I just saw a new interview w/Pat Metheny. Of course he's learned all the melody/harmony/rhythm, chords/scales/modes/arpeggios/notes, etc. He was saying knowing all that, and where every note is on the guitar, he shuts off all the patterns/scales, etc, and just puts notes in the song when he's improvising, never forgetting the melody, not even thinking like a guitarist. Freedom...
Very interesting, as I have experienced each of these phases. I agree with your final point - that you can't consciously quit a level - but you can leave it through distraction, or (as you say) by focusing on the music. Thanks for tackling a topic that gets little attention.
His direct and frank approach to ALL things is very impressive and transcends music. It can be applied to nearly all aspects of life. This guy is a philosopher.
Marty Schwartz on a milk carton... and now Steven Seagal placed above Coltrane and Wes.... Dani I love your playing but I'm convinced you're a comedic genius 🤣
Best thing to happen for me was getting a gig playing guitar in a theater performance. Getting on stage once or twice a day for months really made most anxiety disappear, Ive already fucked up in every way there is 😅 Now mostly mind wandering is the issue if it's music I'm not passionate about.
Dani, I've been ckng u in tube for 3 years consistently and identify very closely with your style and versatility as I also play/ stydy jazz, gypsy jazz, flemenco, JEFF BECK!, and more ... And this vid is one I've been wanting to drop for a looong ass time! We don't need more pentatonic lessons, we need more of the " zen factor" of the entire musicians game! I love your shit brother and support Israel freedom, DJT big league and common fucking sense! And love your free flow of language and speech...it flows... Love you my friend Phil Roberts NJ
This lesson was very eye opening for me. I have not performed music in front of others except for a few times...the first time I lost myself in the music and lost my place, then the next couple times I was in don't f*ck up mode...I guess I need to play with others more.
Dani I Love this and all you do and how you explain with your heart mond and sould just Epic Brother U Rock hoope all is well w the family miss you hope to see you again live soon brother you are the Best Live this!!
I feel like I'm almost always in "don't fuck up" territory even though I practice intensely. I've been working on improvising for close to 20 years now and I occasionally can tap into "the zone" but it's very random. I try to work on the "right things" with chord tones, chord scales, transcribing, and learning tunes but it's like the majority of things I work on just don't "stick" and my progress feels extremely slow despite how much time and effort I devote to getting better.
Dani's a fucking genius
You are one of the only people who really talks about what actually matters about playing improvised music.

Talking to my bandmates like an insecure girlfriend "you don't like that chord voicing? i guess you guys dont love me anymore"

It’s like he’s in my head. Subbed.
Love the dynamic explanation brother Epic!!
This is golden for me, thanks
Brilliant! Tell it as it is!
❤ This is truly helpful. Thank you!
So glad!
Good fucking video my friend. This can go to any musician honestly not just guitarists
This is great not only for musicians - it applies to life in general - thanks, mate!
Good rant! We need to be reminded of these things, even if we know them from the past. The humor helps!

Great advice!

"This is why people that want to not fuck up are always rushing."
This should be more prevalent knowledge among musicians.
Good stuff man
The driving analogy is great. I'll probably forget everything else you said but I think my smooth brain can remember that.

That was great!
Well said..
Practice simple meditation at home focusing on your breathing. If you do it regularly, you can call on it in a band situation and draw everything in.
This is great.
Yea sometimes i watch Steven Seagal clips and it inspires me to practice more and not end up like him 🎸🎸

Meta-cognition - a good topic in a variety of spheres (mindfulness for example).
Now I'm ready for meditation.

Enlightenment is enlightenment no matter what you’re doing.
Gotta have the balls to say fuck it and go for broke
Steven Seagalls presence implies a level 6 where you focus on “me wan da ponnani”
This is some good shit.
TM is the way out

Do they?
Had a bit of trouble concentrating after the fourth heading. Maybe that's your point. But yeah, nah.
Interesting …
in a fusion context, do you try to keep the chord notes in the beat when playing chromaticism?
That whole thing with chord tones on beats is an over simplification taught at jazz schools by people who couldn’t swing a sack of poop
@@marbinmusic lol, by the way, who is ronnie von
can u teach greg howe slide vibrato?
@@ic_1234 i can, but I don’t really use that sound much
@@marbinmusic yeah, more of a gimmick thingy to do hahah
@@ic_1234 used to listen to him all the time in high school. Early fav for sure.
Lmao Steve Seagal
It's crazy to me how much unconventional wisdom is within this short video. It's kind of a travesty much of this isn't widespread knowledge.
Ahh jazz is overrated, a lot of fancy scale names don't make the music sound better😂
