- With the new versions of the Pixel Remasters coming out on consoles, I figured it was about time I answered a question I get asked all the time, are the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters worth the purchase?

What are your thoughts of the Pixel Remasters or what are you looking most forward to with the newer versions of them?

Definitely looking forward to playing all of them on a big screen. Six is gonna be the best for me since i suck at sabins blitz inputs
I think the Pixel remasters are actually pretty good with the ability to change between original and new osts.
tho FF2's post game content of Arcane Labyrinth and sanctuary with Deumion and the Destroy spell(one of my fave spells in the series)
alongside Soul of Rebirth not being in's pretty sad, cuz those're literally what gives FF2 a lot of world-lore. doesn't help the arcane sanctuary is canonly in the lil mountain above Poft
the worst part being that ol psp 20th anni version of FF2(has both post-game dungeons) is basically thanosed from android phone since FF2 PR came out, unless you downloaded it prior.
so you'd have to emulate it or be super lucky to have it on the og system it was on.
FF2 PR may be near perfect, but I'm just happy we finally get to play FF2 on switch and not phones-

the one problem i do have with FF3 pr is bottomless bog and statues of the quests game overs being removed cuz that was part of the experience, the in-lore insta-deaths-
especially the bottomless bog cuz thats literally tied to the lore.
so now the chars magically don't die from it if they cross without the levigrass shoes which's kinda disappointing and especially immersion breaking.
but honestly? I think its a good thing for those who haven't saved or saved far away from those places.
I haven't been to able to play any of the final fantasy games due to other games I wanted to play among other things,but now after hearing all the cool things about it like Kefka

I don't care what people say, some people can't go and drop the kind of money to go get the gba and the said better versions. I myself see this as a way to bring some of my fave games growing up to the modern consoles. I'm dropping the 80 on the collection so I can relive my fave games.
Totally, not to mention the portability with the new versions. Not every option is for everyone which is why this one is so good, it is more options and options are always good. Thanks for checking out the video!
And not everyone wants to bother with emulation, so this is a great way for most people to access these older games.
@@Cuprite1024 to be fair emulation is pretty easy it's really more the morals thing that throw people off, I emulated them but I own the remasters on Steam, and am going to buy them on switch too when they come out a week from now.
The only thing better about some other versions is bonus dungeons. It was stupid to leave them out but I'm buying them day one.
I would loved to play FinalFantasy 1-6. But I am to young. So I am sooooo freaking happy, that this happend. I buy it anyways, its the most expensive gamecollection, I ever have.
All I’ve wanted for quite some time now is to play FF6 on a full console and tv again. I’m definitely willing to dish out the money, FF6 is my second favourite video game of all time after Legend of Zelda
Yeah, ffvi is my favorite FF’s and one of my favorites of all time too, one of the main reasons my review of it is taking a bit to do cause I try to be neutral but that is hard to do with something you love so much hahaha. Thanks for checking out the video!
I will say that not having 2's post game content and 4's ability to use everyone for the final dungeon bugs me, the collection as a whole is a great way to experience the original 6 games.
Edit: My favorite moment in the series is a spoiler for 5.

That older FF1 magic system was something I never got nostalgic for. I want the MP system. They also removed the peninsula of power. Wth man?!
Yeah, I am not a huge fan of the dnd style of magic either. Hahaha I remember finding out about the peninsula of power during my playthrough. Luckily it didn’t seem nearly as bad as it used to on the nes since overall it is all much faster. Thanks for checking out the video!
Controversial opinion, i really wish they animated all the games like the PSP versions. PSP FF4 was an amazing experience for me.
Music in the pixel remasters were amazing, reason enough to buy. Quality of Life upgrades were insanely awesome.
I think that is a fair opinion. I personally haven’t played the psp versions but have seen a good amount of them through speedruns and what not and those are great renditions of them. Thanks for checking out the video!

