Bad things are you cannot easily tell when the battery is low (during the daytime) and it will start coming down when the battery is critically low and if it is over water (such as a lake), you will only have a short amount of time (depending on how high above the water it is), to get it back safely on land. Why "waste" money on a drone with GPS and camera for a first drone, when all you really want to do is fly something to get your "feet wet" (and if the drone goes into the lake, you probably will get your feet wet). Also, it can only be flown "safely" when the wind is maybe 6 MPH or less, otherwise it might not fly directly into the wind or worse, the wind will take it out of range.

Hi, great video and so many options. For music outdoor concerts, mountain biking, days out, nature, and coastal pics, overhead shots to enhance my photography portfolio in local park events, and up to £200 new or used, what would you recommend? It don't need to be fold in wings, just solid, reliable, sd card for many pics, and a good, stable, clear picture.... as good a camera as possible, which is my priority. 12mb+ 1080p. Still shots over video footage.... I guess I may be asking for much on this budget, please can you advise on your top three for my needs please.
Thanks for doing this. I have been intending to get a drone for a couple years, but, in that time, they have become ubiquitous. There are too many models and features to make a decision. One question I have--for anyone listening out there: what is the flight distance? How do they compare? If I want to fly it over large sections of woodland, can you accomplish that with the feed back to your cell phone?
Average flight distance of a low cost drone is between 200 and 500 meters. They all get their distance from your phone. Crappy phone.... crappy distance. The better the WiFi module in your phone and where it is positioned, the greater the distance.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Thanks. Back to homework. But, say, if I got into the $500 range. Is their antenna sensitivity substantially better that it will increase the range significantly, or, is it simply the mechanics and limitation of the phone signal regardless? Sorry for the tekkie questions. You're being very generous with your knowledge.
@@kurzhaarguy The more you pay the better the technology. Top technology is the DJI Mavic 2 with Occusync 2.0 (massive range with no interference). Next is the Mavic Pro from years ago with Occusync 1.0 (still impressive range). Next you get into what is known as enhanced Wifi. Drones like the Autel Evo quickly jump frequencies to maintain a great connection (many miles). Then there is the Wifi that drones like the Parrot Anafi, Mavic Air and Mavic Mini use, Hubsan Zino, Fimi X8 SE all use. Great distance as long as you face the the drone and have nothing come between your connection. With this connection you can get a couple of miles. Finally there is the Wifi between phone & drone which is unreliable when there is the slightest interference.

@@billyliburdi2147 For me it is good for a budget drone, the video quality is like around 480p to 740p and smooth to pilot, it's still depends on you if you looking for a perfect quality drone you really gotta need to buy the 200$ and up drone like said in the video. (Note: I read the description, as well as the comment made after posting.) I like the video, but I think it would have been a bit more beneficial if you could have focused on two or three "best of the best" beginner drones, and explained the pro's and con's of each. I get that you have detailed videos of each drone, and you wanted to give a wide selection, but for an overview video, I think it would have been more helpful to give a "glimpse" at some of the main contenders, with nods to some of the runners up. It's a bit daunting to see the amount of videos that are listed in the description. Just my opinion on the matter. I'm sure you have good reason for doing things the way you did them; just something to consider. I hope it didn't sound like I was being too negative. I really do appreciate the effort that you've put into this.
Hey - I need a good quality drone for my son who is 5. I don't want super cheap and I def don't want to spend over a few hundred to wave good bye at when he crashes it. There is one right now on sale at Walmart for black friday. Is this one going to be good for him or should I spend a little more? ( Drone maker and model - Snaptain S5c - 720 p )
I still like where I started at about $30 with a Syma drone. Very manual. Made me appreciate GPS drones. Yes, I had to endure a few head bowed moments as it ended on a roof, not even mine. But that is a toy. Next I started with a Bugs 5W. 1st GPS drone for me and I fell in love. Then DJI got all my money. Your videos are the best!!!
I’m a beginner and I can tell you EXACTLY what a person is looking for. Simply an easy to fly drone with a dedicated FPV headset that doesn’t need your phone, and it gives good video and can fly 2 or three miles and last out to get back. Simple as that.
@@Gojirasu "Simple as that." Nope, you missed the primary consideration of most beginners. Cost. And when you put a $200 cap on the cost, then there aren't any which have a headset that doesn't need your phone. That headset with no phone requirement puts a $1,000 minimum price tag on it, that's just because of the cost of the headset, I have no idea if they even make them for drones. Anyway, it's never simple, that was my point. :)
Enjoy your drone passion as seen in your reviews. I’m new to drone flying and hope to use a drone with my beehives. The ability to get a closeup view of trees should prove useful in finding the best location. No MJX MEW4-1 listed yet. Why pay $1,500 when a $300 drone will work just as well? What happens when you lose or crash your $1,500 drone? (my rant)
Well, most any time you buy a very expensive drone you get full crash warrantly for like 2 years, so theres that, but I do totally understand where youre coming from. Thats why i bought the mavic mini cause you get crash warranty and under $400
Was your first drone made by dji? What was it like operating a high end drone as a first time user? I’m asking because I’m thinking of getting a dji drone which costs $1400
Hey Captain! I looked at your video and a couple others but went with your recommendation and bought the sjrc z5 as my first drone. I crashed it 3 times in my backyard two days ago but took to the park today to hone my drone skills. Wow this is the best thing ever. I will upgrade some day once I get the hang but for now I'm just saying thanks for your awesome recommendation. Wish I had this when i visited Lake Louise last November.
ANY potential new drone owners - please listen to Cap'n Steve here - his summary is accurate and honest - you won't go far wrong listening to his advice (I've been flying many, many different drones for nearly 8 years now!)..... Personally I must currently recommend the Parrot Anafi - just an amazing and top value for money all round drone which I know Cap'n Steve approves of ..... unfortunately it is a little more expensive than some of the great starter Drones Cap'n Steve has recommended here - so in conclusion I guess - 'you pays yr money - you takes yr chance!' 😁😍💲💲✔✔ Great video Cap'n - thanks!
I lost my mind with the cereal box comment.... hahahahaha Most people watching this video have never had the joy of digging to the bottom of a cereal box for the "prize". ;-) Loved it!
Hey captain, really taking your recommendation on the JJRC Heron, but I'm trying to understand all the ruckus on amazon with these variable company names. I've seen models for sale as Ronshin JJRC, then just JJRC alone. Is there a difference? The Ronshin brands are distinctly fewer dollars and I'm skeptical.
The best for begginers cheap and good at the same time for me right now is the parrot bebop...why? Cause that thing can withstand crashes like no other and price range from 120.00-150.00...that was my first one and at the begining i crash that thing into fences, walls, palm trees etc etc...it even withstood a crash from 500' like it was nothing while testing an app that overides the 400' parameter...i took it to high and the batt dies still 500' above...just a small crack on the batt case...no props broken no legs nothing...just switch the batterie and flew again like new.

