  • Everyone debates, in some form, most days. Sometimes we do it to persuade; other times to learn, discover a truth, or simply to express something about ourselves. We argue to defend ourselves, our work, and our loved ones from external threat. We do it to get our way, or just to get ahead. Two-time world debating champion Bo Seo joins us for a thrilling intellectual adventure into the art of debate - with practical lessons to improve your own life and work.
Bo Seo is a two-time world champion debater and a former coach of the Australian national debating team and the Harvard College Debating Union. One of the most recognized figures in the global debate community, he has won both the World Schools Debating Championship and the World Universities Debating Championship. Bo has written for The New York Times, the Atlantic, CNN, and many other publications. He is currently a juris doctor candidate at Harvard Law School.

So there's still no hope when finding out that you are actually debating against people who are not logical enough to say anything concrete, often repeat themselves, easily get distracted and feel frustrated, get annoyed like why are you even challenging the norms in the first place?

    Good talk though!

I liked that. Because we always think that we should be talking fast to win an argument. I myself, as a therapist , talk very slow. I work in forensic psychiatry and I take my time to respond when a psychopath is trying to manipulate me. We are in no hurry and we think before we speak.

@@martinepeters9891 I understand in your line of work that would work perhaps
but say, for example, you're addressing a team that's discussing ideas...
A brainstorming session is more or less a debate I'd like to believe
& your style would for sure kill morale
In a real-life world I can't 1.5x your talking speed (unfortunately so considering you have such strong points)
Pace conveys emotion & affects your audience's ability to follow what you are saying. What you say is good but with HOW you say it... you might lose some people along the way is all I'm trying to say
(Could be subjective in my part, I don't know...)

@@kevin_kk yes, sometimes we can talk faster, or, when I don't know what to do, I'll say: let me think about that and I'll get back to you
