    Which one do you like more in the A/B comparison on the tune (which is called "Donkey Dance" by the way)? The Retro Revival or the Beechler Bellite? It's all about taste of course, so let me know if you (dis)agree with my taste.
    That being said, here is a link to the Beechler Bellite (affiliate, doesn't cost you more but helps the channel):amzn.to/331Aws5
    And here is on to the Retro Revival Eric Marienthal model (no affiliation or anything): retro-revival.com/products/rr-modern-line-eric-marienthal-special-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece

      Thanks for the nice words Ken! You are right, should have played more. But this was all the stuff (which was a lot) that went through my head after the first few tries. Now, half year later I have some thoughts to add, probably will do a new video on it sometime soon! So, keep your eye on the channel for that 🎷🙌 (or subscribe is the passive way of doing that of course 😛)

    You should have changed the ligature and use it onthe Retro revival - Oleg's as well..because of that particular reason the sound you have on bellite is a little bit more open. Of course, you played longer on the bellite as well which makes a huge difference.

    • @SharpElevenMusic

      No, not paricularly. Some metal mouthpieces that sound bright have that indeed, like the Dukof, because of the high baffle. But the Beechler is not one of these

      Hi Andes, that's an AKG C414. Very cool mic which I discovered with a mic shoot-out when doing a research for my Masters in music 5 years ago. For most (loud) live recording the shure Sm58 is always the best buck for you quality, but when recording at home (like here) for the videos or for the album I will always use this one. Not the cheapest (around 1000$ I think), but once you get it, no need to have more than a Shure Sm58 and this one. (I also own a clipmic, which can be handy tbh, depends on which kind of gigs you do of course). Hope that answers the questio, otherwise, let me know! 😁

      haha Sergio, thanks for that comment. Of course, we'd do anything to produce the sound in our mind! But I have to say that although I wasn't convinced at this very early comparison, when I had the Retro Revival just a few weeks here, I did change soon after and I'm playing it for 3 years now. I did find my way on it better than the Beechler. But of course, stay with the Beechler if you dig it, Eric sounded amazing as well on that.
      Meanwhile, since the mouthpeice is some years older, you can also hear more examples of Eric play it in music and compare what it did for him. I think he kinda sounds the same :) amazing as always

    Its a tough call. The EM Retro has its own sound. It is bright, but it has depth and a very clear sound. The Beechler is not as bright and maybe a bit more tone, whereas the EM has more of buzz to it, which is NOT bad. Playing a loud music with a lot of electronics, both these mouthpieces have a very modern sound. You're also using an Oleg ligature which brighten up the mouthpieces. Try some differnt ligatures. I think you're splitting hairs. Find out from Joel, what reed works at the optium sound that were made for that mpc. They both sound great.. Very informative video. Great job!!!!

      Hi John,
      You're absolutely right, looking back at this video it looks like splitting hairs too. I made that video quite fast after getting the mouthpiece and I didn't spend a lot of time on it yet. But that was kinda the point for the video, an honest "first" (might have been 3rd or so) impression and comparison.
      Now, almost 4 years later, I can say that about a month after making this video I switched to the Retro and never went back. It's a s you say, that low cut it actually rather a good thing when playing loud music and it's so much more comfortable.
      Is it possible that I recognize your name from the "Saxophonist" Facebook group like 10 years ago? I know there were a lot of interesting threads going on which helped me a lot during my Conservatory years to learn about the saxophone, and I remember Mel Martin, Terry Landy, Charles McNeal and if I'm not mistaken you that made that happen.
      Anyways, have a happy new year!

    Hello! Thank you very much for an amazing reivew! Im playing with 82z alto+jumbo A45 +red java 2.5 reed! Im not big fan of Warrenhil and always wanted bellite-like sounds! While looking for bellite, I found this RR mouthpiece! Do you think that RR will be a good choice? So hard to decide bellite vs RR cuz in here korea, no chance to try those mouthpieces in shop

    • @SharpElevenMusic
      @SharpElevenMusic  3 года назад +2

      Hey man, thanks for your comment, I completely understand you problem there! I It isn't available where I live - in Belgium - as well, so had the luck to try it while being in the States. This video was an honest first impression, and I have to say that short after I decided to go with the Retro Revival.
      Biggest differences, which you of course have to decide yourself what is priority for yourself:
      -The Beechler has quite a lot of resistance, the Retro Revival has (a lot) less resistance while playing.
      -Also, while it's not bad certainly with the Beechler, I feel like intonating is also a bit easier with the RR. Not a big difference, but it really helps.
      - The RR is even a bit brighter than the Beechler, which has a bit more low frequencies I'd say.
      For me the comfort of the RR was the biggest factor for changing. It's for sure a superb quality mouthpiece. And also, the altissimo's come out easier than on the Beechler. Only "disadvantage", is that it has a bit less of some softer low frequencies, but that's subjective taste anyways.
      Hope this helps you man!
      By the way, I played for over 5 years more then weekly in my band with a superb South Korean jazz guitarist, Dalhyun Lee. Hope to visit him and S-Korea somewhere rather soon, such a beautiful country!

