Congratulations Kay. Your attitude served you both so well! I remember realising after birth that it starts off feeling like your story and your preferences and soon enough you realise that it’s not about just you any more but also your baby and their story and their needs and then that becomes true of your life from that moment on! You did so well and richly rewarded with a beautiful Bub. X

Thank you so much for this! I am currently 19 weeks pregnant, and I haven't been watching many labor or birth story related videos or anything, cause I just wanna enjoy where I'm at now and not freak out about birth, like I'm telling my self, when it comes, we will just be able to do it together, it'll be fine. But I knew watching you would help me calm down, cause your energy and calmness and the positivity are such a supportive thing, and it makes me feel like, even if things don't go as planned (which they of course never do), it's okay, and it's an experience, and you will be more you for it. I twill happen as it happens, and that is the most perfect way for it to happen.
When I found out I was pregnant, I was just so excited about you coming back when you're ready and telling us about your experiences with your baby and your new family with Dom and the kitties, cause it feels so soothing listening to someone whose philosophy I agree with and support even when I can't reach it, someone I can relate to and whose thoughts ground me, so I just wanted you to know that this type of thing means so much to me, I don't feel scared, I feel even better about it, and thank you for being such a beautiful soul!

Oh bless you! I'm so glad I was able to share in a way that felt calming for you, that's what I hoped for! I didn't want to romanticise it but I also didn't want to only share the hard parts as it was a really incredible, empowering experience. I've never felt so connected to my body! You're going to be amazing & congratulations on your pregnancy ♥

I don’t have any littles yet but what really stood out to me in your story, something I hope to take with me, is your mindset! ‘This is the ideal, but what happens is what was going to happen’ and how you were able to see the good in everything without dismissing the bad. Thank you for sharing!!

Thank goodness for having a health system that includes midwives! They are amazing and you are amazing for coming through this experience and still trying to keep to your ideals of leaning on the positives and enjoying the 'experience' of motherhood as much as you can.
I have a rare genetic kidney disease where I pass kidney stones on a semi-regular basis and I learned the hard way that it is easier to control pain if you get on top of it before it reaches its peak.

Hi Kay, watching this brought back memories of my daughter’s birth nearly 40 years ago! I was induced at 42 weeks and it still took 3 days for her to arrive! I also had a retained placenta and had a spinal anaesthetic after delivery to enable a manual removal. That went a bit wrong and I ended up propped up on pillows, pivoting on my bottom with my legs up in stirrups. I have had issues with the nerves in the tops of my legs ever since!😏. I was so sore afterwards having been stitched, unstitched and re stitched and watching what happened really traumatised my poor husband so much he never wanted any more children. I was in hospital for a week as my daughter developed severe jaundice and needed phototherapy. Luckily they put me in a side room and I managed to get some sleep even with the unit lighting up the room. I am very blessed to have had a healthy baby- who turns 40 next Spring!🫣 - and I am so glad that maternity care has moved on. Your midwife sounds amazing! xxx

I felt like a failure for a while after the birth of my son, as my labour did not go entirely as I had hoped. Not a birth story but I can empathize with that horrid uncomfortable feeling in hospital after a procedure. I had an ovarian cystectomy this past winter and spent two nights in hospital sleeping on a birthing bed (Christmastime and only the maternity ward was staffed), and it was horrific! Those beds are not for sleeping, and the pain and discomfort was next level. I cannot imagine going through that after the blissful environment of the first room you were in, and wanting to bond with baby. Thank you for sharing!

Love your honesty, I think it’s so helpful for first time mums to hear stories like yours. I had a hemorrhage after my first was born - just like you, following a non medicated birth - and was rushed off to theatre, she had skin to skin with dad like your little boy. General anaesthetic and they removed a mini second placenta which was an early reabsorbed twin. I’d never heard of this! Thanks to modern medicine we live to tell the tale. She’s a healthy 6 yr old now ❤ sending so much love to you Kay, enjoy these precious early years with your son, and thank you for your channel, i always enjoy your videos 😊

Thanks for sharing this. My two babies are now 13 and 16 but listening to you brought so many memories (both good and not so good!) back. I wish I'd heard more birth stories before having mine as my first labour went badly after also being pregnant for 42 weeks like you! With my first I ended up with an emergency c sec after a day of labouring and getting to the pushing stage. But my second baby 3 years later was born just after my due date v quickly and naturally. I wish before I'd had my first I had understood that every birth is different and we definitely shouldn't feel blame or regret for what happens. So nice to see your little family growing and to have you back on RUclips. X

I highly recommend getting the epidural. I got it, slept through the night with a couple of brief interruptions while the nurse checked out my progress dilating, then the next morning at about 11am they woke me up and said that it's time to push the baby out. I had 2 elastic bands on my belly, holding sensors, one for the baby's heart beat and one to monitor my contractions. 15 minutes later she was born. They told me when to push and I pushed with all I had. I was starting to tear a bit so they did a small cut which they sewed back afterwards. The sewing was probably the worst part. Epidurals are wonderful, I was numb from the waist down, but I could go to the bathroom pushing the IV stand, I could walk fine.

