High $ Veneer Cherry Stub Logs On Our Wood Mizer

- Facetiously speaking about the veneer, of course! Haha! These stubby logs belong to a customer who wanted some really nice 4/4 Cherry lumber, just over 2 feet long. The logs were so short we had to improvise in order to clamp and mill them. Even though they were small, they were beautiful and yielded a lot of awesome lumber. In hindsight, for the ending photo, I wish I had swapped the top boards (which were the least nice) for some of the other beautiful boards. At least, I found a good one for the thumbnail.

So glad to see I'm not the only one who saves the short cutoffs to saw for furniture. Really enjoyed the video. Keep them coming and stay safe and warm.
Absolutely, I love it when we salvage beautiful lumber! Thanks for the feedback and for watching! Linda
What has happen to LindaSawmill Channel? I hope everything is Ok. Would love to see more videos and updates to what has happened this past year. We get hooked on these families out here on youtube and like to keep up with them. I know things change but you would be surprised how many people love your channel.
Doing fine, Wish I had more time, I really miss editing videos for everyone! I record a few short ones here and there. Someday, I will be blessed with a couple idle hours and get one ready. Thanks for watching and waiting patiently!!! Linda

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! Linda
Love watching you all work together so well.
Missing your videos !
Hope everything is good with y’all .
Looking forward to more videos when you are able...
Thank you for this video. My boss and I have been going back and forth on how to cut short logs. We really want to set the lt15 up to do it but the hydraulic dog of our lt50 might make it easier. He wants to make some complicated gig system and I just want dogs that'll hold center of the log. Not complicated. Challenges like thus is why I love milling.
Good video! Beautiful pile of cherry wood! I always wanted a Saw Mizer. Maybe one day!
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! Linda
@@LindasSawmillCinema I love that shop! My dream shop! I could spend some time in a shop like that! I'd cut down every tree on my property!

Yes, and sooner than I thought! I miss doing videos, as well, but often time doesn’t allow many opportunities. Two videos just a month apart was refreshing! Happy 2019 to you, as well! Thanks for watching! Linda
Really enjoyed the video. Just to watch all of you and your mill in action. 👍👍👍❤️

Great video Linda. Even being short logs that cherry sure turned out nice. Amazing what you can get out if a firewood log
Thank you! Yes, they were very nice pieces of Cherry and I am glad they were salvaged! Linda
Great video Linda! As always great work from good folk!
Made the video with you in mind. :) After all, we couldn’t have done it without your logs! Thank you for being a thrifty recycler, it was a fun job! Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Thanks for the excellent video. Your channel was my introduction into videos featuring logs being milled. This must have been fours years ago. Since then I have searched out other sawyers, but it is always nice to come back to where it all started for me. Hope you have a safe and profitable 2019. :)
You are most welcome! Thank you for the feedback; I am glad to have introduced you to the milling world! :) Thanks for watching and I hope you have a nice year, as well! Linda

I've watched this video probably 5 times now, looking forward to whenever you have the time to post another one. I totally understand the editing time - I've got probably 5K hours of video but just never find the time to edit and upload. Oh well, hoping you are faring well in these China virus times, be well, take care of family and whenever you post again I'll be here to happily enjoy it!

