  • In this episode I explain how I started to change my alternator and ended up completing a timing belt service on my LX. Resurrecting this salvaged LX has taught me a lot about older salvaged vehicles, especially that they're not always straight forward. So, even though I thought this would be a relatively easy alternator replacement, I ended up taking most of the front engine apart. It was quite the journey and I learned so much. I hope elements of my experience help you if you have an LX or LC and decide to tackle a similar project. If you have any questions leave me a comment below or DM me on IG @The_Nonnell. Thanks for watching.

    Two years later. Has the sealant held up?
    Thanks for the great LX content.

      You’re referring to the sealant at the water pump? Yes, it’s been great. I check it from time to time and no issues as of now. I’ve put about 40k miles on the LX since performing the timing job.

    Btw.. appreciate the honesty and not cutting out the bit about the bolt, the leak, etc. Too many people on here try to pretend they are perfect, but we all learn as much from the problems as we do from things that go exactly as planned.

      100%. I like to present it has real as possible. Also, a lot of these jobs I tackle are first attempts for me, so there is bound to be some sort of setback along the way. I appreciate you saying that. Thanks!

      Thanks! Yes, that was a gut wrenching moment, but fortunately it turned out alright.

    Feel for ya having to open it up again for that one bolt 😦. I'd say it looks better without the running boards, if anything like you said add some sliders. Great video btw.

      Yeah. After putting in all that work and seeing that bolt, my heart sank a little. It was refreshing to find out through video evidence what I had done though. I agree with you, rock sliders are probably going to be the way to go. They will look nice, provide some protection, and allow me to access the top of the LX. Thanks for the comments and support!

      I’m curious about the Heilcoil thing you mentioned? Is that like a filler / screw in replacement for the theads? Hate ya missed recording that part. 😕

      Since I had to drill out the old bolt, there was a slightly larger hole in the aluminum afterwards. I could have tapped that hole with new threads and used a larger bolt but I wanted to keep the factory bolt and size. So, I decided to use helicoils which when installed gave me the same thread size and pitch as the original bolt. It requires drilling a larger hole, tapping it, then screwing in the helicoil threads. After they’re set the old bolt could be used to secure the alternator. It’s quite the process and something you don’t want to screw up. Fortunately for me it turned out ok.

    Great video! You should definitely consider making an Amazon Affiliate Account to help offset the price of this project!
    ***Also just a thought of mine as I was watch was the interchangeability of parts between the LX470 and 1st Gen Tundra/Sequioa. It might be worth looking into! Would definitely be easier to find used parts at a junkyard!

      That's a great idea! I've known about it, but haven't taken time to set anything up yet. I can definitely see how having that account would be beneficial. Thanks again!

      I agree. What are your thoughts on rock sliders?

    • @allan5721
      @allan5721 3 года назад +1

      @@TheNonnell For me it would depend on the sliders. Some look like just a black pipe, then others I’ve seen look like the belong on a “bro Jeep”. Then some of them look like a black version of the OE running boards.

      True. If I do sliders I’ll try to match the look I have with my Xterra.