I have hypermobility like you do, and I also have a fused spine on my lower back following a Scoliosis. Future appointments to be had with doctors and anesthetists. However, I think from doing some research I may need a general anesthic c-section which is scary. But it would be the safest thing for me and baby. That's all that matters in the end. Enjoyed your telling of your experience. My first pregnancy was not eventful but it was without timed contractions - it started with timings but it just developed into what seemed a perpetual contraction - however baby was born after 8 hours in labour. And nearly 2 hours in the delivery room - was very painful and delivery was just short of the medical staff taking me to have a section. My next labour however was great - I was a full two weeks late and no one had mentioned anything about inducement - I went into labour naturally and had a textbook labour - stayed at home timing the contractions and went to hospital at about 4 minutes between contractions. Was in hospital and gave birth within 40 minutes. It was still labour and therefore painful but so much more easy than before - and delivery was very quick. Couldn’t have asked for anything better the second time.

Thanks so much for sharing your story! Congratulations on the arrival of your baby boy! I resonated so much with your story! I had my baby boy last summer at a birth centre. Laboring in the water was so peaceful and really helped with the pain. My midwife was monitoring his heartbeat and it started to drop, so we moved onto the bed where things quickly escalated. I pushed him out really quickly, resulting in a very bad tear. I hemorrhaged as well, and had to be taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. My baby and husband weren't able to come with me in the ambulance and I just remember feeling so many emotions at that time. I was so devastated to be seperated from my baby. I had to go into surgery right away and same as you, my birth was totally natural and unmedicated, and suddenly I was hooked up to an IV, given multiple painkillers and sedation. I just felt so sad, and like I had done something wrong. I tried so hard to give my baby the best start (as we all do), but it felt like that everything I had worked so hard for, was just ripped away so suddenly. It took me a long time to make peace with what happened, but I have a beautiful, healthy and happy baby boy and that is truly all that matters! 💙 thank you for your courage in sharing your story! ❤️

Thank you Kay for sharing your story, I had really hoped you would but equally would have understood had you wanted to keep it private. I too was separated from my baby after birth, he had a forceps delivery and a black eye as a result so had to be given paracetamol and put in an incubator. So I totally get why you were so upset. I had an epidural so I think you’re amazing for enduring the pain and yeah don’t blame you for saying that next time you wouldn’t ( I only had a few contractions without it and that was enough 😂) I’m so happy you had the birth you wanted and glad you are ok after your surgery. Hectic story Kay. Gosh I too had a similar experience, these things are totally out of our control. Glad you and baby are fine. I live in Cape Town South Africa and our hospitals are fabulous and not so sticky when it comes to early or latent labour. You are treated like a queen and the food is fabulous. So different to what I hear that side. Your baby gets roomed in but they take care of everything until you are strong enough. Your next baby will probably just fall out 😅

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it’s so special and important and I’m grateful. I’m 5 weeks pp and on the road to recovery. I relate to everything you said and it made me laugh when you said you’d get an epidural next time (I had a home birth with no pain relief too and asked for the epidural multiple times as a gauge of how far along I was haha - but also because the pain was a lot more intense than I imagined!) I’m finding recovery and breastfeeding a bit difficult right now, if you had any advice or were able to share your experience, I’d appreciate it! All the best

It's such an intense experience isn't it! It's something you really can't ever prepare for. I hope you keep healing and recovering, my main advice is take it slow, ask for all the help and with breast feeding - ask your midwife/health visitor and get them to come out and check your latch as many times as you need! There are also breastfeeding groups you can go to in some children centres, definitely recommend! x