You show us the full length version as i could watch you guys all day, it's like a well choreographed show. And those boards look great.
Unfortunately, it would mean changing a whole lot of edits and the last time I tried that there weren’t many views on the 2nd video. Though I do try to make a happy medium for all my viewers, some videos have more speed, some less. Thanks for watching! Linda
Love the family operation ...the way it should be
So sad that the beautiful log was chopped up, but so glad you guys were able to salvage so many pieces from them.
Excellent video Linda. I really enjoy watching you and your crew on the sawmill.
I haven't gotten to saw cherry in a while, but my husband and my son brought home a beautiful red oak log that I am wanting to saw... maybe get some quarter sawn lumber.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoy the videos! Cherry is my favorite wood species! Have fun with your Red Oak log! Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Do miss you guys.
Hi Linda, it is always nice to see your videos, it's a shame that they couldn't have decided to send you the log before they cut it to in short logs. Thanks Dennis
They would have been easier to mill, but the customer only needs short pieces for what he is building. Thanks for watching and giving feedback! Linda
@@LindasSawmillCinema Even if he did need the short pieces, it would have been better for you, the long log, and cut the pieces to his length, o wheel what done is done, hope to see you next time Linda, Thank you.
You don't have to shorten the videos on my account. I love to watch all to the end. Thanks for the wonderful videos.
I just found this... I've missed your postings... I hope all is good...
I want to say Merry Christmas to you and those you love... God bless you always...
All is well, thank you! Been very busy, I have lots of video material, just haven’t had time to edit them or read comments much. The kids and I have been helping an elderly neighbor with livestock and personal things, which basically eliminates spare time. Though, I recently recorded a couple short sawmill clips with my cell phone that shouldn’t take too much time to edit, so maybe in the near future...

n Germany, you would be one of the fewest who can cut such short lengths. You have to find the sawers first. The industrial saws only from 3, oo m (so 10 feet). All that is below is: firewood or chips. Pity ! Sawing a long trunk and then cutting the boards is more economical, but more wood loss. If the customer brings the logs, you do a good job. I'm sure, if I lived in IOWA, I would be synonymous with you, I like quality. Thanks for the video.
Wasting good wood is a shame! Occasionally, we process short Walnut logs from big mills that they cannot handle. Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Great video - unbelievably efficient. How long in real time did it take to mill up them logs?
@lindassawmillcinema Hello! Fellow sawyer here. I really do love your setup, Linda. I've got a few questions- What is the size and model of edger you run? Do you dry your own lumber on site? Contract that out? Or sell everything rough-sawn/green? Whereabouts are you located (general state or region)? Keep posting great content- y'all do a great job!
Hey Linda, just a thought, when you have leftover timber that you can't do anymore with. Is it possible that a woodturner might want to buy it?
Hope everything is good with y’all .

Would love to drop in on you while on this trip. What do you think? As a retired disabled Vet we try and get out and make our trips meet the family, plus educational as well as enjoyable for our Grandchildren. Ted in Gilbert, AZ.
If you should come across some Walnut Burls, those are money to wood turners and Walnut is preferred. May be a good side product for you. Not to mention 2" to 4"+ thick slab end pieces.
Linda,
What would you say is the best milling machine on the market? If you unlimited funds what kind would you buy? And would it be a bandsaw blade or a large circular blade style?
thx for new show:)

Who needs a gym membership when you're a LumberJack or -Jill, right?! Your young lad have turned out quite well, I'd say. It's nice to see young people who aren't afraid to break a sweat; and that's a reflection on the parents as well as the children. Congrats - it's not an easy road but sure is worth it.
Well, all except those 3AM feedings; oh, and those wonderfully aromatic diapers... hehehe! (in my 60+ years I've smelled some amazing things (former LEO - emphasis on 'wonderful'!!!) but I don't think there's anything as vomit-inducing as a 3-month-old's ripe diaper!)
Thanks for the entertainment!

How did you set your saw up to use hydraulics with the saw head in any position? On my 35HD I have to have the head within about 8 feet of the controls.
We bypassed part of the factory system and use an alternating current system. Thanks for watching! Linda
HI LIKE TO SEE YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER . VID IS VERY GOOD THANK YOU
Big favorite of your videos and work ! Hope you new upload >
great to see ya
Glad to have another video done! Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda
The audio isn't loud enough in the video to hear if or what is being said between you and Al, but is Al giving you verbal commands when and where to clamp down on the log or are you two that much in sync with each other that you know when he's ready for you to clamp down? The two foot long cherry planks sure would make for nice cabinet door panels! Thanks again for entertaining us for a while!
Not usually verbal commands. First of all, we have been together for over 3 decades. :) Plus, we have worked together milling for almost 26 years, as well as, for a year at the business where we met and started dating, so we usually know without verbalizing. Sometimes a hand signal is used, but often the signal comes after the other person is already in motion. Repirators and machine noise make communication difficult. The Cherry would make awesome cabinet door panels! My pleasure to entertain you, I am glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! Linda
Hope you are doing well ☺️

