    Here's a video review of GORF ("Galactic Orbiting Robot Force") by Bally/Midway. This game was released in 1981 and contains elements of Space Invaders and Galaxian. It's essentially four games in one. It's a pretty neat cabinet! The joystick in this game was designed by famed pinball and video game designer George Gomez. It is the same joystick that you will find on Tron, Discs of Tron, and Satan's Hollow. This video was filmed at the Flux Capacitor Arcade in suburban Chicago.

    You said it was from an arcade in the south suburbs of Chicago. Two possibilities...Wright's Barnyard in Lansing, IL and Number 1 Fun in Homewood, IL. Crazy that this could be the exact GORF that I played back in the early 1980's!

    GORF is awesome! Played this in the arcades many moons ago, I'm still rocking GORF on MAME. I liked how you had two ways of firing, all on the same trigger. A single slow long range laser shot that could reach the top of the screen. And fast multiple short range laser shots (by pressing the fire trigger quickly) for when the GORF are swarming upon your ship ;)

    I used to love Gorf as a teen. I recall some places didn't ground the cabinet right, or something, and you'd get little electric shocks from the metal front panel if you held
    your hands there while playing. Creepy!

    Just so you know, I removed the red transistor from the neck board and let the game run for an hour. It never turned red. It's not the tube!

    As far as the red, I once saw someone with that problem and it turned out to be one of the adjustment pots causing the issue. Sometimes when you would just touch the pot the problem would correct itself. Worth a shot if you haven't tried that already.

    iv been fixing my gorf and its the same with the background sounds missing and the lazer on the second level. first thing to check is swapping the speaker wires i think. its a great machine. LONG LIVE GORF!

    these type of transistors are two lead units where the case forms one of the connections. there is usually an insulating pad under the transistor to isolate it from the frame and one of the mounting nuts will have a tag connecting it to the PCB.

    GORF is a very fun game. I honestly wouldn't have searched this one out, but I went to buy a Gravitar from a guy and he had several other games that weren't listed yet but that he would be selling. So, I ended up getting Gravitar, GORF, and Frogger from him. Gravitar is in the restoration queue, Frogger didn't need much, and that GORF just needed cleaning, new t-molding, and one piece of the formica-like side had started to peel back so I had to glue & clamp it back into place.

    I remember playing this when it first came out.. Depending on the machine, I could make it all the way past Space Avenger.. PLUS, I've seen guys take out the Flagship with only two shots (one at the barrier, the other well-placed at the core.. Yes, it is possible!)

  • @Johnsarcade

    I swapped neck boards and it was still red! The pots are on the neck board. Thanks for the idea, though!

    I fixed the missing sounds on my Gorf, which is the one shown in this video. The audio PCB was the problem, the small board with the 2 volume pots and switch located behind the coin door. Now all sounds are present.

  • @TheMadmagik

    Yup exactly, those 4 transistors on the frame are the X-Y control . It will be a dry joint on one of them probably.

    I figured it did. I always equated Bally/Midway with seeing both companies' names together as such, like on Tapper. Ah well. Gorf remains one of my favorite games, and it's a shame it will never appear on emulation packages, so the only genuine way to enjoy it is in arcade format.

    Hi Jon, your red issue will be a short circuit in the red section on the main part of the chassis, if the issue was in the neck card then you'd see flyback lines at the same time and from your vid you don't have that so it's in the initial colour amplification stage pre-drive. Check the red input from the video connector onwards starting there as something will be causing it to not shut off. If you've already swapped the transistors in the circuit it's a short or a crack in the PCB.

    I almost got a Gorf last year. I got my Tapper when the deal fell through. I do believe, though, that Midway hadn't gotten to the Bally/Midway state yet when they put out Gorf. The marquee simply reads Midway, and I believe so does the title screen.

  • @Johnsarcade

    I tested it and compared it to one from another chassis. Got same results on both. No resistance in one direction and a reading in the other. This monitor usually worked normally when I turned it on and then it would turn red. Maybe it was failing when it got hot?

  • @Johnsarcade
    @Johnsarcade  11 лет назад

    I already replaced Q203-208 and Q401-Q405. I'll look a that diode!

  • @flyguille
    @flyguille 9 лет назад

    looks, video rgb is HIGHER voltage -> TOP INTENSITY, ZERO or near ZERO = black, so, if some of the R G B signals is interrupted, it won't lights that channel. So, the problem is more in the RGB output amplifier, it sounds like the R transistor lacks the 200v video +B, when that voltaje fails, the cathod of the tube lights. Normally, there is one big wattage resistence that normally turns hot, one for each channel, from the +200v , to the collector of the transistor, now, some moderns board, uses IC for handling the RGB output, check its datasheet and check if it have all voltaje needed.

  • @TheMadmagik
    @TheMadmagik 11 лет назад

    q203, q207 or D207. Basically Q207 is being switched on all the time, it could be a bad resistor in the circuit around Q203- 207, the diode could be another culprit.

    if you missed the insulating pad then youve shorted the transistor collectors together- resulting load of that will cook F200 (I think it is F200 its the fuse in the vertical (X) section.)

    Hey John, this may not be any help, but I had the same red problem with a 25" CRT I have in my Dynamo. I had a cracked solder connection on the red pin from the harness to the chassis. Since it still does it when the game is unplugged, that may not be it, but that is the exact problem I had and that fixed it. You have probably reflowed all of the solder leads though I am sure.