There's alot of debate among fans which is better, just based solely on looks I think the psp is better, but I will admit the pixel remasters do everything else better. I understand the pixels remasters wanted to be very purist about it which is ok too, its still a great package.
My dream is that they add a toogle animation button just for me lol
@@riyuphoenix4533 Thanks! I do think the PSP art style is really good, and although I am a purist in a lot of ways growing up with the originals I am just happy there are more versions to bring more people in to the franchise.
I really enjoyed the battle system changes they made to ff iv ds. Made the game feel fresh and a lot more tactical. I would still take that version of iv.
And it offers a great challenge. It's still my favorite way to play IV.
Not that much love and care how goddamn hard would it have been to give us the extra dungeons? I meant the Mega Man Legacy Collection, the Sega Genesis collection, Super Mario 3-D All Stars, NONE OF THESE GAMES COST 75 DOLLARS!!!
Yeah I think it is a licensing thing that meant that they would be excluded from these releases. I agree it would have been nice to have them but to be honest they were all fairly boring when I went through them last, just linear and no story tied to them so I personally didn’t really miss them but I totally see how someone would want them.
Great review. Spot on. Finally one that doesnt whine about the price of them. I keep seeing all these kids who think theyre developers that say they didnt do enough remastering to warrant the price. 200-300 hours worth of quality content for $75? Great price. They look and play great. Cant wait to get them on Switch as well

I'd say it'd be worth 75 bucks if it actually included all the added content from previous remakes like the dungeons from 1 and 2 Dawn of Souls, the After Years content for 4, the added dungeon of 5, and so on. At most this should be 49.99.
No it's not worth it. It is a lazy cash grab they are jacking up the price. It's complete b*******. I can think of plenty of games that offer more content. That are collections that don't cost more than the price of a g****** p s five game. Are you even aware of the clown that's running Square Enix nowadays? Because I guarantee you, if the guy from the Super Nintendo/PS1 era was still running that company they wouldn't be pulling this kind of crap. And look I'm not a developer but you're not either. You're not Square Enix. You're not Nintendo, you're not Capcom and you don't know wtf you are talking about either. This IS lazy and this is greedy whether you see it or not.
I paid 89.95 plus tax so 103$ for FFII when it came out on SNES and it was well worth it so this pixel version is a great deal to me even at 100$ in Canada. Great video by the way ! Subscribed 😊

I’ve bought these games about 10 different times and I’m buying them again. FF1 is the best game of all time.

As someone who genuinely thinks FF1 is the best in the series (i know, we are in the minority), i wouldnt buy the PR. It feels like an step back in every way compared to the previous remakes. Each one feels like it was build in the previous one and playing them in order of release feels like the core gameplay plus graphics were being constantly being upgraded and i always being surprised, but no more with PR which feels like a downgraded to every version except NES and MSX.
@@sebastiankulche the music upgrade alone is worth it to me. But I see your point. The PR graphics are true to the original, just clearer. The other remakes made the graphics upgrades in new styles. I can definitely see why many would prefer those. But other than the music there have been quite a few new tweaks added to make gameplay easier for many. Turning in and off encounters. Making battles worth more XP and Gil. Running and more. Not for everyone but great for many that don’t like the old school grind.
@@missinglink_eth Fair point, and if im being fair, i like being able to see the map with the chests, for someone who likes collecting all items like me. The music i prefer the other remakes although is not bad by any means. The other remakes also were more accessible in terms of EXP and grinding so its not exclusive of the PR.
What would really be the best would be having the games look like the PSP versions. Those versions of 1,2 and 4 look far better than anything here. Also having 3 and 4 be like the DS versions would be cool but that was probably never going to happen. Still all 6 games for $75 isn't too bad although good luck finding physical versions as Square didn't make many and they are already going for crazy amounts of money thanks to scalping.
I couldn’t get in to the 3d version of 3 personally but more options are always good. Yeah it is a shame the physical versions are going to be so difficult to get, would definitely be nice to have one for sure.
@@DancarnateI mainly like the DS version of 4 for the voice acting and the fleshed out story. Really made 4 a better game than the original. 3 I'm not a huge fan of,2 is not great either since it's more of a Sa Ga game than anything else,but more options would be nice yes. Although this is Square we are talking about here and they aren't exactly the best company anymore. If it wasn't for them dragging out the nostalgia cowbell every once in awhile they would be a pretty irrelevant company.
My one complaint about the collection is how they don't have any of the extra content from the GBA versions which are mostly the superior versions of the games. Also no FFIV the After Years.
Totally worth it they won't do another update for a long time if at all.
I agree, the only downside is the likelihood of a remaster in the 2.5d Octopath style is minimal, although when DQ3 comes out maybe it will sell well enough to change their minds. Thanks for checking out the video!
AI will pump out remasters and remakes like crazy, probably within a couple years.
I'm not super familiar with the Final Fantasy series despite my love for the RPG genre (Closest I've really gotten is Bravely Default), so this is a helpful video.
That being said, the only game I'm confident on which version I wanna play is 4, cause the DS version looks very appealing to me.

