Painting clouds using the dry brush technique

- Опубликовано: 14 ноя 2019
- Painting clouds becomes a lot easier when you use the dry brush technique. This means you don't have to thin your paint down with medium. Dutch artist Janhendrik Dolsma often applies this technique in certain stages of his paintings. He shows how in his oil painting 'Beach Pole'.
Dolsma (1950) is an expert painter of clouds, beaches, dunes and of course the ocean. On his RUclips channel he shares a lifetime of painting experience in short tutorial videos with an emphasis on painting clouds. His full length tutorials (over 60 minutes) have found their way to buyers all over the world. Full tutorials can be found here: www.paintingskies.com/video/
Dolsma participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, Spain, Belgium and the USA.

Your work has truly inspired me on my own journey. I’ve only been painting about 2 years, but I can tell it’s clear to me where I want to go with my own style. We are cat people here at my house, it was very touching seeing your last goodbye clip. Thank you
That's great to hear! If you keep putting in the hours, you'll be amazed about the progress you make.
After dear Alphonse passed, we decided we weren't going to get another cat. Now we have two...
Stunning video and a sad farewell to Alphonse. Thank you for sharing your skills and talent with us 🙂🙂
Thanks, Paul. Ah yes, dear Alphonse... Fortunately we have two new cats.
I actually shed a tear at the end. RIP Alphonse.
Yeah, still miss him. Nervous little bugger...
Thank you. You are a patient and peaceful professor.
Thank you, Christina!
rest in peace Alphonse in the fluffiest clouds your master ever painted 😥🐈☁️
Sorry for the late response, Dan. I just discovered that, for some reason, your comment was held back. Thank you for your kind words for Alphonse. Still miss him...
Sorry about your loss. He was a beautiful kitty. Your videos inspire me to tackle large skies. Thank you so much for sharing! Blessings to you.
He was a beautiful kitty indeed. Miss him.
So good to find you here!! I just started painting! Inspired by clouds and see in the Netherlands and you! Thankful and happy!

Thanks, Michelle. Silly cat. Walked in one day and never left. Good to hear you enjoy my videos.
Thank you for the fantastic video! Losing a pet is very hard, they are definitely a valuable member of your family. I will miss seeing him in the videos. He was very special and unique.
Thanks, Marcia. Miss him too.
Your paintings are amazing, I always look forward to seeing your beautiful work....
Thank you so much, Nazima!
Your voice is so soothing. Your paintings speak.
Good to hear. A comment from the US said I had a 'charming accent'.
Amazing Janhendrik.
So gracious with your experience.
I enjoy doing these videos. I get a lot in return.
There is no word to appreciate his painting. Really beautiful and fantastic painting. I am really impressed #Masoodartgalley
Love your channel and all you do! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
Just beautiful! ❤️ Thank you for sharing with us, your amazing work !
Thank you. So glad to hear you enjoy my work!
You are welcome sir !
Masterpeace as always! Truly amazing and peaceful
Thank you, Sandy!
So amazing and masterful! Thank you so much for sharing with us! How lucky we are to be able to see you create this beautiful art!
I thought it was especially interesting how you kept the highlights warm, to push them forward, and the shadows cooler, to recede. I will need to remember that technique, very useful!
Yes, it's a very useful technique indeed. Warm colors in the foreground, cooler colors receding into the background. In clouds, as well as in the landscape.
Whilst proficient in many art forms I have never had cause to paint clouds seriously till now and only due to a particular commission. They really are not easy but we are always learning and your video is most useful. As always, practice practice practice, I currently have a studio full of clouds !
From a professional artist of more than 40 years I thank you.
Great to hear my video has been useful, even more so coming from a fellow artist. I agree with you: practice is of the utmost importance. Hope your commission went well.
What a talent! Bravo!
Thank you, Wren!
Best photo editing tutorial. It´s beautiful.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻 so valuable
Thank you. Really pleased to hear the video has been helpful!
Thank you for sharing this technic with others 😊
My pleasure, Christine!
That is thumb beautiful painting 😉
I love the scale of the piece
Thank you. Love the word play.
Stunning art, stunning painting, you are amazing and your skill extraordinary. Hope the many happy memories you would have of Alphonse bring you many smiles, mixed with the sadness of losing your special companion
Thank you for your kind words. When I began painting in the morning Alphonse always jumped on the studio chair and fell asleep. Silly little things, that I hardly noticed when he was still alive...
Stunning!!
Thanks, Marie!
Lovely work
Thank you, Rhonda!
Nice tutorial on this technique, good sir.. I work with acrylics and do a similar thing scrubbing in lighter layers of highlights over the midtones and shadows, but it's neat to see you do this in oil and with your thumb. Most importantly, I'm sorry for your feline loss.. may Alphonse rest in peace.
Thank you. Yes, the dry brush works great in acrylics as well. Or in tempera for that matter. The great American painter Andrew Wyeth was a master at it. Thanks for your compassion with regard to Alphonse. I'm sure he rests in peace.
Love the video, love the painting. So sad to hear about Alphonse. I wish you well, and thank you for sharing all that you share in your videos.
Alphonse was my sidekick in quite a few videos. Thought I'd mention him one last time. Glad you love the new video!
Another great video! I am learning so much from you!!!...thank you thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Thanks, Lesley. I get a lot out of it too!
Spectacular! You are truly one of the few great artists of our time. I’ve been looking at your work online and your videos for a few years now. Thank you for doing them because I learn so much watching you. I have yet to find an artist who paints more realistic clouds than you do. You’re incredible! Thank you for sharing. So sorry to hear about Alphonse 😢
Thank you so much, Lydia. Good to hear my videos have been useful! Still getting used Alphonse not being around...
Janhendrik Dolsma your videos are better any course I could take and so inspiring to see your beautiful work. As for Alphonse, he was special and it takes time or maybe getting another cat friend 😉