Great vid again! Lost my beginnersdrone yesterday 😞 is there a drone that has a SIM-connected auto-powered GPS-tracker on board, like you can find to trace back your dog. So in case you start a search party, all you need is your phone, I hope you might know the answer ???

@@matus201 If you are interested in being able to get smooth video with your drone (for video blogging or to use on social media) you're going to want to look for a drone that either has a gimbal (2- or 3-axis) and/or uses Electronic Image Stabilization. Otherwise the video is going to look jittery/jumpy/shakey unless you are flying in very calm conditions and you can fly smoothly. There are two drones in the sub-$200 price range that I would suggest: * Ryze Tello - $99 (not mentioned in video because it isn't a GPS drone) * JJRC X9 Heron (was mentioned in the video) 1 - Ryze Tello: The Tello Drone provides very good pictures and extremely smooth video quality. Even though it's camera is only 720p it will give you better video (not shakey) than most if not all of the drones listed in CaptainDrone's video...and it only cost $99 (or slightly less on sale). So you ask..."How could it provide better video than a 1080p camera?" It can because the Tello has excellent electronic image stabilization (EIS)....and it's a good quality 5mp camera. As I noted the Tello is not a GPS drone but because it has an Optical Flow Sensor on it is incredibly stable and it holds it's position extremely well.and thus easy for a beginner to fly and this stability helps get good crisp photos. The Tello is very small and light (only 80grams)...so it doesn't like the wind. So it's small size and weight could limit your flying to only relatively calm days (5mph or less winds) or indoors if it's windy....and it is a great indoor flier. It does have a "fast" mode so you would use that mode to fly on slightly windier days but when you use "fast" mode the EIS is automatically disabled....so you won't git the smoothest videos. The Tello has a good flight time for a Toy Drone but it's still only about 11 minutes in reality. Also keep in mind the Tello doesn't come with a controller...it's intended to be flow via the app that runs on your phone. You can buy the GameSir T1d controller if you want to fly it with a controller and that will cost you an extra ~$30-35 USD. Batteries for the Tello cost around $16/each. If you go with the Tello I'd recommend you purchase at least 3 batteries....so that will give you 4 batteries total (it comes standard with one battery). I'd also recommend that you purchase a multi-port battery charger (3 or 4 ports) so that you can charge multiple batteries at the same time. You can find a 4-port multi-charger on Amazon for about $15. So it's worth it because other wise you have to charge the batteries serially and it take about 90 minutes to charge a single battery. 2 - JJRC X9 Heron: Of the drones mentioned in this video there is only one drone that uses a gimbal (2-axis) and that's the JJRC X9 Heron. It doesn't have EIS. The Heron has a reasonably good 1080p camera. You can find the Heron on a number of Chinese websites (banggood, gearbest, etc) for less than $200...depending on how many batteries you purchase with it. Also keep in mind it uses the 5.8ghz Wifi (not 2.4ghz) so your phone will need to support 802.11ac Wifi to connect to the drone otherwise it won't be able to talk to the drone. While the Heron is still considered to be a small drone (258gram) it's quite a bit larger/heavier than the Tello so it can tolerate the wind much better than the Tello and it's going to have more flight range (distance) than the Tello. If you purchase the JJRC X9 Heron I'd recommend that you purchase the combo that offers 2 or 3 batteries for it because the flight time is only ~15 minutes per flight. I believe the 3 battery combo package will cost you just over $200 (on sale). The other sister drone of the JJRC X9 Heron is the C-fly Dream drone. It has all of the capabilities of the X9 but it typically cost a bit more (~$240) than the JJRC X9 drone because it has better positioning capabilities (supports both GPS & GLONASS). Other thoughts: Like many drones these things go on sale quite often. So if you're patient and diligent you may be able to catch these drones on sale for an even better price. Keep in mind when you are budgeting for a drone...you need to think about all of the "accessories/extras" you're going to need/want because they can add up VERY quickly. So figure out what you need/want and price out the TOTAL cost (Drone + accessories/extras) so that you'll know what it will cost you before you purchase. The accessories/extras you may want to consider are: - Extra propellers (at least one if not 2 extra sets) - Extra batteries (2 or 3 extras) - Multi-port charger (capable of charging 3 or 4 batteries at one time) - Controller? (Most drones include a controller but not all do...e.g., the Tello doesn't ) - A case to hold the Drone and store you accessories. Hope this helps Cheers
@@bigtreesfall Thanks, glad it helped someone. Also If your budget is a bit higher. $300..I'd recommend the Fimi A3...It cost $299 but I've seen it for sale recently for $229...and at that price it is a steal. It has a great 1080p camera, with a 2-axis gimbal and EIS on the third axis. It will give you buttery smooth 1080p video. and 1080p is plenty good enough unless you are doing professional work.
Whatever you do DO NOT BUY Mavic Mini... That drone flies away without touching remote and once the GPS disconnects you will never find it. GPS is a joke. You will be stuck with a remote, batteries and cables

