SL1200Mk5 vs Rega P3 ( :-)same cart used for both decks, only the labelling was wrong on screen

  • Dearest Friends, here we have it: the much asked for shoot-out between the Rega P3 and the Technics SL1200Mk5!!!
The same cart: MP200 had been used for both the P3 AND the SL1200Mk5 in all these 6 songs : Treble (Art Blakey - Noise in the Attic), Bass (Clean Bandit - Dust Clears), Guitars (Doug MacLeod - Black Nights), Piano (Fumio Karashima), Vocals (Rebekah Del Rio - Llorando), Orchestra (Rachmaninoff)..... But i did not label them on screen correctly. You can actually see the purple MP200 was really mounted onto BOTH the decks for each of these songs...only my labelling was wrong (wrong labelling SL+1042) and it should read SL+MP200.
Thank you for pointing this out friends.
*Apologies big time as the labelling is wrong of the carts. But the actual cartridges used are correct. You can see the actual carts used in the video.
It is always P3+1042 vs SL+1042
    And P3+MP200 vs SL+MP200.*
This shoot-out is between the Rega P3 (launched in 2016), versus, the SL1200MK5 using the Jelco HS-25 headshells and Herbie's Way Excellent Mat.
The SL1200Mk5 beats the Rega P3 completely in the shootout stakes, using the extremely capable Nagaoka MP-200 and the Goldring 1042 cartridges, and with or without the record clamp.
My wifey, 2 lovely stepsons and I were in Japan just recently, spending 8 days there with my mother-in-law. I had finished all auditioning and had written down all the sound qualities of these two decks on 30th Sept just before we boarded the flight to Narita. I told myself to dig in and film the narrative in Japan, so that I can produce this video episode on time (as i would still need at least 7 days to complete the video editing). Once I was back in Singapore on the 8th, the intensive video editing started. Working nonstop, I manage to work through the hours and finalize the video on FinalCutProX and upload it just in time to release it at 5:30am here (Singapore time).
If I take some time to reply you lovely friends' messages, I hope you will understand why🤗 as I would really desperately need to sleep in for a few hours before I can get back to replying.
Appearing are my lovely wife, stepsons, my sis-in-law and daughter, Tola from Shanghai, and some teenagers around town!! FIlmed on sites at: Lotteria at Ueno, on the trains, at Yodobashi Camera Akihabara, around my in-laws' place (where my family stayed at) in Kasukabe, DiskUnion Shibuya, HMV Shibuya and Recofan Shibuya.
    Warmest Regards,
    ian.

Hi Ian. Great another review. Thank you! Regarding the Regas, I was told by experienced people that they do not have suspension and can couple the vibration with the floor when used on the rack. Putting them on a sheld attached to the wall makes a complete different sound, more precise, clear and with lower noise floor. I consider that this is a shortcoming of the Regas.

I concur with Ian. I recently sold my Planar 3 and replaced it with a 1210gr. Using the same mp-150 going into the same Project Tube Box DS, the SL absolutely smokes the Planar 3. Bass has much more slam and goes deeper, the highs shimmer more, imaging is much improved, and the sound takes on a more forward, immediate approach. Having near perfect speed and the ability to nail VTA goes a long way in improving sound... I feel like I'm finally extracting the full capability of my cartridge now.

In the end i got a Sumiko Blue point special Evo III, which were a huge upgrade over Nagaoka.

all-in-all when you feel it's time to upgrade, a high-output moving coil like the Sumiko is a huge step in the right direction over your Mp200.

The MoFi StudioDeck as I have tested, is the equal of the P3 in all sound quality parameters except losing to the P3 only in terms of bass depth/extension and dynamics. Cherish your P3 too...i will continue to keep the P3, it is a superb deck at the current market, and its relevance to vinyl-audiophiles still ranks highly and cannot be doubted. Ian this is a fantastic review and, if I may say so, a total vindication of what I have argued for years over the higher end Technics SL**00 series decks. I have a modded 1600Mk2 and I have often been laughed at when I tell people that it significantly outperforms the Nottingham Analogue Dais/SME IV combination I used to own. My own belief is that the accuracy of direct drive offers a leg up in terms of faithful reproduction and dynamics. By comparison many highly regarded belt driven decks, although fabulous, sound sluggish and slightly less detailed by comparison. Your meticulous testing technique also helps to demonstrate that the Technics arm is an extremely well thought through design, and the subject of much R&D by Technics. The DJ deck myth was seized on by cottage industry British turntable manufacturers in the 80s. Sadly it became a widely held view, generally by those who had never done the comparison. Thanks so much for this and my very best wishes to you and your family.

