The power down is a safety feature to protect the VCR in response to a general hardware fault. Try replacing the belts (buy a bag of rubberbands of assorted sizes and match the ones you need, just a little bit shorter). If that doesn't fix it, grease your gears and mechanisms. 90% of the time, power down on loading a tape is belt-related.
Hello Joe, I have the same model machine and the same exact problem. The problem has gradually gotten worse. About a year ago I took my machine to a vcr repair shop and the technician cleaned the "mode" switch and the problem went away, for awhile. Now the problem is happening again. I have no idea what or where the mode switch is. i will be taking it back next week. I will let you know what happens. I like this machine alot, can't afford a new one they are over $200 new.
Thanks for all who continue to write over the last year. I have not had the problem solved since then. There is a pulley on the right side with a belt that looks like it is struggling to do it's job, the belt is fine. from there it goes underneath the chassis, that is all. I have not had time to rip it apart primarily because once I do that I find extra parts that seem to not fit together when I assemble back. I have been using another VCR to transfer tapes to DVD. I thank you for all your writing. It seem like Magnavox has an issue from the many replies. TAKE NOTE: If you associated with that company to develop a fix.
I have an older model that only plays vhs but my problem is when I try to play a tape it plays but there is no sound or video except if I have the menu on, then I have only sound. Do u think I should try to fix it or throw it away?
