    I've been training my mixed breed since I was 10 (I'm now 13) and we went to our first NADAC trial in July. She was eliminated for leaving the ring, but I was proud of her. She and I are in a dog training club, and we competed at our local fair and she got third place in novice tunnelers!

    As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. This stuff is crucial for good physical and mental health, hiking is just not enough, when any creature just does one type of exercise they get bored but get overuse injuries. Video tape your dog and keep it showing how they walk, jog, run, jump, so you can see over time how they do, but also to make sure your dog is not overusing or having issues. It is such a perfect tool, besides a good memory of having fun. This works for kids too, we use it for athletes all the time. Thanks Zak and Trevor.

    When I was thinking of getting a border collie, I was planning on doing some of this. She's still a tiny little 5 month old, but I'm about to buy a kit which has all the same equipment he shows here. I think it's a good time to start, just for the mental and physical exercise aspects. Not planning on taking her into competitions or anything.
    Thanks a bunch, I'm gonna go sub to Doggie Dojo too. ^_^

    Love your videos, they're so helpful and easy to follow! VID SUGGESTION/PLEA: Could you please do a video on how to stop your dog from scavenging/ eating everything outside when they're off leash or out on a walk? It's not really "leave it", more like their habit of constantly searching and 'Vacuuming' everything on the ground!
    Thank you so much :)

As a fellow New Orleanian, you know how rampant heartworm disease is here. Could you do a video on crate rest? I am struggling with my very bright, but very very bored dog. She is becoming territorial, overly vocal and depressed - and she absolutely cannot be exercised.

I think it would be important to say that we can not do these exercises before 10 or 12 months old. We have to wait until his body is strong anought to do this. I use the method you use for training my dog with treats. but now he won't do anything unless he sees that I have a treat in my hand

    • @mariagriffin1518
      @mariagriffin1518 7 лет назад +46

      You've probably been 'baiting' him in your training, by luring with a treat instead of simply rewarding with it. Rub a hot dog slice on your hands until they smell like the treat, but leave your treats on a counter nearby. Then, let your dog smell your hands and ask him to sit. Immediately give him the treat from the counter. Eventually, he should start to trust that even if a treat isn't in your hands, he'll be rewarded. Also, try putting a treat in your pocket without your dog seeing. At a random time during the day, ask him to sit. If he complies, praise him and treat him immediately with the treat you've stashed in your pocket. He'll learn that a treat can come from anywhere at any time, so he'd better obey. I hope that this helps. :)

    I think there should be dog parks that aren’t just fenced areas, but that have agility equipment for dogs. If owners don’t have proper space or materials for a backyard agility course, they can use a public one (if they existed).

    • @Sandy33569
      @Sandy33569 4 года назад

      the amazing truckosaurus Not sure you'd want a bunch of dogs together in a dog park setting with an agility course on it.
      There are some facilities that will rent out their courses for use. However, they will usually only rent out to this experienced with agility.
      What I've done besides rentals is looking into run thrus (for those who are experienced) or there's a fenced in field that I go to when it's not used. I set up some of my portable jumps, tunnel, and or weave poles to practice little sequences and skills in between my classes. There are quite a few people I know who practice in parks (NOT dog parks) or fenced fields like this.

      It is because of the colors they see. They see blue and yellow better then red for example

    • @Homeskooling4Dogs
      @Homeskooling4Dogs 7 лет назад

      I'm not certain but I would guess it goes back to the days when it was believed that dogs could only see in black and white with varying shades of grey so the humans choose colors without that being a consideration. Dogs are basically blind to Christmas since they cannot see reds and green. I have purchased my equipment from www.affordableagility.com They seem to have frequent sales on products so it pays to be on there email list.

    My dog (profile picture) is very reactive to other dogs. I don't know if she wants to attacks them or play with them.
    When she sees a dog her ears pluck up, and her fur is standing up (making her look bigger). If the dog is in a certain range she starts to growl, bark and then lunge towards them.
    I now tend to hide behind cars, but in some situations that is nearly impossible, and she just makes an embarrassing scene. I just want her to be less stressed and have a fun life, but this is making it near impossible.
    (She was brought up with a fantastic Labrador who loved everyone/thing, and now lives with my chihuahua mix who she plays with frequently)

    • @YOJOmonkey54
      @YOJOmonkey54 7 лет назад

      Just cause your dog is a golden retriever, I'd say she's just trying to be playful. They aren't really known for being aggressive towards strangers. The ears going up could just be due to the fact that she's now alert of another dog, but if the fur stands up this is usually due to being anxious. I wouldn't be too worried about the growling, barking, and lunging though because that doesn't mean anything bad, the only thing you can take from it is that they're excited about the new dog in their sight.
      I don't think she is too stressed, just that she wants to play with everyone she can, since you did raise her with playful dogs. If you want to stop or lessen the excited reaction this, Zak did make a video with a German Shepherd going through walking your dog without them getting distracted, can't remember what it was though. I'd just bring treats on walks, and whenever this happens, just call for her name and reward her whenever her attentions stays on you vs the new dog.
      Hope this helps you with your dog! (she looks very cute)

    • @Celineylovesyou
      @Celineylovesyou 7 лет назад

      I would recommend consulting with a positive animal behaviorist. A private consult can help you relax a little (no new dogs in the room with you) and when you first contact them, make sure you provide details of the behaviors you see from your dog and any patterns. For example, try to describe the vocalizations as much as you can (high pitched, low pitched, long tones, short staccato sounds, whiny, growly), is she baring teeth, is she air snapping. Also try to make note of whether she seems to be triggered by the sight of the other dog, the sound of the other dog (like barks or even just the jingle of dog tags from a distance). A good behaviorist will help you come up with a plan that prioritizes safety and your dog's well-being and gradually help your dog cope with the stress of her triggers. Or she might refer you to a colleague or a specialist, just someone who might be even more effective for your case.

    Zak, my lab puppy is about 5-6 months old. I'll be honest and say, I didn't stay on his training like I should have and he has learned some bad habits. Could you do a video about correcting behaviour? Also, he gets really possessive when eating and growls (and will bite) someone who even gets near him... how can I fix that?

    This is off subject but my dog has food aggression, she growled when we tried to take her food off her, and then we tried a technique for 2 weeks and it worked then every once in while we take her bowl off her and she's fine. But this time today she growled but not just once like she use to multiple times.

    hi zak He need some serious help. I have a Jack Russel terrier cross with a wippet. he lives with two other dogs so he clearly knows how to interact with other dogs but if I meet anyone on a walk with a dog he flips out. even if he can see a dog from over 100m away he will lock on and I can't break his focus. I have tried everything I know. any suggestions?

    Can you do some new videos on frisbee? Now that the weather is getting nice I want to start teaching my terrier how to play, the only problem is that he lives up to the terrier name and would rather smell things, pee on things, or if I do get him to chase the frisbee he goes and chews on it. Even if I put him on a long line he braces himself at the other end and chews on the frisbee. How do I get him more interested in the frisbee and bringing it back right now we're using food to teach him to fetch but I want the frisbee to be the reward.

    How about a video on how to teach a dog to use a tread mill with you and eventually on its own.

    So I'm looking into SAR and the requirements needed before volunteering. Dare I say it, I'm the man for the job but paying for training, certification and survival equipment out of my own pocket just ain't gonna fly. Oh well, good luck to anyone lost / stuck in the woods....
