I have just went through this on a QNAP 2 drive bay NAS over the last few days....first drive had reported SMART Errors, so bought a replacement and replaced drive....rebuilding took place, but next day after rebuild the other disk completely failed.....so out of interest put the disk with SMART Errors back in and let it rebuild & Test and it now showed no SMART Errors......will be buying another replacement disk on stand by....the original WD RED Plus disks were purchased 3 years ago and they failed just after warranty expires...strange....😉

Did you say RAID 2? What is that?

Hello, good morning I speak from Brazil. I have a doubt. I have a QNAP TS-h973ax server with QuTS Hero OS and I have 4 Seagate Iron Wolf Pro hard drives. 1 of 12TB, 2 of 10TB and 1 of 20TB. They are working on RAID 0. I couldn't find the "one by one" disk replacement option. My 2 10TB disks are having a sector reallocation problem, according to the DA (Drive Analyzer) app. I need to remove them and I don't know how to do this. I've already tried it and simply the RAID has an error and I can't mount it afterwards. Could you help me, please? Thanks.

    Hello,
I have following problem with my qnap ts-253 Pro, This after placing a larger Hdd and reinstallation, In local network I can open or copy files to my PC so this works normally. As for my samsung tablet i can open mp3 and mp4 and in contrast i can't open or copy any pdf or jpg files. An error message is given: "Failed to download"
I have tried everything, user access rights settings are set.
What could be the problem here.
The nas has 2 bays on installing i had problems with the 2é bay.
So I Now there is only a hdd in Bay 1 (I don’t think this can cause the problem I have)
    Thanks, Marc.

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time with the idea of a RAID'd disk not being considered a "backup". It kind of is, its an extra disk with mirrored data, aka a backup. I understand the safety net point, but technically - it is a backup... otherwise - whats the point?

Isn't it better to just use LizardFS?

What happens if you get a URE when rebuilding this? Aren't the chances quite high when rebuilding this?

watch thiojoe's video from 5 years ago. you lose the whole array due to the overall damage being 2 disk failures on RAID 5. that's why he said use RAID 6. RAID 5 is no longer recommended.

Hello Mike, thanks for the explanations they were very valuable. I'm already backing up my data and will recreate the RAID as you emphasized. Thank you very much.

In case of hardware failure, you can transfer your drives from your old QNAP NAS (source) to your new QNAP NAS (destination) if both NAS models and their firmware are compatible. Check out the Qnap support page for "If the NAS hardware fails, can I transfer my drives to a replacement NAS and still keep my data?"