Such a shame that log couldnt be saved before being cut up so short. Nice work at the salvage. I can think of dozens of projects for all the wonderful Cherry. Tell me, how nice did the shop smell while cutting that?
Well, the owner of the logs doesn’t need longer pieces, so other than a little extra processing time, it wasn’t a problem. Cherry smells absolutely wonderful when milling! Thanks for watching! Linda
Linda, did you catch yourself saying "the log wasn't square?" Laughing with you, not at. Thanks for your great vids.
Haha, I actually meant what I said, because the flat sides of the partially squared log need to be clamped perpendicular to the next cut on the adjacent side. Though, I guess technical jargon we use day in and day out isn’t always understood by others without more words of clarification. ;)
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it, Thanks for watching! Linda

What will these pieces be used for? Thanks
please do a vid soon I was with you from the start and just re connected
You need to take more long weekends, nice video , but I suppose winter in IA is best to be inside the shop
That is what we decided about weekends. In winter, we still have lots of outdoor work. Retreiving logs, greeting customers, feeding fires, scooping snow, spreading ash/coals so customers don’t slip and fall, cleaning debris off the concrete, and the list goes on. Lots of snow lately, too, which reminds me of a video I started a couple of years ago of us sccoping snow. I should try to get that done. Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda
how heavy are those ? they sound hard as concrete when he taps off the dust on the floor . no way its as light as jack pine we use for fire wood up here .
Heavier than Pine, lighter than Oak, maybe 20-25 pounds each for the wider pieces. That is our youngest son tapping (he doesn't know his own strength, lol). Thanks for watching! Linda
Jack pine comes in at 570 in the Janka hardness scale and Cherry is at around 950. White Oak sits at 1350. Learn more here: www.wood-database.com/
Great video and those are nice boards! Is your son packing a heater while he's offbearing?!?
Thank you, I am glad you ejoyed the video. Yes, he packs all day every day. ;) Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda
Still miss your content.
The past couple years have been a whirlwind. We have been so busy, it seems that we just start to get caught up and things get rolling again. We had a terrible derecho (inland hurricane type storm) August 10, 2020, that devastated much of our state (770 miles of destuction). Thankfully, God kept us safe; our buildings have a lot of interior structure on the west ends where the winds came from. We experienced sustained straight line winds of 80mph for 20 minutes, gusting periodically up to 120mph, and over 60mph for 40 minutes, kept us in our shelter for an half hour. Much of the timberland was destroyed. The power was out at our place for 6 days and nearby areas for 2 weeks. Our sawmill had already been busy with the Onset of COVID, it seemed everyone was home wanting to work with wood and we sold out of species after species. Then after the derecho, logs started rolling in taking up so much of our concrete we barely had room to drive around on our shop concrete when loading and unloading trailers. I actually tried to start a video about it, but only got one clip before realizing that there was no way i could possibly have time to finish recording, much less edit it. Oh how I miss everyone here, especially our loyal audience, such as yourself. I so much appreciate you all! Hope to have time to edit some of the short clips I’ve managed to get, but glad for the business, as well. As always, thank you for your comment and thanks for supporting my channel! Blessings! 😊 Linda
Do you stack as they come of the saw? The process of 'ordering' your cut pieces/boards seems very random...
These boards will be restacked on drying sticks by the customer who owns the logs. The stacking is random, to tie the pile together best for shipping. Thanks for watching! Linda
@@LindasSawmillCinema Thanks Linda. I am fascinated by the way your business mills lumber - it is so unlike how we in Britain do it. I call it 'through and through' tho you may know it as 'French cut'.That would be how lumber or timber is milled or sawn in the UK.
Anyway, glad to see you remaking videos again. I sorely missed the mesmerising transformations that go on at your place. It's like watching a ballet...
