me Tender" it will bring you to tears. You guys are the best. Thanks.
He truly stayed that gracious humble boy from Tupelo. This brought a tear to my eye, knowing that shortly after this, he would leave us forever. 😢

He often introduced other famous singers in the audience like Led Zeppelin, Nancy Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Diana Ross and others. He never felt threatened by their fame or presence. Elvis always connected with the musicians and singers. He was the conductor in his own state of mind.
Elvis new his fans made him and if they ripped the shirt of his back, he would say "who cares, they paid for it anyway." He kills it here too, even when he was not in good health.

He also enjoys his own talents, like when he smiles in anticipation of those closing notes--he knows what he's about to do and he's thrilled to share it with his audience. Elvis saw all of the 'moving parts' because he choreographed and produced all of his recordings & concerts. He also used his hands/arms & body movements to conduct the band & orchestra.

Just look at the 68 Comeback Special. But, yes, he loves and appreciates his band and backup singers and truly enjoys their contribution. You can see it on his face. You totally picked up on that.

It’s a beautiful song but it’s hard to see Elvis so close to his death. Just makes me want to go back in time and do something to help him. Love Elvis forever.
Excellent observation near the end of the video. I like that you guys really pay attention and catch these things about Elvis that some miss. Elvis came from a musical family at a time when music was central to most people's lives. He was also raised in the Church where music was also very important and where he would have learned to respect, appreciate and celebrate each and every musician and singer's God given talent. It's also where he would have learned to give 110% in every performance. As you probably know, he also hand picked the musicians, groups and singers, many of whom were raised in the Church and in the south like he was. He never felt comfortable with the Hollywood crowd or the Vegas crowd. He wanted people around him who grew up with the same values as he was raised with... like his dedication and passion to do his best in every performance.

1st, knew I would like this video because Roland has the same name as a my late father who also Fell in love with Elvis as well ..music that my older brothers would play in our home. My mother got into his music, eventually. Didn't realize how much she did until he died that yr. of August of '77.

I didn’t think to attach this song with her. But I did when he sung the song “Are you lonesome tonight “. Because the cameraman kept panning over to his girlfriend Ginger Alden. She had her chin propped against her fist her elbow propped on her knee looking bored to death. I’ll never forget that.

I saw him after this show in Sioux Falls, SD just a month before he past away.
Spot on analysis regarding Elvis's appreciation for his backup singers, band, orchestra, etc. He often sang to them all and they interacted with him. They would cheer him on during some songs. Example, How Great Thou Art from this same concert 1977 during which Elvis hits an unbelievable note.
Elvis always chose his backup singers very carefully. The Jordanaires who were with Elvis for nine years from the mid 50's to the mid/late 60's sang backup on all his early hits as well as singing backup in his movies. The Jordanaires had a career of their own singing backup for such artists as Patsy Cline (Most of her songs), Johnny Cash, Ricky Nelson, Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, Gordon Lightfoot, Don McLean as well as several others. Then Elvis chose the Imperial Quartet and finished up with his long time friend J.D. Sumner & The Stamps Quartet. The common denominator for all these quartets were they WERE ALL Gospel quartets who had their own careers in the Gospel genre and all were very successful at it. Now for the ladies, the group The Sweet Inspirations and Kathy Westmoreland who sang the high soprano part ALL these ladies had an extensive history in the Gospel genre of music also.
So just remember when you hear the backup singers with Elvis, ALL OF THEM got their start in the Gospel music genre.

The best version is New Years eve 1976 performance. He does something at the end of that song that is jaw dropping.

The girlfriend was his fiancée - Ginger Alden - who accompanied him on the last leg of his final tour. She is the person who found Elvis on the bathroom floor in their Graceland bedroom when he died on 16 Aug 1977
Its crazy to think that The King passed soon after this. It was only about 6 weeks i believe after. Aswell as his voice being iconic he was the ultimate performer!! There are only a few that pushed to this level as artists (as in having the voice and captivating performances) - Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson and maybe the most modern of them being Robbie Williams

You two are so adorable. Have you done Dave Matthews band live yet? I HIGHLY recommend starting with their cover of All Along the Watchtower in Central Park. The opening bass solo is effing mind blowing and will hook you but Dave is amazing. He does an acoustic act with his pal Tim at Radio City you have to see.

This tv special aired about 3 weeks after he died. I was in college and only had a tiny 12 inch black and white tv. I wanted to see it on a regular size screen and in color. The boyfriend and I drove 60 miles home to watch it. Then turned around after it was over and drove 60 miles back to school. When I see these clips it triggers sadness.Just seeing the Mexican Sundial jumpsuit suit evokes negative feelings even after 45 years.
At this point of Elvis career obviously the handsome looks had faded and his ability to move was severely hindered. However, that amazing voice Elvis had until the very end and listening to Hurt is it possible his voice improved until the very end? The only vocalist I’ve ever seen, which that question can realistically be asked is Elvis Presley. Great reaction as always!
Elvis took care of his band, especially the female back ups. Not sure I mentioned it to you buy one of his female back up vocalist was none other than Whitney Houston's mom, Cissy Houston.
