  • If you buy an electrical item from China, you'll often find one of these in the box - ostensibly, it's a mains power plug converter, and they do actually work, but let's take a look at the quality of manufacture.
If you found this interesting, or maybe also if you didn't, you might like to check out BigClive's channel - / bigclivedotcom - if you do go there, perhaps you'd be kind enough to mention in a comment that Atomic Shrimp sent you.
If you want to read up on why the UK 3 pin plug might be the safest in the world, here's some info:

A term from one of my favourite ThouCylinder channels: Big Clive. He's fond of the random video, too.

A while ago I watched a RUclips series called "hidden killers in the [historical era] home". Where the first electric house lamps were discussed. They just had bare copper wire hanging from the ceiling to a lamp... combined with most people not knowing wtf electricity even was, people just straight up died from touching the wires accidentally.

UK plugs are very safe until you step on one in bare feet. :-(

Stepping on EU plugs also hurts. I think for this CEE plugs are the safest.

a cheap (and relatively safe) alternative to these for folks in the UK at least is the shaver adaptors. Most of these Chinese appliances use well under an amp, and the shaver adaptors (available for under a pound each and hold onto US/EU 2-pin plugs securely) have a 1A fuse in them. Much better than these things.

I've been using a death dapter for the last 4 years. I think I'll change it. Luckily I've had no accidents.

to be fair, I've seen some domestic plugs that have surprisingly little inner workings. All they really need is two or three clamps with wires attached to them.
Having said that, I'm in NO means an electrician, and I don't mess with anything that I'm not 100% sure won't kill me, and having a decent amount of trust in European safety specs, I'm sure our plugs have higher quality plastic, metal, wires and everything in them.

I have the pro version of the death adapter built into a 200w rechargable battery which the sine wave is 240volt but I live in the United States so my 120 volt device's tend to flicker and there is always a spark when plugging in.

The earlier version of this adaptor [looks identical] had all three pins screwed to the plates, which was okay. But with the later version [as here] the plug earth pin loses contact with the adaptor, if the plug is only slightly withdrawn from the adaptor.

There's another thing about these. The ones that look like they will pass the earth, to Schuko earth clips, or the top UK pin on a three pin deathdaptor - don't. Because it saves using any more metal. They pass the live and neutral only.

That’s the same adapter but China style us prongs that came with a European charger my friend got and I decided to trade it with one of my us Nintendo switch charger and ended up throwing the adapter away and buy a better adapter for it and yes I’m in the USA, but Japan also uses the same type of plugs except they use 100v not 120v

is it safe to use one of those Chinese adapters for Router on long run daily? If it's plugged properly, any risk of burning?

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 года назад +3

Most of the risk is probably associated with plugging them in and first switch-on. If you got past that and are still alive, and you have no further need to twiddle with it, and it's out of the reach of children, the risk level is reduced, but I personally prefer to buy an adaptor locally that I know has been made to adhere to some sort of standards

i have one that literally melted after i have my portable AC hook through it after couple of hours.
very very very doggy contacts, never never trust this and leave it unattended even with low power devices.

That is probably because the adapter did not have a fuse, learn about fuses on plugs.

I love UK plugs. I thought NZ ones were poor (they are….thin pins) until I visited America! As cheap as any Chinese plug design. They also have live sockets with no switch, terribly switches on lamps…