Why would I spend this kind of money for a lazy money grab. All they did was a minor polish.
Square Enix should make more physical copes and make them more available to puchase!
I agree, I personally like physical media much more than digital. I am not a huge fan of all of the physical copies of stuff being "limited edition" or something and warranting such a higher price tag, but if it means having a physical copy, so be it. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
For me, FFPR are "It could be better" it felt like it got sooo *close* into the definitive version of the classic FF, but many issues hinders the title for being the definitive versions:
-DLC contents, while personally i don't mind, some games benefited with this a lot more. Especially with the case of FF4 which literally adds a brand new game.
(iirc, Square wanted the Pixel Remaster to be as close as the original as possible, which is why no DLC content. I could be wrong)
-Fonts, while personally i don't mind as well, but i can see damn well why people disliked it. I don't know what made Square to decide to use this specific fonts out of all font existence
-Sprites, for some reason people disliked the new sprites? personally i'd rather have all 6 game to get "FF6" styled sprites. Final Fantasy Record Keeper literally done that.
Funny thing is, 80% of the issue can be solved via mods in PC version. With exception on the DLC content of course
These are all fair points, on the sprite don’t the only thing I would have wanted is in VI is if the enemy sprites either got the same love that the character sprites did or that the character sprites weren’t touched only cause they are so much more vibrant which doesn’t mesh quite as well but that’s a super small grievance. I picked up a Switch Play Asia copy. Now all I need is a Switch copy of Chrono Trigger, to complete my retro SNES Square collection on switch.

It’s a good product for those who want a streamlined experience to enjoy the older games but imo not the best version, for example PSP version of FF4 is still superior or imo SNES version of FF6 (with mods)

A recommendation get the steam version mostly because I get tired from rebuying the essentially the same game over and over each time it comes out on a newer console. You can always patch it and mod the game over the console version.
Yeah I already have the steam versions myself and since I don't really travel I don't really need them on the switch although I would have loved to have been able to get a physical copy.
I'm a big fan of final fantasy but these pixel remasters have no bonus dungeons/bosses etc, so I will not be getting it, first time every not getting a FF game ;/

My favorite Moment:
Final Fantasy 6, when Terra uses Magic in front of Edgar and Locke the first time. That was fun.
Besides that FF6 inspired me to learn english.
I am glad that I am able to play FF3 and FF5 on the switch. I never had them for Playstation.

By now you my fave is FF4, but I will say the Pixel Remaster of 4 was underwhelming when compared to 1,3 and 5. Also 2 still exists and six is as grand as ever. Awesome video

Omg, why have they not made these pixel remasters to be the definitive editions (ie: include all the additional stuff that existed before?!). UGH!
I believe it is due to licensing issues if I had to guess. Typically always comes down to something dumb like that.
I love the concept of boosting experience, cutting encounters, etc., since I don't have time to play super long games anymore. Minimizing the grindiness of these games is probably the only way I could see myself getting through any of them these days, so if EXP boosing and No Encounters is implemented on all six games, I'll be very glad I preordered the game from play-asia.

Never played FF growing up so when I heard of the pixel remaster coming to switch I decided that if I’m gonna play FF then this is the way to go. I cannot wait. 2 days till release and I haven’t been this hyped about a game in awhile.