      @@SharpElevenMusic Hey! Idk how should I appreciate your long&detailed answer. You will never know how much this helped me seriously.
      When I tried bellite custom 7# like 30min, It wasn't hard to control. I felt A45 would make more squicks.
      I decided to go with RR EMS rather than beechler, durga 4, though I'm worried about 82z+RR EMS would make too much bright, light sound.(Guess I'm just an amateur player so maybe i just have to practice a lot lol)
      I'm happy that you had a great time with a korean. I just searched about him and found that he is a great guitarist!
      Didn't really expect to hear this kinda interesting experience of you.
      If you come to korea, u can do everything till 5am with safe, quick, awesome services and infrastructures.

      @@chk2959 Great to hear it was of help man! I'm actually sure you will have fun on both the Beechler and the RR, they are both really quality mouthpieces anyways.
      If you would happen to be from the area, I believe Dalhyun lives in Busan, where also another Korean friend lives I played with many times, a great jazz pianist named Jusin Min. We played both in the smae latin jazz band. He has now great own tunes and as far as I can see on instagram he is pretty active with his jazz quartet. Bit alike Chick Corea, his musiC. Also from the Busan area if I remember correctly. And with Dalhyun Lee I recorded an album right before he left here back to S-Korea, it's under his own name called "Squeeze", in case you'd be interested.
      Probably will take me a few years, as I have now a 1 year old child which makes it hard to travel besides the corona virus, but thanks for the suggestion to give info if that happens. Probably won't be able to find you here really on RUclips or at least communicate, are you on instagram or so?

    Could you tell me the right Reed fitting on beechler bellite custom alto 7? Thanks

    • @SharpElevenMusic
      @SharpElevenMusic  4 года назад +2

      Hi Emanuele, I used here both a opening 8 on the Beechler and the Retror Revival (I think I forgot to mention that). However, I like a little stronger reed on the Retro, Iuse the traditional Vandoren Blue ones. On the Retro the 3 works nicely, on the Beechler a 3 is possible, but needs a few hours of playing to start working. A 2,5 would work bit better there.
      But anyhow, that's for a slightly bigger opening. I think Eric Marienthal says he uses both 2,5 and 3 on his Beechler 7*. I guess he uses a 2,5 when he needs it to function quickly before a gig, and a 3 when he has more time to work it in.
      Hope that helps. Let me know.

    • @SharpElevenMusic

      Hey Daniel, the one on the Retro Revival is a very standard one that came with the mouthpiece. The one on the Beechler is called "Olegature" which you can find on olegproduct.com, one of the few to have very small ligatures that actually fit on that mouthpiece

    metal mouthpieces tend to be a bit too free blowing and loud for my liking.
    that said, im a fan of the jackie mclean/eric dolphy 'elastic' sort of sound that you get on hard rubber mouthpieces. i use a Selmer Soloist (D) and it helps me get just that. anyway, good content mate

    • @SharpElevenMusic
      @SharpElevenMusic  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Yakov! Sure, I certainly can understand metal mouthpices are quite derective to a bright sound. Mostly they are really freeblowing indeed, although that Beechler is one of the few that has quite some resistance. That Retro on the other hand plays super freeblowing, and itr shows in the sounds. Rubber mouthpieces would be probably around the middle on my "Desmond - Sanborn" scale, because it has a lot of body with when needed a little edge.
      And by the way, I happen to own that same Selmer Soloist on my alto and it's a beautiful mouthpiece! I like it when playing soft, so I once used it when I was part for a Desmond/Baker tribute concert (you can hear me play it in this vlog about that concert, towards the end ruclips.net/video/KQ-uadtKRlw/видео.html). It's only too small of a opening for me for in louder bands ( and I play almost always louder projects) so it stays a prettty mouthpiece in my desk, which I occasionally like to play, certainly when trying to get the Desmond mood.

Now I'd say its a bit in between. Well, it definitely doesnt react like a traditional step baffle like the dukkof or Lebayle studio models I played before. It definitely has more control dynamically and to adjust your sound (compared to the step baffles). Hope that helps