@@SharonNewman-dd6gq Great work.
Greatly appreciate your videos and I am sorry to hear about Alphonse. My cats Ive been blessed with in my life have been of the greatest gifts to me. I hope to see more videos in the future. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your experiences with cats. I can totally relate to that. I have no plans to make another fulltime video in the near future. I'm to busy painting at the moment. Will keep you posted through RUclips. Thanks again!
Love the thick paint on the clouds. I like to paint thick too.
Works great, eh? I use it mainly in the last stages of a painting, to apply the highlights.
Thank you for your pleasant and informative video. I have started a seascape and I need all the help I can get! Merci !
Glad to be of help, Robert! For my full length tutorials go to www.paintngskies.com/video.

Very helpful! Hopefully with practice I can reach this level
Good to hear the video has been helpful. If you want to get a better painter, my advice would be to make the hours!
Learned so much, dankjewel. The colors are so beautiful. Rest in peace cat, lost mine in the same year
Good to hear the video has been helpful. Yes, loosing a cat can be tough. We now have two new ones. Hope you found a new feline companion too.
This painting is phenomenal. I wish I could own it
Thank you, Jay! The painting is sold though...
Very informative.. thanks you

Thank you very much for this video I must try this...

Good to hear the video has been helpful. Success!
I think I just went on a weeks vacation for free... I’m so relaxed.. .. catatonic ..
Beautiful painting. I love those clouds. How said to say goodbye to Alphonse. Our kitties become like our children. They follow us everywhere, and always ready to help us mix the paints and lick the brushes! I will sorely miss my Misty when she has to leave one day. I'm sorry your Alphonse had to leave, a really beautiful kitty, so sad.
It was sad indeed. Hope you get to enjoy Misty's company for a long time!
This was very satisfying and amazing 🥰👍👍👍🌻🌺
Thank you, Vanilla, that's great!
Greatly professional

Fantastic…. I’ve sent this to my friend

Beautiful
Thank you, Suresh!
Well done
Thank you, Celine!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful skills and talent.
What was that wonderful music?
Thank you, Andrew. The music is a piece called 'Let's talk about Larry'. I made it as a tribute to Larry Graham, one of my favorite bass players. I stripped the vocals and left out the end (which has a rather different atmosphere). Glad to hear you like it.
I love to paint the dunes, the beach and the sky and sunsets. I was born in Holland in Beverwijk, 3 km from the beach in Wijk San Zee, I wonder if you live close to a beach, because your paintings are so real and so beautiful, I'm still learning and truly get a lot out of your videos. Thank you so much and keep the videos coming, I love them and the way you teach.

Hi Johanna, thank you for your kind comments. I know Wijk aan Zee, we sometimes went there for the summer holidays when I was a kid. Nice memories...