      OOOoooooh :-D nice one that!!!
THANK YOU my friend for sharing even more and helping people away from P3, ProJect Classic, MoFi StudioDeck, VPI Cliffwood (all $1,000), onto the Technics SL.
And thank you for letting us know the DJ deck myth started and proposed by cottage British manufacturers...perhaps conveniently because these TT manufacturers from Britain couldn't muster the industrial know-how and tooling to construct and devise and execute the productions fo a DD deck.
Some DD decks are poor, and they may not help in the cause of the proposition of DD decks. But in many of our experiences, yes, Technics did a fantastic job spot-on.
Warmest Regards to you and your family and vinyl-playing buddies in your community!! :-D we catch up again anytime.

Thanks for your kind words and good wishes Ian. I would highly recommend two tweaks for this deck. Firstly, and this makes a huge performance leap, fit the KAB USA TD1200 Tonearm Damping System. 150 bucks at www.kabusa.com/m1200.htm See also www.kabusa.com/td1200.htm Secondly fit either Isonoe Suspension Footers ($175, same KAB link) or look on EBay for a set of Audio Technica AT605 feet (you might be able to find those in Singapore or Tokyo of course). With those two tweaks in place you will take the sound forward by a massive margin and competing with some very esoteric turntables. Hope you try them. I fitted the KAB tonearm damper and AT feet to my 1600MK2 and the already impressive sound moved forward very significantly.

@@MrCatalysis101 Both you and Ian confirm what I've heard with my own ears, problem is peoples egos and investment in high end belt drives gets in the way of objectivity and truth.

    • @MrCatalysis101
      @MrCatalysis101 5 лет назад +4

Gavin absolutely. I think, given the choice, most turntable designers would prefer to work with direct drive, but it’s a very expensive thing to develop, which is why only the larger manufacturers were more able to go down that route in the past. They could, after all, have stayed with belt drive if they felt it was the better solution. It’s also significant that VPIs recent anniversary model is a DD, proving when cost isn’t an object for a smaller manufacturer that’s clearly the preferred option. And for very good reason.

    Hello there Ian,
Wow, I have been waiting to see your opinion on the Technics 1200. In fact, you will be happy to know that I just bought a brand new one from the late eighties. But more importantly, I must tell you once again that your editing is award worthy. You may have the 'Best' turntable reviews on You Tube. No, not one of the best. They are the best! The way that you edited the sound bits when comparing between the two TT's is incredible. It was nice to see Kita-Senju station. So clean. I was looking at photos of
Adachi and it looks somewhat like Downtown Boston. To me it seems like the SL won out in this comparison. Would that be fair to say? Wow, would you look at all of those SL's at 22:15. I am shopping in the wrong places around here. I must take a trip to Tokyo someday.
Like I mentioned your videos are the best Ian. Just awesome. I enjoyed this very very much. Thank you so much for putting it together. It is always an enjoyable lesson~

Loved this once again! Interesting how your channel has become my absolute favorite these last 2 years. Really cool. I loved the mix with Japan again. Fascinating country that is... I was never really a fan of the P3, don't know why. I thought the Studiodeck sounded warmer and more enticing... This time around, I loved the SL1200 much more. Do you still use the default captive wiring of the MK5? And did you modify anything? Except probably getting the compliance right with the headshell? Oh, I really love the TD-124. What a great deck that is! Even with the pretty okay Acoustic Signature Tango and the really good Nagaoka MP-110 (which is conquering my country thanks to your reviews!). I was already thinking about a SL1200 as a second deck (MK5 or GR). And now, definately :) Great work!

      Thanks for your reply, Ian!
I asked you this because near the end of your video, and for a brief moment during a camera movement that you did on your P3, i think i saw the screws of the 1042 a bit more forward in the headshell than they would be if you were using the standard Rega alignment.
Baerwald alignment also puts the cartridge a bit more forward than the Rega alignment, which by the way, it's very close to the Stevenson alignment.
Yes, 55k, it's hard to believe sometimes. I don't know how that happened. LOL
And yes, those videos take a lot of time from me, but this is not a job or a duty for me, i do this just for fun, so, there's no sacrifice involved!
But i'm pretty sure that your videos take you a looooong time to shot and edit. You're doing a great job, not only with the reviews, but also with the video production.