@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Is there any way, that you've seen, to amplify the WiFi signal and get out, say 1 mile?
@@kurzhaarguy Wifi repeaters will do that. I've never used one but you can find videos of them on RUclips.
Finally there is the Wifi between phone & drone which is unreliable when there is the slightest interference.
a very good video and very well explaind of the drones you can buy, thankyou captain drone
I love ur video capt..
Thanks Cap. So many options. Can you comment regarding extra batteries? Are they fairly universal. Preferred foldable for hiking
When you buy a low cost entry level drone, you have to order batteries at that time as they are usually not available separately.
Would you recommend a Mavic Mini for beginners?
Yes, 100%

You didn't mention specifically which one had the gimbal. Do they all feature an auto stabilisation function?
In the individual reviews you'll see that the HERON X9 has a 2 axis gimbal.
He said in the video it was the 1 with the price increase and works best indoors.
“Let me put it here so you can actually see it”
So if my phone have the WiFi protocol 802.11ac then I can also connect my phone to the drone and se what the drone see?

This is top video for me who just started the new hobby . . . And this video is your favorite in your channel capt
I’m a beginner and I can tell you EXACTLY what a person is looking for. Simply an easy to fly drone with a dedicated FPV headset that doesn’t need your phone, and it gives good video and can fly 2 or three miles and last out to get back. Simple as that.
Yes
Si.
Can you give a brand recommendation? I'm just developing an interest; don't want to spend more than $100 for my 1st one.

Cool idea! What type of lens would I want for the type of closeup you want to get with a drone? Thanks.

Hey captain, really taking your recommendation on the JJRC Heron, but I'm trying to understand all the ruckus on amazon with these variable company names.

Hi, can anyone suggest a drone from this list (or not, but still in the same price range) with the best camera (video quality), thanks!
I'm in the same situation. Which one if I want best camera quality?
@@matus201
If you are interested in being able to get smooth video with your drone (for video blogging or to use on social media) you're going to want to look for a drone that either has a gimbal (2- or 3-axis) and/or uses Electronic Image Stabilization. Otherwise the video is going to look jittery/jumpy/shakey unless you are flying in very calm conditions and you can fly smoothly.
There are two drones in the sub-$200 price range that I would suggest:
* Ryze Tello - $99 (not mentioned in video because it isn't a GPS drone)
* JJRC X9 Heron (was mentioned in the video)
1 - Ryze Tello:
The Tello Drone provides very good pictures and extremely smooth video quality.
2 - JJRC X9 Heron:
Of the drones mentioned in this video there is only one drone that uses a gimbal (2-axis) and that's the JJRC X9 Heron.
Other thoughts:
Like many drones these things go on sale quite often.
The accessories/extras you may want to consider are:
- Extra propellers (at least one if not 2 extra sets)
- Extra batteries (2 or 3 extras)
- Multi-port charger (capable of charging 3 or 4 batteries at one time)
- Controller? (Most drones include a controller but not all do...e.g., the Tello doesn't )
- A case to hold the Drone and store you accessories.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Jet Martin .....phenomenal break down. Very much appreciated!!
Cheers mate, great beginners video, this has helped me out, I'm going to watch all the reviews before I buy😋👍