God I can’t wait to play the final fantasy 1 remaster, it looks so cool and I can’t wait to actual try out some of the spells that I couldn’t play with on my NES, it’ll also be cool with the autosaves and the map it’ll be so much fun
It really is a good time, and with not only the new features of the Pixel Remaster but also the added items like Ethers it makes some of the more treacherous dungeons (looking at you Marsh Cave) much more tolerable. Oh man you are in for a treat then, 4,5 and 6 is the trifecta of awesome! Mind you a decent amount of that is nostalgia by 4 lays the foundation for story telling, 5 has amazing customization, and 6 is a masterclass in character building. I envy you, I want to go back and experience them all a first time myself haha

The extra dungeons/superbosses from the GBA releases could come later as DLC...so they cannot be completely ruled out.
Possibly but I honestly don't know if they would as if I am not mistaken that extra content wasn't developed by Square so licensing could be an issue. I am totally not for sure on that but here's hoping you are right. Thanks so much for checking out the video!

Is it worth to get them all or are 4-6 enough/sufficient? Because 75 bucks on switch is a lot of money (digital)
Personally I think each of them are worth the price individually. While I think the first 3 have gained the most from the pixel remaster treatment, the latter 3 are definitely the better games in my opinion. Either way you can’t really go wrong. $75 is definitely a little pricey but you could stagger that over some time getting different entries at different times. I do have some reviews of them individually if you would like to know more about them. Thanks for checking this vid out though, appreciate it!
@@Dancarnate thank you. If you buy them separately hey are way more expensive. (12 bucks for 1 and 2, 18 bucks for 3-6). And i get a special background (ingame?) when buying the collection.

Only played the beginning of each but never got invested more, now I pre-ordered 6 and can’t wait to see why it’s the favourite of so many people!

I’m excited to experience these titles for the first time, I’ve played 7 - 15, but never any of the earlier titles that paved the way.. I’ve heard FF4 & FF6 are godly, can’t wait.

Temper your expectations a little, these games are oooooolllldddd. They were phenomenal for their time and hold up well but I don’t think you are going to see anything new since the current games take a bit of each older game and the series has become the entirety of all the titles together. Anyways I hope you enjoy!!

This one is still a bit glitchy and no extra content mean this is not the definitive version. We'll probably never get them so I'll stick with the gba/better content versions. Another fail from SE
Picked up 5. I liked the original graphics better. These feel too bright, and just off somehow. Also super bummed about the lack of additional bosses and classes that were in the GBA and PSP console. What the hell?
Otherwise it was still a good game.

I hope they get the new fonts updated for the steam versions. The fonts were my biggest issue with the Pixel Remasters.

Hahaha yeah, they aren’t all perfect but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
Bought it. A 2nd time actually. For my pc and now for my switch. Is it to pricey?? No. Just buy the ones you want if it's to much all at once. Just ff6 for the snes or GBA is worth more then the whole collection. And if you bought the ff collection on the psp it would be even more. Or on the GBA still more.
Exactly! People think it is too expensive because it is older games, but that's the thing, because they are older it is even more expensive to purchase the hardware to be able to play them. Thanks for checking out the video!
ffxiv is the one that got me into ff so i might get it to try.
FFXIV is amazing, sunk quite a bit of time in to that myself. It definitely pulls from all of these classic games, personally I wished I had played through III prior to playing XIV cause there are a lot of tie ins I didn't get. Definitely worth it if you enjoy a more classic time. Thanks for checking out the video!
I find it hard to say no to getting FFVI if possible, the others i will have to think on though i have had fun w/ FFV on mobile so maybe that for being able to play on a larger screen since my Switch has a heating issue and stays on the dock all the time right now.
Dang that sucks with the heating issue. Yeah FFVI is my personal favorite of all time so it is also a no brainer for me too. V is great as well, and the improvements to the older ones make them much more playable but they are still dated in a lot of ways so I see the hesitation. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
I'm getting this game. But my god was it really this fucking hard to include the extra content from the other versions?
How are the translations? Does it leave original dialogue intact for FF4? Or does Faris still read horrible like she did in the PS1 version of FF5?
I mean it wasn't as bad as the OG translation from the ROM back in the day but I honestly didn't notice anything bad about it so should be good I think. I know they kept the Spoony Bard line in FFIV. In FFV Bartz isn't named Butz and if I am not mistaken that was the thing that tipped off that it was the bad one? Either way thanks so much for checking out the video!