Beautiful painting, I’m learning a lot from you. I’m sorry to say goodbye to sweet kitty!
Thank you, good to hear my videos have bee helpful. Still think about dear Alphonse every now and then. We got 2 new cats that are totally different, but equally enjoyable.
Very nicely done ✅
Thank you!
Amazing 😍
Very kind, Bodil.
Amazing piece of work Jan. What blues did you use for the sky colour? They are so vibrant.
Thanks Bobby. I use a mixture of Kings Blue Light, Scheveningen Blue (an Old Holland colour) and Titanium White.
As always, beautiful. Can you tell me where you get your fan brushes? I’ve tried a number of them from different places but none really good and soft for blending. Thank you for sharing!
I bought mine at my local retailer. You could try your luck online. The brand is Vincent.
Thank you
You're very welcome, Susan.
Very interesting technique! Have a lovely Sunday! Elly
Thanks, Elly!
so instead of darken some aréas you lignt the opposite zone , i'm going to try this ,i'm in love with skies , too ;)
I often use the warm-cold contrast between the high lights and the shadows of a cloud. You don't have to use heavy light-dark contrasts to get a similar result. Success!
There is no word to appreciate his painting. Really beautiful and fantastic painting. I am really impressed #Masoodartgalley
Bellissimo!!!🌹🌹🌹
Grazie mille!
This one is my fave of all of your wonderful videos . Does your paid hour long version elaborate on the reasoning behind what you're doing in the " Beach Pole" video ?
Thank you, Peter. Unfortunately, there is no paid hour long version of this one. On my Painting Storm Clouds video though, I also explain the dry brush technique. You can download it at www.paintngskies.com/video.
Получила удовольствие от видео)
Приятно слышать. Спасибо.

