    LYRICS (FR)
    [Couplet 1]
    Hey !
    [Refrain]
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es
    Où t'es...
    [Pont]
    Hey !
    [Refrain]
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es, où t'es où, papaoutai ?
    Où t'es
    Où t'es...

The song is about the absence of a father, a story the singer himself experienced. Born of a Belgian mother and a Rwandan father, he had a fickle father, killed during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The singer confessed during an interview to have cried during the writing probably for the lived side.

Ben Leaper French is my native language and your comment is misleading, the singer has not mentioned war once in the song and the song is not about the effects of war but about the absence of fathers.

Something I find fascinating about the choreography of this video is the differences of the types of fathers and sons shown through their dance. In the first pair, the paperboys in pink uniforms, the father and son do a dance that relies heavily on partnership. A dance meant for two people to work and they help each other to pull it off. The second pair, the garbage collectors in orange, are perfectly in sync performing the same dance but separately. One person could do it solo but they're both a mirror of each other. They even do elegant ballet style leaps and turns that feel in direct contrast to the rigid robot style of the business men in the yellow and green suits. With the business man he's not dancing with his son or mirroring him, but trying to teach him and force him to do it his way even if the son is unhappy about it. But he still tries to have that connection with his father. The way the fluid ballet moves are cut in between the stiff pop and lock type moves are amazing and amplify the different ways of parenting via dance. But of course whether the sons are helping, mirroring, or learning from their fathers, they still have fathers who engage with them unlike the boy who is observing all these interactions. This is an amazing video. 💙🇫🇷 I want to learn french just to better appreciate stromae's videos but the language seems too difficult for me. 😞

Even the only female duo seem to have a particular feel to their dance, like the duality of beauty and strength in a woman. Their moves, similar to the garbage collectors, are also completely syncronized down to the outfits they wear, even walking dogs of the same breed. It's probably because the daughter is notably older than any of the sons -- most of the boys look from pre-teens to mid-teens, along with the subject of the song -- and thus has had the most time to grow up to be just like her mother.

@Sam2223eehhhhhdh nope, they won't have my full gratitude if they're bad. They always repeat the sentence "you're old, you know what's right or wrong" even though their sons aren't old just so that they can escape from responsibility, and then they wanna get treated like they're father of the year.

Its sadder if you know the story about his dad:
His dad went away when he was young, and he'd ask where his dad was and his mom would say "He's away on business." Things went on like this until he was 12 or so, when his mom told him the truth- His dad's father was having difficulties in his old age and needed help, so he returned back to his home country, Rwanda, in 1994. Stromae's father was killed in the genocide.

To be absolutely fair, a lot of songs have the same connotations lol
La Macarena is about a girl cheating on her boyfriend "Vitorino", while he was talking his oath as a conscript
      "Macarena has a boyfriend
He goes by the name of Vitorino
And while he took his oath of conscript
She was giving it to 2 friends"
Smooth criminal literally describes the murder of 2 people, presumably a couple.
      "He came into your apartment
      Left bloodstains on the carpet
Then you ran into the bedroom
      You were struck down
      It was your doom"
I don't care has a depressing bit about sometimes feeling okay, and sometimes not because nothing in life matters
      Run along, nothing to say
'Cause all along it never mattered anyway
Sometimes, I feel like I'm okay
Sometimes, I feel like I wanna run away

Actually (just for the fact), Stromae did had a father figure. He was killed in the Ruanda genocide, in 98 something like that, I could be wrong about the date. But yeah, that’s what happened to Stromae’s papa.

    • @phildragonbleu
      @phildragonbleu 4 years ago +52

@edmondvalmont1546 the genocide happened in 93 when he was 7-8. Stromae, growing up in Belgium, learned it in 97, but he confessed , in 2019, that his father figure was already dead to him before he was killed, since he almost never was here with him and had a lot of step siblings in Ruanda.

    • @PfoxMC
      @PfoxMC 5 years ago +70

I don’t think they’re trying to rub it in that he doesn’t have a dad, he’s just observing these father-son relationships and wishes to have his own. Because he doesn’t have a dad he has to pretend he is real by creating a “doll” that he imagined he dances with. I think the dancing represents fathers’/parents’ influence on determining children’s characteristics. For example, the dad and son dressed in suits you can see the son doesn’t want to listen to the dad and his dad shows frustration which eventually causes his son to start dancing like his dad. This is like a dad forcing a kid to go to college or join a certain career. But I don’t think they’re trying to flex their dads lol

@lavishlovergirl um... actually Stromae's dad was killed when he was 7 or 8 in the Rwanda genocide so... he flew to Belgium with his mother and grew up there, that's why he's saying "Où t'es papa où t'es ?" which means "Where are you daddy where are you ?"

Virus : I think that's partly the boy's perception of how things are: Because he is frustrated and upset about his father being absent, every parent-child pair he sees stands out to him, and acts a bit like salt in a fresh wound. Even if they're just going about doing normal things and not consciously noticing him, his anger and jealousy sees them as flaunting the connection and involvement they have with each other.
