It’s like they wrote down a list of all her weak spots and are working on them one at a time until they aren’t weak spots anymore. This video is a treat if you really watch closely and it was great to see this breakdown. I’m sure she will also have a bunch of sessions to work on her defense as well.
I don't think she's weak at defense: she was literally playing at an ALL--DEFENSE first or second team level for like 2 to 3 weeks last year, while even being framed at like 157 pounds or 153 pounds of bulk. We can officially be honest that the TEAM DEFENSE was literally the worst thing related to the Fever last year--even Dallas was technically better than them besides the fact that Dallas had players that just didn't care at that stage of the season, anyway. She's probably looking like she's around the 160 to 165 weight mark, so she's probably building towards being the same class as a Sabrina type player. If she doesn't lose her lateral quickness and quick step, then she's bound to be a difficult player to beat at anything in individual 1 on 1 defense: she has great hands, IQ, awareness, and reflexes on defense to deny and even block shots. She's also now having the body to deal with the bulky players like Laney-Hamilton so that they don't post up on her as they did last year. If she can still keep up with the first steps of someone like Canada, Diggins-Smith, and Chennedy Carter, then she's definitely going to be a problem for individual scorers to try and score on her. She's still 6 foot and is looking like a 160 pounds to 170 pounds beast, so she's definitely around that Sabrina mold--but a little more length to work with. There were very few players that even could get her 1 on 1, besides using the screens to trap her. It just depends entirely on what the coach wants to do with her... If she wants Clark to be at an all-defense level, then I think Clark can handle it. If she wants her to play that offense-heavy role she had during the last 15+ games of the year, then I think that's also possible, but the defense won't be the same. All in all, Clark is extremely talented and hopefully she doesn't get injured next year. If she's perfectly healthy all year, she should arguably have a 20+ PPG, 6 or more rebounds, 9+ APG, 1+ Steals and 1+ Blocks because she's probably the only player that could put up those stat lines anyway. She was literally at 1 steal and 1 block for nearly the whole season, except when she started playing strictly offense near the end. The offensive game ended up over-taking her responsibilities on defense since Lexie would be guarding more when she played a bigger role in the lineup. Coach Sides moved past putting Clark in the SF position with how often she played Wallace/ Wheeler in lineups. I am more curious of what the team will do with the roles than the individual performance. Clark has proven that she's always striving to get better since she played in college--so her character will propel her to strive to be the best, and so she's basically going to go at it like a Kobe Bryant would. I don't see her ever accepting something as a fault, so she'll likely work on everything and probably is keeping some things to herself. She has the full-scoring package already, minus the consistent floater, but she's been added that. I don't see her really working on much more except the off-hand layups and shots around that baseline. Defenses often pushed her there which she typically started passing from there anyway, but I am sure she's aiming to score from there so she's going to be a full-time scoring threat at all times next year. If she adds a consistent finish around those two sequences, she's not really going to have any issues. The only thing I'd love to see more of from her is when she's driving right (or vice versa) then she's able to finish going towards the free throw line or the left. If she can do this then defenses can't even guard, her strong hand layups anymore since she can switch mid-drive because of this. They likely have to resort to double teaming her every single time which makes those passes even more effective. With just this added, she'd probably add another 6 PPG to her stat line. She's basically given this layup attempt by literally every player in the league at this point in time (Aja always allowed it since she knows that Caitlin has less comfort finishing those shots and it's easier for her to defend knowing that Caitlin is looking more to pass than take the shot) and when she adds a step-back baseline post-up as well, then she's basically Prime Jordan at that point since you can't stop her anywhere and just have to hope for her to have an off-night. Her 3 point shot is developed and refined. She's ranking near the top, if not the actual top, at making a shot with and without pressure. Her layup conversion rate was literally number 1 in the league. And if she can add a consistent mid-range baseline fade-away, then I don't see any player being able to defend her at all. She'll then have to practice scoring against double teams and be able to actually do it. (sort of what Luka can do in the NBA and what Anthony Edwards can't do just yet) Basically what Kobe does all the time.
@@ronkali5365 they literally wouldn't have had to get past them last year in the playoffs. just saying. it's all about match ups anything can happen in the wnba playoffs.
If she gets that floater game down like Trey Young she will be the MVP from every year until she retires...She will be unstoppable and I see that is what she is working on..... The league is in trouble... All she needs is to hit 3 to four of those a game and she will have 25 points easily with the rest of her arsenal..
Take back the narrative time! I'm not even sure anyone noticed this, but last season I watched a sky game (non-fever) and Chennedy Carter got blitzed, but she did they weird circular dribble that ran both blitzer's into each other and she got out of the blitz while still dribbling. It was an unusual move so I noticed it. The next fever game I swear I saw CC do exactly the same thing - like she had seen it and copied it. I've spent all season wondering if I imagined the whole thing!
This is the workout that never happens under Christie Sides. Caitlin doesn't have to figure it out herself. She has guidance and support to work on the things that will make her a better player. I also think that she has a coach and organization now that will have her back and fight for her if certain players and teams try to brutalize her again. Sides didn't lift a finger or make a peep as she watched her superstar player get the crap beat out of her. She only spoke up when she had something negative to say, or when she stupidly went public with things that should have been kept private. Christie is right where she belongs now - unemployed.
Last season one of her biggest gaffes was the mid range shot. If she can open that up than she is a threat everywhere on the court. That would equal another 3 or 4 buckets a game equaling another 6-8 points .
She's going to increase her PPG just from the improved 3pt %. If she gets official's calls that is another 6-10 points. Don't hold your breath for the WNBA to do the right thing. If they were fair with her she could average 30. The only thing if she became even more of a facilitator. But this team could average 100+ with a fast paced, fast break offense. And who doesn't think, if the team is averaging over 100, Caitlin couldn't be averaging 30+. A major player coming to this team would be a perennial MVP candidate.
You know a good way to get comfortable taking shots going left or right, is just take as many steps after your dribble that you need too. It looks like 4 will do the trick.
This is what you should be doing - working on new wrinkles to your game. I can’t tell you how many NBA players I’ve watched who can only shoot 3s - then you see them workout or warm up - and they only shoot 3s. You want to be hard to guard
