I live for this show, everytime I see Josh's cute face I can feel a glimpse of hope blooming inside me. In this rotten world the JHS show is the last hope for a brighter future... please never stop.
My thought on the upper case P is that the vertical line of a lower case p would extend towards or off the bottom of the printable surface of the pedal. None of the other pedal names feature a letter which would go ‘below the line’ so it’s difficult to prove. If that is the case I guess they could have moved the entire name up but then that would look odd if you lined them up together. Just a theory!
I prefer the format with the whole gang as they often ask great questions of Josh that may not get answered normally. However, I imagine those are a lot more difficult to pull off. This format is still great though.
RE: The G String: According to Roger Mayer talking about Jimi Hendrix - "First of all, we weren't using a flat-radius fretboard," Mayer says. "We were using the normal one, not the very high radius but definitely curvy. The actual strings we used were not what people would expect. The string gauges would run .010, .013, .015, .026, .032 and .038. The big difference there is that you're using the .015 for the third, because if you use the .017 for the third, the actual sound of the guitar is very G-heavy. The electrical output of the strings is dependent on the square of the diameter; if you square all the diameters and look at them, you can get much more of an idea about the balance of the guitar. You should always remember that, because many, many times people use a set of strings that are completely imbalanced and they just don't sound that good. Most people would say a .010 to .013 is the correct jump. And the .015 is much better for the G than a .017. An .015 squares out at .225 and .017 is 289. So you're going to get 28 percent more output just with a two-pound different in string size." www.guitarworld.com/features/secrets-of-jimi-hendrixs-guitar-setup-roger-mayer-interview
I will heartily admit, that I didn’t believe that these were actually based on anything from the brands’ past. And I’m an Orange guy. I was wrong… Cool episode. Thanks Josh.
In case anyone's interested, Kent is the south-eastern most county in the UK, and Bellegrove Road is in a town called Welling. That area is the northernmost part of Kent, and is basically the same stomping ground that The Stones came from.
Really enjoyed this! Please do more. Only thing I would really really like to hear you jam w/ the drum thinger with all three Orange pedals connected together and on. They seem like they would probably sound fantastic together especially with the gain turned up on the distortion like by you had it. A short maybe please? Love the show. I’m turning into a pedal nut and it’s all your(not completely true) fault, thank you! (Got my JHS 3series delay and waza blues driver today from Sweetwater, very excited)
Absolutely love and appreciate the videos! Your love of pedals gives the most objective reviews and info. You guys have really changed my view on pedal effects. Tired of the snobby pedal makers only talking about their products. Makes me appreciate the "Shameless Plugs" lol. Thanks!
Nice run down. Don't believe these pedals will give me anything different from other manufacturers, but good to see companies bringing back vintage designs for those who want them. The Upper case P on the Phaser looked necessary as a lower case p(see how it goes down but at the bottom of the case you have no where to go) may have not fit well on the botom of the pedal.
yeah, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Plus, if they tried to move the lettering up to accommodate the lowercase p, they would be cut off by the footswitch. Also, I can't be the only one who noticed that the new Phazer is spelled with an s, but the old "Phazer" was spelled with a z!
Interesting pedals with a great backstory (and thank you for that Josh!) that are only marred by a ridiculously inflated price tag. I mean seriously, $249? But I suppose nostalgia never comes cheap.
Remember the ol' learning to print in elementary school 3 line paper? The "P" is capitalized because a lower case P would cause the whole word to be raised up from the line of the enclosure bottom. That old dharmasound reminds me of the Daredevil Cocked and Fearless. 🤘👍
The "P" is capitolized because it is the only letter that would span below all the others, so if it were "phaser" it would need more space below and the font is very close to the bottom of the pedal as is.
Thanks! This was very interesting to watch. I really appreciate your input on all things pedals. These pedals though - the price is way too steep for me to justify buying them when there are so many great options around that cost way less.
Yeah, it looks like the Capital P is because the baseline of the word aligns with the pedal bottom. A lowercase p would have a descender that extends below the bottom of the pedal. Or otherwise the whole word "phaser" would need to sit above the bottom of the pedal to make room for it. Perhaps they should have just capitalized all three words so it didn't stand out though.
Forget the capital P vs lower case, I think everyone needs to freak out because phaser is spelled with an "s" in the reissue and in the original ad it's spelled with a "z" .... "phazer". Let the freak out commence.
Funny you mention mastering in regards to the sustain pedal: when he's not the lead designer for Orange, Adrian emsley is a mastering engineer. He remastered the entire iron maiden catalogue, for example. So if you're wondering why Orange products are so well thought out or have a bit of a studio nerd slant to them or why they make some things you would not expect, there you go.
My guitar's G string stays in tune for a few reasons. This is on my Fender Thinline Jaguar. I have Mastery bridge and vibrato installed on it, it already has a straight/string pull AND it also has Graph Tech's Ratio tuners. Less tension on the strings because it has a 24" scale length kinda helps keep that G string in tune, at least for me.