Although I own all systems, Sony have been proper hypocritical lately over what companies are allowed exclusives… especially when they’ll buy squeenix most likely.

I have played a few of the PRs and had a good time with them. FF1 is so much more approachable in the PR version!
The main thing keeping me from grabbing the others is time to play them :)
I hear that, society will one day look back at this time and wonder how we all got through due to our horrendous Steam backlogs hahaha

I wish I could enjoy these, but Japanese developers are obsessed with seizure-inducing flashes, increasing the contrast and frequency of these over the SNES originals, which I'll be sticking with.
I’m curious as I recently played through them and while I wasn’t necessarily on the lookout for the flashes, what are some of the instances that the pixel remasters have? Offhand I can’t really think of any full screen flashes other than maybe ultima on ffvi? I am just genuinely curious so I can make a mental note of it incase someone asks me in the future. I want to learn the games. I came to the series through the first two films. I wish I could get the PS4 pack, but will probably have to be happy with Switch. I want Nintendo to finish physicals of the rest of the Zelda games as well.
Yeah, getting the physical versions of stuff these days seems to be way more difficult than it should be hahaha

Final fantasy has always interested me but it's hard to hop in. Hopefully this is a good point to hop on?
Arguably this is the best time to get in to the series. All the titles of the Pixel Remasters will still be more of a classic experience so they may feel a little slower than some newer rpgs. Out of these 6, I would recommend 4 as a pretty straightforward experience with some memorable characters, 5 can be a little more difficult in party makeup but allows for the most customization. 6 is my favorite in the franchise as the characters are so memorable. The first 3 games I enjoy but they are probably a little tougher to get in to for most people as they are just the oldest. Outside of these 6, 10 is a great one too if you would like something with voice acting. I have done reviews on the first 5 with the 6th to come out soon if you want more details on those. No matter what you choose though, they are great, I hope you enjoy and let me know how it goes!

@@Dancarnate I have decided that I'll play them 4, 5, then 6, then go back to 1-3 and see how it goes once I'm a bit more comfortable with the series. The only one I've played before is 7 and that was quite a while ago and I don't even think I made it out of the tutorial lmao

It does not, it is just the base game, none of the dlc or other stuff like After Years.

I like the pixel remasters because it doesn't change the original sprite art like every other version does, stays faithful to the original sprites/pixel art.
Yeah the original pixel art is classic, especially in FFVI. It is also a big reason in my opinion why even the original games aesthetically have aged very well. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@AS-fu1kd having played when I was younger I am a stickler for the original music, esp for FFIV which is timeless. But I do think they did a good job with most of the reorchestrations
And mix it with a lot of things that clash with it, like GBA backgrounds, realistic water and horrible font.

With the EXCEPTION of FF2 HELL YES just not at the full 75+ cost for all 6 games at once besides the best games in the set are the LAST 3.

Even with the in game cheats FF2 still is not for me.
Final Fantasy VI imo looks worse here for some reasons, I don't like the color they used and for some reason the animation of the characters's sprite is less detailed than the previous version.
Final Fantasy I has unfortunatly been made way to easy, and FFII sadly is still not really great gameplay wise. And I'm sad they didn't reuse the PSP version style of graphics of FFI, II and IV which to me looked amazing.
Overall I get the feeling that the most worthwhile Pixel Remaster is Final Fantasy III, which FINALLY port the original 2D version which was never release outside japan and never got a single remaster before.
I can see the difference for sure, I don’t necessarily dislike it but it does look brighter than the originals and does clash a little bit with the enemy sprites as they are essentially the same as the original.
The PSP versions of I and II are pretty dang godly and the mp change makes it much easier than the nes. I personally didn’t care as much for the IV version, probably driven mostly by nostalgia. The PR version of III is really the only reason I ever went through the game as I was really turned off by the 3d mobile port to steam.

