Sega Rally 2 (PC) 10 year - Year 1 (Lancia Delta Integrale)

  • So here's the thing... I've never actually played through the 10 Year Championship in the PC and Dreamcast versions of Sega Rally 2. I barely put any time into the original (secondhand) version of Sega Rally 2 for the Dreamcast I bought many, many years ago. I bought it quite late in the console's life cycle and to me, after I'd played so many better looking racers on the Dreamcast, like Daytona USA 2001, Hydro Thunder, Crazy Taxi and Tokyo Extreme Racer 2, it just looked so visually piss poor I didn't have the time of day for it. I took it back to the secondhand place and traded it in for something else within days.
The PC version is something I discovered years after, but again I didn't put masses of time into as by this point I was playing the actual arcade version of Sega Rally 2 using Supermodel emulator, even though it had busted graphics (which is not the case anymore) and I was tending to use the PC version mainly for the 4 arcade tracks - for some reason I never bothered looking into the PC version 10 Year mode. I hadn't realised as well that the home ports of Sega Rally 2 also featured changing weather and light conditions in the 10 year mode, so that was a nice surprise. Because I'm inpatient, I used a cheat years ago to unlock all the cars.
I've talked extensively in the past, in other videos, about just what a botched job Sega did on the Sega Rally 2 port for the Dreamcast, owing to the fact it was both rush released and compromised by the fact it was created using Windows CE (rather than the propriety Dreamcast software). Whenever I play the PC version, I'm always impressed by just how good it looks for an old game, particularly with it's smooth 60fps frame rate and the reflective effect of the glass in the cars. I always find myself thinking that this is what the Dreamcast version Should have looked like (the four DC games I mentioned before all look as good as this PC game. Hydro Thunder is admittedly only 30fps, but doesn't have any issues with horrific draw distances or anything like that). There is a hidden 60fps option for the Dreamcast version of SR2, which gets rid of a lot of roadside scenery to achieve this, but it's still pretty jerky and not that smooth looking.
I upscaled the video into 4K to stop RUclips compressing it so much after processing (It was running at 1080p when I was playing it), and uploaded it quite some time ago. Unfortunately, this was when I kept getting the issue of none of the under 2K resolution options showing up in my 4K upload - so nothing I can do about it now I'm afraid. If you're having problems watching it because of buffering try it on your phone in the RUclips app instead - whatever RUclips is breaking on the desktop version of the video doesn't seem to be affecting the app versions.
    My PC:
    Intel core i5-2310 @2.90GHz - 8 GB
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 - 2 GB
    Windows 7 Home Premium

Not graphically, of course, but this is the BEST version of Sega Rally 2.

Brilliant upload! I tried in vain to get this working on PC a bit back, shame as i really think this is the version to have.Supermodel runs the arcade version perfectly for me but this is what i wanted.Well done!

Cheers. FWIW, the game only works for me using my old 4:3 monitor. I've normally got a dual-screen setup with the 4:3 monitor acting as a secondary one and an old wide-screen TV as the primary. SR2 really doesn't like the 16:9 screen, I have to swap to the 4:3 one as the sole display. Another factor as to how come I can still run it is probably down to the fact I still use Windows 7.

Winning every year unlocks a new car and there're some FUNKY ones such as an Alpine A110, a Peugeot 106 or a Lancia 037 - You might need to locate the game's manual as it tells you the best settings for each track in each condition
BTW, haven't you unlocked most/all cars already?

@@EAprima I've heard of plenty of people through the years who claimed they couldn't beat it. Mostly on GameFAQs (and usually on the Dreamcast board). I'm one of them. I love the Sega Rally games but this 10 year mode got really tough around year 8 or so if I recall. I have no problems with the arcade modes in Sega Rally games, but this mode was something else entirely for me. It's been a long time since I tried. Maybe I wasn't calibrating my car correctly (eww... calibrating cars in arcade racers!).

@@SEGAHEADDY Ha, totally with you on the eww factor about calibration in an arcade racer. I need to playthrough this a bit more. I've been playing a bit of the PS2 version of Sega Rally 2006 via emulation recently and that gets seriously hard relatively quickly.

I'm surprised you think SEGA Rally 2 looks poor in comparison to Crazy Taxi.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  4 года назад +1

Crazy Taxi is 60fps DC Sega Rally (PAL version) is only 30. Crazy Taxi didn't have the issue of poor draw distance like SR2, where the background scenery just materialises from a grey looking haze. Visuals in Crazy Taxi just generally look a bit crisper and less grainy too. There's a secret 60fps code you can use in DC SR2, that gets rid of a lot of roadside scenary, but it's not particularly consistent and still looks a bit jerky.

@@MrThunderwing if only Sega rally was done programmed to the metal rather than Sega pleasing Microsoft. The graphics would have been near model 3 tier.

@@EAprima Yeah, as I mentioned in another comment here, you only need look at games like Daytona USA 2001, Ferrari F355 Challenge and Tokyo Extreme racer to know the Dreamcast could've handled a far better looking port of SR2, that could've been almost on a par with with the Model 3 arcade game.