Love your videos. Can I apply your techniques to acrylics? Any tips?
Thanks! I'm not an expert when it comes to acrylics, but I've been told it's possible. I wrote an article why I prefer oils on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2016/08/oils-and-acrylics.html.
If you find the time you could read the comment on the article of an acrylic painter (Gayle) with lots of tips to apply the glazing technique with acrylics.
Love your sky's! I love painting sky's, do you ever get tired of doing them?
Thank you, Bud. No, up till now I never got tired of doing sky's. I'm always trying to find new ways to paint them.
Maravilhoso, lindo, perfeito !!!!!?👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Brasil
Muito obrigado, Dioné!
Duimen zijn uitstekend om wolken te schilderen ...👍👍
Onmisbaar. :)
This is amazing! Also I would like to know if this is an acrylic painting or oil painting.
Thank you! It's an oil painting. I sometimes forget to mention it, probably because I work exclusively in oils. Better next time.
Wow. Impresive. How did you get this good.
Thank you, Patrick! Mostly it's putting in the hours :)
Oh And I forgot to mention I love your voice
That's very kind, Irene. Thank you.
Very nice fine
Thanks, Rahul!
Quick question! Do you wait the sky to dry before applying the first cloud layer or do you do it wet on wet? Danke je wel!
Yes, in this case I let it dry before doing the cloud layer. I use a fast drying medium (Liquin Light Gel), so that doesn't take more than a day. For more on my painting technique: www.paintingskies.com/video.
Très beau ! Est-ce à l'huile ou à l'acrylique ?
Avec mes remerciements
Merci beaucoup, Annie! C'est a l'huile.
ARE ANY OF YOUR PAINTINGS FOR SALE? I’m obsessed with the sky and you do it best.
Thank you for your kind words. If you have a serious interest in purchasing one of my paintings, please write me an e-mail at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl and we'll take it from there!
The Dolsma Thumb blending brush. Not available in stores. :)
:)) Luckily you got one of your own!
Harikaaa superrrr👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you!!
What colours do you for your sand? Love your videos .
Thanks, Suzi. The basic sand color in this painting is Flesh color (Lukas), mixed with a little van Dycke's brown (Rembrandt), Mars yellow (Old Holland) and finally Burnt Sienna (Rembrandt).
Thank you for the tip, I’ll try it next time.
Отлично получилось
Спасибо!
Oh my word
Thanks, Lewis!
I enjoyed your video very much. My great great uncle was Paul Bodifee ( have you heard of him ? ) - I try to interpret his style in my own paintings.
Good to hear you enjoyed the video. I googled your great great uncle and I was happily surprised. I really love his work. A lot of my favorite painters are Dutch 19th century artists, but I didn't know him. Thanks for the tip!
is the bottom layer still wet when clouds applied?
No, it's dry. The bottom layer somehow always shimmers through the top layers (at least it does when you're using transparant layers like I do). This helps create the feeling that the clouds are really in front of the blue sky. I sometimes paint the clouds in a wet on wet in a blue sky, mostly in my oil on paper sketches.
Do you list the paint colors anywhere. ? Love the class I purchased from you as well. Sorry about your loss. So sad.
Thank you for your condolences. Please send me an email at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl and I will send you the list of the colors I use.
👏👏
Thank you, Siul!
I am using acrylic paints and the canvas is dried, do you have a video to add clouds after the canvas has dried?
In my Painting Clouds for Beginners video (ruclips.net/video/moq5H1eaIzA/видео.html) I do the entire blue of the sky first and only after it's dry I paint the clouds. Check out my website for the long version of this video (www.paintingskies.com/video). Hope this answers your question!
What’s the name of the light gel a fast drying ?
That's Liquin Light Gel from Winsor & Newton. Great stuff.
How do you deal with the liquin harmful fumes ?
Ventilation. During the summer I'm even working with the doors and windows open. Still, you can't exclude all risks. Painting has always been a tricky profession in that respect...
Why do you have to make me cry at the end? :(
Didn't mean to, Fuz. But, on a happier note, about a month ago a new kitten moved in. Will post a new video shortly (painting waves) that also includes footage of her.
(4:11) This looks very contemporary. Maybe that's a swear word for you, but could be an interesting path to explore. The flat beach, and sea with high rising clouds. Visible contrast and I prefer this.
Thanks for your comment. There is a certain beauty in the sober composition at 4:11 and it's more contemporary (not a swearword for me, by the way), I agree. But in the end I'm drawn to making a realistic painting, that's where my heart is...
Oh, I’m so sorry for the loss of your Alphonse. 😭
Thanks, Leora. Still hear him, occasionally. Silly cat...
Janhendrik Dolsma No kitty could ever replace Alphonse. But maybe there is another kitty who is sad and without a home, at the moment, to whom you could give a lovely, happy home and life.
We discussed getting a new cat, but it's still undecided...
Fantastic painting. Can i apply your technique using acrylics?
Thank you! The dry brush technique can also be used with acrylics. The glazing technique (which I also use a lot) is more problematic with acrylics. I wrote an article about it on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2016/08/oils-and-acrylics.html.
If you find the time you could read the comment on the article of an acrylic painter (Gayle) with lots of tips to apply the glazing technique with acrylics.
@@PaintingSkies1 thank you so much
I sort of use dry brush technique myself in pleners and my works where i want to express feelings/memories in one attempt, where i almost dont use turpentine or very few. Howeever what bothers me is that those paintings even after having surface dried keep the smell of paints, even after months. It is not a strong scent but when keeping few of those paintings in locked room makes it very noticable after entering the room. How does it work with your paitnings where you used dry brush technique? i mean, do the smell of the paint remains for a long time even if its dried?I sort of put the paint in impasto aswell, not everywehre but still...
Yes, that's pretty annoying. I only use undiluted paint in a few areas in a painting, so I can't say I have met this problem. If your entire canvas is covered with impasto paint, that's a different story though. Oil paint takes a long time to dry, up to a year, so my guess is that the smell will remain that long. Maybe you should try acrylics for your impasto work. It dries really quick and doesn't smell as much as oil paint.
@@PaintingSkies1 i use oils specificly for its longer drying time, i mean, acryl dries too fast for me so i cant use it the way id like to, oils are more suitable for me. my teacher told me today that it is possible that some of the scent together with a bit of humidity settled in the back side of the canvas because i kept my works in basemant after painting was done, so it didnt have the proper airing.. i will see how it will work with my next painting with proper airing and drying, maybe it will help. or ill wait one year :) or try to add just a bit of turpentine to each of colors, but not too much. so many things to learn.. :) have a good day.
@@GoreTheSummoner Yes, in that case acrylics are no alternative. I'm not sure turpentine will help either. It has quite a strong smell itself. Your teachers advice seems sound. Hope it works!
Excuse my Ignorance Maestro, what do you use for the sketch charcoal graphite ink?
I always use graphite, though back in art school I learned to use charcoal. Graphite is supposed to interact with oil paint. I must say I never noticed, but if you want to be on the safe side you should use charcoal.
Beautifully done! Thanks for sharing your process - question, seems that you’re not concerned about fat over lean? Maybe I misunderstood but when doing the clouds you didn’t have medium in that layer but previous layer did have liquin, that is lean over fat - won’t that be a problem later on? Also sorry to hear about your cat, very tough to lose a pet.
Good to hear you like the painting. The fat over lean rule doesn't apply when working with Liquin. I did a short article about it on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2016/02/the-fat-over-lean-rule.html. Hope this helps!