I have a hard time taking this question seriously in general.
There is no easy way to access these titles on modern devices other than emulation, and to use original hardware or find original copies is much more difficult and much more expensive. These games have also been altered in quite a few different ways, which to me does increase their value somewhat even if we don't like some of those changes ourselves.
Are they worth it in terms of money? In my personal opinion, yes. Are they worth it overall, considering how difficult playing these titles has become without emulating or using older hardware? Again, my answer would be yes. At 80 dollars, each game individually ends up costing about 13.50, which is a steal considering we're getting so many changes and not just another port of old PC versions. I'm a fan of the series to begin with, but if you want to play these titles at all or are a fan of the series in general, I can't see how the package wouldn't be worth it. Now if only Square weren't such fools and they would release the damn physical copies outside of their online store, that would be nice!

I don't know, I hope you are right but I am skeptical since I believe there is probably some licensing issue as I don't think Square were the developers of those dungeons. Either way, we got some awesome versions to play, thanks for checking out the video!

Another is I would be more happy for switching encounter off but gonna be in case of Mind Flayers during FF1.
And Final Thought: I could toggle Gil and AP and properly EXP to 0 to get more Gil and AP without getting way overpowered in FF5 trying to collect every Blue magic spell and Lenna will be my pretend staying dead storyline wise for Level 5 Death Level 4 Gravity Level 3 Flare and Level 2 Old perfect plan for me.

I would say they are overpriced, they have been trying to sell these for quite a while now, I remember they used to be around 7.99 on ios back in the day.
These games at most are worth 9.99, & I have had the urge to get FFVI, but not for 17.99.
Pixel remasters are the very definition of soulless
I really dislike that they put exp multipliers in the remasters 😔 I’m literally going to have to buy a different version for an authentic experience, big swing and miss in my opinion
Well the good part is you don’t have to turn them on. It is very similar to all the bonus stuff that exists on all the 3d versions like VIII, IX, X, etc… I also would never use them but to get newer people in to the franchise and let them check out these classics, I think it’s great.
@@Dancarnate Yeah im sure anyone that actually gets nostalgia from these games will not touch those settings at all. It's just so dissapointing i wanted to share these with my little brother as he has played 9 onwards but i know young gamers and they'll hit a god mode button if there is one :( So that idea is pretty much scrapped for us. Also as an ex competitive trophy hunter i think it's dissapointing that they don't disable trophies because now none of them mean anything, its all Trivialised
I do agree with the trophy’s not be disabled with essentially cheats. As I did was at one point top 20 in retroachievements and have done a fair share of my own cheevo hunting I agree you aren’t really achieving much if you have a god mode do all the heavy lifting. I mean I took down a cyberdemon in Doom with just my fist for an achievement, so I get it hahaha

What are your favorite FF games on this bundle ? And why?
Final Fantasy VI is my fav FF of the series so definitely going to be that one. Every character is given their moment to shine while elaborating on their personalities and backstory's. The only downside is that magic is a little too strong and once you start learning it with everyone it kind of trivializes most of the battles in the game. Also I learned to be a musician because I wanted to play music from FFVI so the nostalgia is big for me.
As far as the game that surprised me the most in this bundle it would have to be FF3. I really feel like FF3 was the one that got the most of a glow up from the original Famicom title.

Hey I already have this game preordered on switch are you picking it up? I don't mean to sound so negative truth be told final fantasy six is my Favorite game of all time. In fact I was thinking about which game I was going to start with first. And I think i'm going to start with IV and then immediately play VI. How about you? Are you picking This up on PS4 or NS?
You're totally fine. I don't plan on picking it up for Switch as I don't really travel all that much these days and I primarily play my switch on the go. VI is also my personal favorite, one of the main reasons I haven't finished my review of it in the series yet as I attempt to be as neutral as possible and when a game means as much as VI does, that is difficult to do hahaha
