I understand why they use these old machines, but given their skill level what I don't understand is why they don't keep the machine tools in better shape.
They simply make do with what they have because the shop owner is either too frugal or machinist supplies cost more than would be feasible to purchase given what they are paid for such jobs

I have news for you.. The lathe has been around much, much longer than just "100 years". In fact, lathe work goes back so far that family names like "Turner" are rather common.

With all the cheap labor available you would think the place would at least be as clean as workshops in other countries. They are assembling gearboxes on dirt floors and fans blowing dust everywhere. I know it is a poor country but clean machine shop practice costs nothing. I won't even go near the topic of safe work practice. Even when that shaft was running on the live center it should still have had the support roller frame installed.

Very little regard given for human safety or life itself in these countries , if a person is killed or maimed another person replaces them and life goes on as if nothing happened!
Dropping that chunk of metal on the shaft has to be one of the most asinine things I have seen. Could very easily sheer one of the teeth off as it smashes down and falls to the side.

Gives a whole new meaning to the term 'precision engineering'
🤣
I really enjoy watching skilled people making high quality parts on machines that would be considered obsolete in the USA!

They don’t have a basic understanding of their own safety , so looking after a machine wouldn’t enter their heads.

The skill level required to make that keyway with a planer is just incredibly high. I could never do it and I had 45 years manual machinist.
