    I finally quit passing out candy to the kids after having some teens come to my door and grab handfuls. Then come back again a while later and do it again. I had to be ready for about 200 kids. So, now I turn off the lights. black out the windows. And make home made chicken and rice soup, and have a little candy for myself. So far I haven't had one kid come to the door when I had the lights off. Probably because there are a few houses around me that also leave their lights off now.

    In England growing up in the 1960s we played Bob Apple (apples dropped into a bowl of water and your hands behind your back, you tried to get the apple with your mouth) We didn’t have pumpkins then, so turnips were carved into spooky lanterns . We made witches/cats/ghosts and hung them up as decorations and would sit and read or an adult would read ghost stories. I was fortunate to live near an old mansion and we were invited to ghost hunt, but I think there was a lot of adult intervention in the noises we heard lol.Trick or treat spoiled the atmosphere when it was introduced in the 1980s as it was more about commerce and dressing up than the Celtic ancient customs and atmospheric times we experienced. Happy Halloween everyone 🧙🏻‍♀️✨

    In Spain we always have "el dia de todos los santos" the next day of Halloween 1st of November. This day we go to the graveyard to bring flowers our dead relatives. It's a day of respect instead of a party. But now, as well as Uk, Halloween is in everywhere and my son will wear a ghost pirate contume (pirates Caribbean film) and ask for candys to the neighbours.

    Samhain is pronounced "SOW-en", where "sow" rhymes with "cow". :-) In the Irish language, "mh" makes a w or v sound. In my name (Niamh) it's a v sound, in the word Samhain (which is also the Irish word for November), it is a w sound. :-)

    • @tannewton
      @tannewton 6 лет назад

      Niamh-Creates interesting, funny and a bit confusing. Why can't the Irish spell in the English way? Irish names can be so confusing. You know, how many people mispronounce the Irish name Saoirse because it has too many letters ;) However, I love that name very much. It has become one of my favourite female names in the world (partly because of the actress Saoirse Ronan).

    • @NiamhCreates
      @NiamhCreates 6 лет назад +6

      Because Irish is a completely different language than English. That's like asking why Italians or Spanish don't pronounce words the English way. They are different languages. Irish pronunciation is actually a lot more consistent than English. Here's a great video detailing some of the pronunciation in the Irish language: ruclips.net/video/oIokUII7LX0/видео.html
      :-)

      @@tannewton How about English speakers just make a bit more effort to pronounce the Irish names correctly? There are plenty of names that can be strange or difficult for English speakers to pronounce (try some Asian or African names) - since when is English the default?

    • @tannewton
      @tannewton 3 года назад

      @@davidhardwick3816 I'm sorry for my past younger self two years ago. About almost one year ago I did try to learn to read Irish. I don't remember everything cause I gave it up shortly after that. But I do remember a few consistent rules that are indeed more consistent than English. Again, I apologise.

    in Germany, halloween is not as popular as in the US but I think it's getting more accepted by many Germans. Perhaps, one day it will become a national holiday. This year however, the 31st of October is going to be a commemoration day in memories of the founder of the protestant faith, Martin Luther. That day is called "Reformationstag" in German (reformation day).

    Samhain is Irish, not British.
    Calan Gaeaf would be the British version of what is now called Halloween in English.
    Calan Gaeaf is Welsh and means "the Eve of Winter" - and was always celebrated here with trick or treating etc.
    With all due respect and no offence intended, British does not mean English.
    The official language of Britain is Welsh. As crazy as that may sound to those that do not know this - it's true.

    If you're a Christian & celebrate this holiday then this is what also you're celebrating. Halloween has always been about paganism & sacrificial rituals. If you have celebrated it & no longer want to there is mercy for you in Christ.
    Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
    Romans 12:2
    Defending
    Halloween
    Is Defending
    WITCHCRAFT
    PAGANISM-0OCCULT-DIVINATION SORCERY-BLACK MAGIC-NECROMANCY AND MANY OTHER DARK, ESOTERIC ARTS
    Have nothing to do with the deeds produced by darkness, but instead expose them. ~ Ephesians 5:11
    I used to celebrate Halloween thinking it was fun & innocent until I really dove deep & realized this isn't what God would want.