I’ve raised a glass of rose wine to celebrate. That’s my excuse 🤣. You had a bit of a time. I realise I must have been lucky. Ist 3 hour, 2nd 2 hours and 3rd less than 2 labours. No pain relief or stitches.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us! I also had a water birth with my first baby and although it helped me cope with the pain and speed my labour along after a lengthy 36 hours I didn't have such a great experience more than anything I think down to my midwife ... I wasn't taken seriously about when I said the head was coming so whilst she chatted to the trainee my daughter literally flew out with absolutely no guidance through the pushing resulting in a very nasty tear that landed me in theatre just to be stitched up. Also my daughter was back to back so I stayed on all 4s the whole time and throughout transitioning my bum kept raising up out of the water uncontrollably and the midwife just kept telling me to stop... Turned out that was happening due to my coxix dislocating and despite after birth me explaining that it was unbearable to sit up my coxix hurt that bad they never checked so I was sent home and spent a week left with a dislocated coxix until a visiting midwife finally took me seriously when my lower back swelled like a balloon and i explained my bum raising during transition. Needless to say she was horrified and warned me that if it didn't go back into place on it's own by the end of that week I'd have to go back to hospital (luckily it did) it was an overwhelming experience especially being only 19 years old and refusing any pain relief due to a history of anxiety and panic attacks, I felt happier when I felt some what in control, I couldn't even tolerate the gas and air but I was so grateful me and my girl where both ok. My second birth was sooooo different!! So please don't be put off by the intensity of your first.
My second daughter I was able to have at home, I was terrified and convinced it would be another long labour like my first but to my surprise that wasn't the case! My two midwives where incredible, put on a nice girly movie for me, lowered the lights and told me and my husband to cuddle up and share the moment and that they where there when we needed so I laboured with them down stairs for a little while as I wasn't in established labour at that point and I warned them my previous delivery was a very long one... A little while after they came up and insisted I stood up and with that I suddenly felt a need to push, my established labour was just 21 minutes!!! She was born in her waters and they where able to stitch me up at home, she ran me a lovely bath after and kept the whole atmosphere so calm, they where amazing and it was such an incredible experience!! As they say every pregnancy and every labour is different and it's sooo true! Xx

I was in labour with my second son for less than 20 minutes. Nice and quick, then I had to be taken into theatre due to retained placenta. I think I was in more pain after the birth! 😮😂 X

Wow, Kay, your birth story is litrally THE SAME as mine. The only difference I had is that my midwife lead hospital was separate from the hospital so I was put into an ambulance and taken to a main hospital as my son was stuck too,but everything from the birth, hemorrhaging, theatre, stitches, spinal, tubes, blood loss, litrally everything! In the end, i had vontous as i had nothing left, and he was still stuck.i😂Isn't it so crazy that we can go through it, but our bodies heal! Honestly, we are super heros!!! Thank you for sharing your story❤ it takes me straight back to my birth ❤so hlad you are doing well again x x x

Fellow Kay-follower from the US here! I think what they call the sweep is what we call stripping the membranes-or, at least, that’s what my midwife called it. Although he was from England originally, heh! I was 42 weeks pregnant and my (very cool male English) midwife encouraged it as a relatively gentle way to encourage the baby to…er, get moving. (BTW that baby is now almost 23!) Sometimes though it may be too gentle, in a manner of speaking, and then I believe induction is often the next move.

I had my son 32 years ago Kay and my experience of birth was also not pleasant to say the least. I remember the pain, the fear of the unknown, the whole experience was so scary and my husband said afterwards that he would never put me through that again and that it was barbaric. My husband had a vasectomy when our son was 3 months old. I always said I only wanted one child but I could not have gone through another birth. I also didn’t have much pain relief and maybe if I had my experience would have been different and I may have had more children but I am more than happy that I had a beautiful, healthy baby and that was good enough for us ❤

Lovely to listen to your story. My first was so funny as I was expecting lots of pain. I was on time Friday 13th. I spent too long at home wondering if the pain was enough. I almost had the baby in the car but got to the ward they were saying laid back until I made a weird groan. They look my leggings off and it was all systems go and baby born a few minutes later about 15 mins later I was in the shower. 2nd was one day late I was in labour up a mountain (it had a road I just sat looking at view) waters broke. My son was allowed in the labour room I had told him to say don't worry mummy soon be over so when it got painful I looked at him. Again baby came quickly. ,3rd one was in a different hospital my children weren't allowed I was in a dirty room waiting for a bed as 3 weeks early. Midwife was awful so I went and sat outside the hospital. Came back and only 6cm but then I was 10 they wanted me to go in the lift to labour ward I said no. Baby came no pain relief for any of my births. I was incredibly blessed.

Did you do hypnobirthing birthing course before labour?...i think that could have helped with the anxiety....although in the moment it's hard ❤ i really wanted a natural birth but had to have a last minute planned c section because i developed pre clampsia at 40 and a half weeks. I am still sad about it 😢 but its just how it was obviously meant to be 💫

X
You do forgot the pain to a degree ....and yes in heartbeat ....I would have gone through it all again...well done to yourself....to Dom. And a brilliant midwife and her team... 😊...oh and huge congratulations once again on your baby boy. Xx

Hi Kate , now after have hearing how your sons birth went , we should and can all now understand why you never came back to You Tube for 6 months.
Obviously you needed to get all your emotions together and be in a more comfortable state in your body while talking about it all.
It is your decision to not put your son on the Internet but perhaps it would help people to stop bugging you to if you put a New Born picture of him on a vlog somewhere. What have you named your son ?
Hope you both have a lovely time making memories with him over the future years to come .