Ian an excellent job as usual, I see you are getting into film making here, I loved your transitions and how you related everything to your vinyl journey.
The Rega tables always lagged behind Technics in the bass region and your findings matched my own when I had my Technics 1200, which sadly, I don't have anymore.
What some people don't realize is Technics originally made the 1200 for audiophiles as being the best that they could make at the time for the price point thst they were trying to hit, bevause at that time everyone was making direct drive, Yamaha, JVC and Sansui and others. Audiophiles didnt take Technics seriously and the DJs started using them and saw how stable they were and the legend grew from there.
Ian the next shoot-out should be how the old Technics 1200 mk5 competes with the new 1200g and 1200gae and their similarities and differences, along with sound demos. You won't have to buy any new equipment. Ian no one has done this on the RUclips or the internet in general and no one can do it with the pure love and support to the vinyl community that you have shown.
This will answer many questions for others who are looking to buy a 1200g or 1200gae or whether or not to just buy a regular 1200 mk5. Besides you have all three decks and why not. It could be a two part series. Good luck Ian and keep it coming, you are truly a vinyl ambassador.

One thing I can say is that I had a MK7 for a while and while I really did love it, I ultimately chose the MoFi StudioDeck. I needed this after a long day at work! So instead of getting an sl-1200 series turntable I found a wonderful deal on a mint condition Sl-5100 and had to get it. It has identical specs to the 1200 and uses most of the same components only it is housed in a lighter body which is the only drawback. Otherwise it sounds spectacular with my Nagaoka mp-150! It is a beautiful turntable too, classic and simple style. I agree with you assessment on the qualities of both decks and I find the same comparison holds true between my 5100 and my Rega P1 with the 5100 sounding very natural at all ranges while the p1 has a very colored tone and feels more artificially balanced than naturally balanced. It wasn't a fair fight, the P1 just wasn't built on the level that my Technics was. Glad to know I saved hundreds of dollars by not getting a P3. Wonderful video as always!

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  5 лет назад

Dear Buddy :-D!!!! WOW!!!! You've scored a classic! Heh!!! Very happy for yoooou!!!!! :-D it is very difficult to get a mint condition of the 5100...oooooooohh....and i believe you will keep it always with you! MP-150 adorning it now?
      Bliss!!!
I am surprised that in relativity terms, the SL1200 sounds more natural besides being more high fidelity, than the P3. That being said, the P3 is the best new TT at the $900-$1,000 range, beating the very, very, very capable and solidly and painstakingly designed and engineered StudioDeck by Alan Perkins, Harmonic Resolution Systems. I still love my P3 and my StudioDeck. They are very, very capable.
And alas, the SL1200Mk2/3/4/5 still trounce them :-D...
Brother, the P1, i still keep it too..i use it to show new vinyl adopters, that it IS a capable first look-in into vinyl replay and also, 95% or more, of vinyl listeners are NOT audiophiles willing to spend more than US$1000 on a deck. The P1, is very respectable too. I am sure you will keep it for quite some, long time too!
Warmest Regards Budd,,....thank you for your kindest time catching up with me. Such support keeps me going and drive me to dig deep into my own pockets to acquire more equipment to perform reviews and provide information pertinent and useful to as many people as always... thank you so much my friend. The PLX, only looks similar, but underneath the pictures of our screen, everything is different: BMC base of the Technics, precise quiet shielded motor of the Technics, tight bearing tolerances of the Technics, the high performance cabling used in the Technics. Everything😄. Still, I will be doing that review to show it all. Thank you and warmest regards to you, your family and your vinyl'ing friends in Romania 🇷🇴🎶🎵🎶🎶!!!

      Dear Ian,
I know that they are quite different, but the Pioneer received good reviews from sources that seem respectable like www.cnet.com/news/pioneer-plx-1000-a-dj-turntable-an-audiophile-can-love/ and www.stereophile.com/content/gramophone-dreams-4
It seems that this is the only copy of the Technics made by Hanpin that worth a look. If it’s not up to the task, none of the others will.
All the best to you and your family,
      Cătălin

loved this shoot out Ian!!! As always mate, you deliver an honest comparison. Were they all playing through the Mani? If you dont mind sharing the thickness of the mat you are using also?
I've got the SL1200mk2 with the Nagaoka MP110 as you know, and its a joy to listen too - Though i do want to switch carts on it and the MP150/200 or the Audio Technica MPLX 150 (if i can find one) are on the radar .
I am not familiar with any differences between the Mk5 and Mk2 with their tonearms etc but if there is are you able to advise them?
The Technics too ofter gets overlooked as a DJ table, it was originally released as a bonafide HiFi table but due to its strengths and build quality DJ's took to it, but i think those that use the SL series for HiFi are all in the know its a ripper of a table that requires no maintenance or fuss and has a truck load of adjustments right there ready to go!!!

