One of the truly timeless qualities of Tolkien's poetry is that I can picture both Rankin Bass, and Peter Jackson, orcs and goblins singing this song.
rankin and bass did it better though, admit it
;P
@@ffxiarcadius I'd absolutely love to see a rankin bass mini-series of the silmarilian. R&B is still by far one of the best versions of the story.
@@ffxiarcadius eeeeeh I don’t think so. I think they’re both very…very flawed adaptations. With one of them I’m a lot less willing to forgive due to the length of the book. (Seriously I will NEVER forgive how they scrapped the arkenstone when it was the big motivator for the battle of the five armies…)

They added a chorus and moved a couple lines around, but it's basically the same song. All the lyrics are in the book. Still, the composer went to some trouble to make it work as a longer song, and it's very memorable.

Fact: One of the singers of this song is none other than the legendary Thurl Ravenscroft himself. The Goblin King, in the subsequent scene in this film was the late and legendary voice actor John Stephenson, who also voiced Bard the Bowman in this film. Stephenson made a name for himself with work for Hanna-Barbera during the 60s and 70s and beyond, also doing work for Rankin-Bass for this film as well as "The Return of the King." Otherwise, he is best known for his work on various 80s cartoons, namely GI Joe, The Smurfs, Bionic Six and above all others of that decade, The Transformers.

I’m still a teenager kid and even though this movie was released 30 years before me, it is a huge part of my childhood, watching it on an old VHS TV with greasy popcorn hands and with my cousins over and over and I remember being obsessed with the hobbit so much I wanted to live in a hobbit hole, go outside barefoot, and go on a great adventure with my friends. This is truly the most memorable and important movie ever
Sverige?
I'm glad you had this in your childhood, mate. Hope you're doing well. Remember, adventure lies right outside your door 🤙
"Trapped! The Goblins have us!"
Second main opposition the company faces in the movie but definitely memorable. I very much like this version because the true menace is shown in the darkness--the towering monsters, sinister laughter and the 13 Dwarves and Bilbo, ALL captured and led to face who knows what fate. If it were in the firelight it would be one thing but that shot of the rock being rolled back, and Thorin's line above, makes it that much more ominous.

"The Ponies! The Ponies! we're being robbed!"
one of my favorite songs out of this film...
*sigh* they sure don't make 'em like this anymore TT.TT
Yes, they do. They're called Peter Jackson's Hobbit films.
"films". An Unexpected Journey was good, but the other two were awful.
No, all three films are superb, even the majority of Tolkien's family thinks so. The only one that disagrees is Christopher.
Well I'm not Tolkien or his family. If they like it that's their opinion. Desolation of Smaug and Battle of the Five Armies felt awkward, cluttered, rushed, and (to me) did not carry the same amazing spirit of adventure I felt with the book version of The Hobbit.
Tamriel, the Mayor and his aide's inclusion in the movies cut the pacing and dragged the story on, and without them the movies would have run the same exact way. Tamriel was in there to have a strong female lead and nothing else, The Mayor and his aide were "comic relief" and the aide repeatedly reminded us that he was useless and annoying. He didn't even change his ways, or something generic like that, and he just dissapears from the story afterwards.
Smaug's attitude was completely different, which to me is the crux of "The Hobbit", to keep Smaug as he was; a strong, potent monster who was as wise as he was smug, not pissed and grouchy. I didn't like his voice either, it wasn't booming, ancient or commanding, just British. And voice deepened.
The thing is that there was some real rubbish that felt so out of place and thought that you should just deal with it, like the barrel chase, Dwarves v Smaug "fight" with so much build up to a confusing and embarassing finale, and the Battle of the 5 armies (parts with Thorin and the Pale Orc and his lackey vs. Tamriel, mostly).
I just feel that the adaption wasn't as good as it could be, and that many mistakes were made. My dad felt the same way, and he's read everything, including the Silmarillion.
I've read it all as well, The Hobbit is a children's book, Jackson had to target it to all age groups.
This version kills Perter Jackson's. it's awsome
Peter Jackson's version kills Peter Jackson's version.
the art alone kills his version HOWEVER compared to some other versions and considering he was smart enough to seperate it into 3 parts AND included all the chapters an went indepth with the necromancer (when I read the book I thought it was just a random enemy and not sauron) it did a pretty dam good job....not as great as this but better than most
Nick Lancial I'm pretty sure the necromancer wasn't brought up in the book. Really Peter Jackson added a lot of things that weren't in the book, like a love interest for one of the dwarves, or Radagast the Brown who was mentioned but not shown, or Alfrid. They also turned multiple scenes that weren't fight scenes into fight scenes for the sake of having lots of action like the barrel ride or the confrontation with Smaug. Honestly, I think the Hobbit could have worked fine as 2 movies and been far more true to the book. As the film trilogy is, it's kinda overdone in my opinion.
he was brought up twice once when they were on the outskirts of Mirkwood and asked if there was an alternate way through Gandalf said North would take them to the White mountains where hobgoblins and other terrible things lived and if they had went south it would take them too close to the lair of the necromancer and gandalf knew if they went there they'd never escape.....he was mentioned one more time in the aftermath of the battle of 5 armies when gandalf said that part of his business south involved the council successfully driving the necromancer away
Well, while they're interpretations of the same song, it's comparing Apples and Oranges. The difference between this and Peter Jackson's is that this is supposed to sound good.
My favorite song from the album right here
That's some pretty impressive drum work on this track.
i would love to see a heavy metal virsion of this song :D
Pretty With the Lights Out does a pretty hard version of this.

Ever since I heard this I can no longer hear the word goblin without this playing in my head.
I LOVED this song when I was a kid, I would constantly get it stuck in my head
The percussion here is incredible. Beyond the funk and awesome cymbal work, there are elements that remind me of things I like about drumming in black metal.

It would've been interesting to hear how Howard Shore would have interpreted this song. Perhaps expanded the length, keeping the tempo, emphasizing more on the vocals, and not loose the overall striking mood that makes the goblins so terrifying.