The descender part of the "p" would fall off the bottom of the pedal if it were lower case. Kinda of a bummer because those pedals are cool, but it's only noticeable if you have all 3.
Yes, the font issue bothers me a little. However, as with a lot of stuff in this Universe, I am going to have to let it go. That guitar seems pretty great. Thank you for mentioning the cable hanging out of the output jack on the sustainer. It was also bothering me. I'm not sure I could have gotten past that as easily as the font discrepancy.
Graphic designer here.. The P is capital because there is no room for the descender of the P to extend below the baseline of the type. But if it were me, I would have just made all the first letters capitalized. Sure that's not in-line with the "orange" logo being all lowercase, but I think it would make the line feel more consistent than what they did. It would be a valid excuse if they were repeating a mistake in homage to the original pedals. But they weren't. The original was "phazer" lowercase with a Z instead of an S.
the P is upper case so there isn't a descender with a lower case p that would be below the edge of the pedal since there is already limited space between the edge and the switch button.
as to the font "issue", would you rather it has a lower case P and thus the whole word would shift up and be different than the others or would you rather have the names all on the same leverl but have to have a capital P to make that work? I personally prefer the capital P. and Josh, thanks for demoing these pedals, always appreciate you showing us stuff we may not have or may not have the ability to play ourselves. whatever anyone else says, to me, you are a mensch.
The format's great, and I like these demonstrations-slash-history lessons. However, I *must* correct your pickup naming. Firstly, those are not 'dogears'. Dogears have triangular tags on the short sides, secured by one screw at each end; the pickups you have there are jazzmasters, or at least the jazzmaster form factor, with four screws placed two per long side. Secondly, That neck pickup is not a P-90. What you have there-yup, I did go track down Paragram's posts on that guitar and found the exact pickup models-is a Righteous Sound 1991 Gazing set, which I happen to already be familiar with. This set comprises of a standard jazzmaster single coil at the neck and a hugely offset humbucker in the bridge. P-90s have one wide coil and two bar magnets, placed at the bottom of the pickup, with steel bolts in the middle; jazzmaster single coil pickups have one wide coil, similar to a P-90 though not quite as full, and they use six individual magnetic pole pieces, like Strat and Tele pickups do. This affects the sound significantly in comparison to a P-90's bottom bar magnets, especially the lower-mids and note attack. In pedal terms, mixing up these two types of pickup is like saying a BD-2 is a TS-9. The bridge pickup's coils are mismatched so significantly that the pickup is only-just humbucking, similar to many firebird pickups; you didn't get anything wrong here, just thought I'd complete the info. (But this is a nice segue to another mistake you've often made; the pickups in your main BILT do not seem to be minihumbuckers, as you've often said, but are almost certainly firebird pickups, which are a totally different construction internally and almost polar-opposite sound. Again, in pedal terms this is similar to mixing up an SD-1 with a DS-1.) I know you've said before that you're not interested in pickups and will or can make them all sound the same, but if you can remember all these different pedals, if you value being able to identify all these circuits, and if you know Fender's tremolo and vibrato are actually vibrato and tremolo, then I think you can also understand both the different form factors of pickups and why conveying the correct information is important. Yes this has been bugging me for some time, no I am not usually one of those commentors, but there we have it. Keep up the good work. P.S. I actually use your Haunting Mids to make jazzmasters sound more like a P-90, and firebirds like standard humbuckers, via the same setting. Set the level a little lower than unity, set the Q to Lo, sweep around 10 o'clock, and mids up to about 3 o'clock. It can't change the note attack of course, but it does make the tone balance match.
Hey Josh, Why don't you set up a side chain Gate in your audio setup for your talk mic? every time you play the gtr, the gate gets signaled to turn off your talk mic.. let me know if this makes sense? #BeastRecordings
The P in phaser is capitalized because a lower case p would bleed off the enclosure…no room for the lower case one! It wouldn’t bother me after thinking about the design challenge.
Could you PLEASE do a video reviewing the other Orange pedals, like the Fur Coat Fuzz and the Getaway Driver, and so on? They seem quality and unique, but we'd love to hear your opinions.

Hey -- I am very interested in drum machines for practice / compossing --- Have you done an episode which covers such pedals / drum machines? -- I'd love to know more
Always got the g string to stay in tune. I overtune half a step, shake each string from the nut down goes out of tune repeat until it stops, then I use pencil lead in the slots. Your welcome
FYI. The Shure SM7 microphone sounds better. You should get another one of those for your office. I know it’s not white…but it sounds better for your voice.

Josh, that intro was cool. You coaxed some really nice tones out of that box.
My thought on the upper case P is that the vertical line of a lower case p would extend towards or off the bottom of the printable surface of the pedal.