08Boss302 MK5 have better internal wiring in the tonearm and better RCA cables. All other things are more or less the same as in mk2, 3, etc. You could rewire tonearm for very little money with very good cables if you buy mk2 for example. I was just wandering how Jelco HS-25 and Herbie mat influence the sound, in comparison with Technics rubber mat and original Technics headshell. Nevertheless, I think that Technics has much greater potential to thinker with, you could change bearings, PSU, tonearm, get KAB oil bath for original tonearm, etc, while there is not so much potential for upgrading P3. Not to mention that Technics will eventually outlast ourselves probably, while Rega seems not so toughly built in comparison.

You can replace the stylus only on the MP-110 if you want to. I'm running an JNP-200 stylus on my MP-110 body. It sounds great and it cost me $175CDN (ordered from Japanese ebay retailer.) To my knowledge, Nagaoka has never clarified what, if any, difference exist between the cartridge bodies, at least from the MP-100 to MP-200.

    • @Boss-wy2ch
      @Boss-wy2ch 5 лет назад +1

thanks for the replies guys, i wasnt aware of the differences, in my quick google searches there wasnt much info i could find. I wouldn't touch bearings or replace the arm, but i have read about some KAB upgrades in the damping of the arm. this interests me a little as potentially does the wiring, but as as i am not technically effiecient and undoing something that works very well only to raise issues for myself could be a problem LOL - i might be best leaving it all alone?
Tthis hobby always leaves you wondering - how much better will it be if I change or added, and now its got me wondering..... hahaha

Dear Buddy :-D, one fellow esteemed Nagaoka user by the name of Leon, has told me and other friends here, that: "The MP-100 and 110 share bodies, MP-150 and 200 share bodies, and lastly the MP-300 and 500 share bodies too."
From AceTechHD, a fellow friend here who just messaged us on the message board here : "The MK5 has a recessed on/off switch (mostly for DJs), MK2 has an analogue pitch the MK5 is digital, and the MK5 has a spot for an extra head-shell. Otherwise the MK2 and MK5 models are exactly the same and use the very same parts."
Great to see you back :-D!! Heehee Mk2 and MP110 to show for too!!! Forever rewarding the SL1200 is!!! Boss you have fun :-D

This is a very interesting and well presented shootout. BUT! I have some comments. First, why not use a good quality MC cartridge? You have two fine MM carts, but a high quality MC might present a very different point of view. Second, which Herbie's mat did you use? While I like Herbie's mats for the Technics DD tables I used to own, I felt even the 2mm mat exhibited some damping to the sound of my belt drive tables. If you are using a thicker version, lack of dynamics and separation on the P3 would not surprise me. Granted, I have never owned a P3, so it might be that the sonic character does not change much with the changes I am suggesting, but my vintage belt drive tables typically sound best with MC carts and impedance/gain matched SUTs. All tables seem to benefit from correctly choosing mat materials which best compliment the TT's sonic characteristics. Peace!!

As an SL1200MK3 owner, I'm gloating now :) Actually, it's good to know that what I've been hearing isn't false. I've always thought direct drive was the way to go, at least in this price range and the criticism of DD are unfounded. BTW, I got my MK3 from Japan, a buddy brought one from Yokohama to Canada for me - 28,400 yen - not a bad deal! It's mint too. Jealous of those stores you got to visit in Japan! Now we need a MK5 vs GR comparison! (PS: it also calls into question whether replacing the tonearm on SL makes sense. People are putting RB-30X arms on their SLs claiming great rewards, now I wonder.)

I knew it! Dear Ian, thank you once again for your enthusiastic and unbiased review. As always, your reviews show how a true audiophile thinks and with how much attention and preparation you go through all these comparisons. As you know, I have 1210mk2, Nag 110 and Schiit Mani, and was really wandering if I should sell it and buy P3. Now, I have my answer without having to spend additional 400 euros to buy P3. These Technics things are really indestructible and, what is most important, they do sound great! We all know that initional intention from Matsushita was not to buld a DJ turntable, 1200 was just a simplified and cheaper SP-10, a true legend of a turntable and for almost 30 years a reference in broadcasting. Once again, delightful to see your review, and hoping for more good viny, stuff from you my friend! Be good Ian, and best regards!
