I just saw a new interview w/Pat Metheny. Of course he's learned all the melody/harmony/rhythm, chords/scales/modes/arpeggios/notes, etc. He was saying knowing all that, and where every note is on the guitar, he shuts off all the patterns/scales, etc, and just puts notes in the song when he's improvising, never forgetting the melody, not even thinking like a guitarist. Freedom...

Very interesting, as I have experienced each of these phases. I agree with your final point - that you can't consciously quit a level - but you can leave it through distraction, or (as you say) by focusing on the music. Thanks for tackling a topic that gets little attention.

Best thing to happen for me was getting a gig playing guitar in a theater performance. Getting on stage once or twice a day for months really made most anxiety disappear, Ive already fucked up in every way there is 😅
Now mostly mind wandering is the issue if it's music I'm not passionate about.

    Dani,
I've been ckng u in tube for 3 years consistently and identify very closely with your style and versatility as I also play/ stydy jazz, gypsy jazz, flemenco, JEFF BECK!, and more ...
And this vid is one I've been wanting to drop for a looong ass time!
We don't need more pentatonic lessons, we need more of the " zen factor" of the entire musicians game!
I love your shit brother and support Israel freedom, DJT big league and common fucking sense! And love your free flow of language and speech...it flows...

This lesson was very eye opening for me. I have not performed music in front of others except for a few times...the first time I lost myself in the music and lost my place, then the next couple times I was in don't f*ck up mode...I guess I need to play with others more.

I feel like I'm almost always in "don't fuck up" territory even though I practice intensely. I've been working on improvising for close to 20 years now and I occasionally can tap into "the zone" but it's very random. I try to work on the "right things" with chord tones, chord scales, transcribing, and learning tunes but it's like the majority of things I work on just don't "stick" and my progress feels extremely slow despite how much time and effort I devote to getting better.
