It´s more like the people living there got evicted. They had x amount of days to go there and get their stuff, but they probably didn´t have a place to go and take their stuff with them, so it all goes to trash containers. Sad story but common in California.
Some people here in the comments saying -- good job -- to Tarek, but it´s all done by the HGTV folks - even that designer is a plant, it has all been decided a lot earlier for each episode by HGTV exclusive contractors in the area. Most shows on HGTV have major fake zones - House Hunters don´t hunt for any houses, since the participants already put an offer on a house and are probably on escrow. Love or List it - same thing, the people hiring Hillary and David already made their decision, in some episodes the new house is already bought, and in other cases, two endings are taped, depending on the list of episodes on that day - they want some sort of even result. Then shows like this one and so many others, the hosts are just for show. In this show, Tarek does do some things for the purchasing of the house, but the contractors´ management and design - all done by HGTV teams. Maybe those teams give Christina some options to appear in front of the cameras as making decisions, but it´s all just for show. Regardless, Tarek and Christina did have some chemistry in the first seasons, then I think the pressure of the show plus Tarek´s cancer put too much stress on the couple... Tarek seems to have an alpha male personality and Christina can´t figure out what she wants - after Tarek, she got married to some English guy and got divorced a few months later, like what a mess... The houses are beautiful - but again, not sure how much of what we see is staging, how much is for real, so... HGTV always finds a way to fake it...
