I feel like there is still some confusion over Robert Crumb. The superchat question was incorrect. Robert Crumb did not create Felix the Cat. He created Fritz the Cat (yes it was originally a comic strip). Crumb was against the movie but signed a contract (via his wife at the time) giving rights to the filmmakers to use the character. He talks about this briefly in the '94 documentary.
I know this isn't the consensus, but my favorite PTA film is The Master and Jonny Greenwood's score for that film is one of my favorite scores of all time.
I feel like the purposes of the animated sequence in the third story of the french dispatch was to suggest that it wouldn’t make sense for a written play-by-play of the sequence to be published in a magazine, so it was published as a comic, like the narrator had said happened earlier in the story. I understand the criticism that it would have been cool to see the sequence in live action, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it wasn’t for artistic purposes.
I took it similarly to how when they wanted to show the character’s war story in the second segment, so they showed a stage adaptation of his story, because it wouldn’t necessarily make sense for frances mcdormand to go into his whole story.
i think this should be a regular thing for the channel. it's fun and new and hopefully these kinds of annual quickie catchups aren't as time consuming. this format could also be used to check on movies that might've been used throughout the year but didn't have a dedicated quickie for.
Small language/history/Shakespeare lesson: Currently attending grad school to study Shakespeare and I nerd out about this stuff, so a small correction: Shakespeare did not write in Old English, he wrote in Early Modern English. Most Shakespeare you hear is "untranslated"...because translating Shakespeare is honestly weird to do because his language is not much different from what we speak today. There are, of course, some obsolete words (thou, forsooth, feeze, etc), but Early Modern English and our own Modern English are not that different from each other. What makes Shakespeare hard is not necessarily the words themselves, but how he arranges and structures them. Shakespeare IS hard, but not nearly as difficult and impenetrable as untranslated Old English. Old English fell out of use around 1170, almost 400 years before the birth of Shakespeare in 1564. Early Modern English lasted from the late 1400's into the 1650's, where it was replaced by our own Modern English. For comparison, here are the first two lines of Beowulf, untranslated from Old English - Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, Here are the first two lines of text from Macbeth, "untranslated" from Early Modern English - FIRST WITCH When shall we three meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain? Not much different from what we say today, just in a peculiar order to fit a verse line. Nearly all Shakespeare you see is "untranslated" because, well, there's nothing to translate. His language is mostly our own. I remember being in a production of The Winter's Tale and talking to someone after the show who said "Wow, thank you guys for translating the text to normal English. It was so easy to follow." We didn't change a thing in terms of the language (outside of cutting stuff for time), it's just Shakespeare is much easier to follow in performance than he is to read. TL;DR Shakespeare wrote in Early Modern English, not Old English, and you can't really "translate" him since Early Modern English and Modern English are very similar to each other.
Adam, as a musician, I’d be interested in your thoughts on Spielberg’s West Side Story. Thought it was weirdly well-done; enough so to justify the remake.
Best and saddest ending ever museum? Yes, The Mist definitely belongs there. I'd also like to add, of all things, the James Bond film most people probably haven't seen (No, the original Casino Royale isn't included), On Her Majesty's Secret Service - which also happens to be one of the best Bond films - and perhaps the most Bond of Bond films. It also features the best "Bond girl" of all, who matches JB step-for-step, if not being more than a match for him. Check it out. Oh, it's dated - but in all the right ways (if you're in that type of mood). The ending, though. One of the best. Just... yes.
thanks whoever the timestamp man is edit: Everyone like Chrisistasty1’s comment and thank them for their generous timestamp ...Or Kaizir’s Ok it seems everyone is doing this so I can’t thank everyone
I literally had the exact same feeling about French dispatch, the first story is incredible and it's kind of disappointing the other 2, especially the second story, weren't nearly as good
Titane is a possible Oscar contender for international feature, but unfortunately it has already been snubbed at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice
Outstanding show! Here's some films I recommend. The Campaign. The Crazies. The Equalizer 1&2. Under the silver lake. Barton fink. The Wrestler. Run all night. Repo Men. Stuber. Uncut Gems. The Untouchables. Wild things. O brother where art thow. Primal. Mortal Engines. Righteous kill.
I'm pretty sure the animated action set piece of the third story in the French dispatch does have artistic intent since it was very clearly stated to be a comic strip drawn by the newspaper cartoonist brought to life. Considering how every part of this movie is supposed to represent a part of a newspaper, it seemed pretty in theme.
I didn't know anything about the "spoilers" of A Cop Movie and found it really confusing to follow along, I feel like you're expected to have heard that the characters are based on real cops played in the movie by actors, except there's also moments where the actors are themselves and the real cops also show up and the narrators are them, not the actors playing them.
Why Edgar Wright made Last Night Soho? Easy Adam. He loves horror movies and 60s british pop culture (007, The avengers, Audrey Hepburn, etc). There. It's not so difficult.
I've said this before in the Sardonicast but in Last Night in Soho's defense, it's not a bland or "by-the-numbers" horror film. I really liked this film, and I've watched it 3 times. I was invested throughout the film, even if the 3rd act wasn't all that strong. It's not a scary, like a jumpscare-y movie, but it's more so the 'reality' of it what makes it scary or darker than most thrillers. It's showing you the dangers of romanticizing the past and it's a really nice to see a movie that tackles that. The film is a very stylish movie, the soundtrack is amazing, and it's nice that Edgar Wright is trying something different and still maintaining his style. I prefer this movie over Scott Pilgrim vs The World, it's Wright's latter half of films he's directed but I still like all his films regardless cause they are all uniquely entertaining. I still hold it as a 7.5/10, it's not great, but a really good, and unique film. I still can't wait to get it when it comes out on DVD.
Jumpscares arent scary any one who wants them doesnt understand horror. The first 2 acts were good for the most part the 3rd really dropped the ball. Its not creepy or unsettling the humour isnt on the same level as his best stuff. The look of the modern day stuff isnt as great as the 60s stuff. And I think matt smith was wasted to be honest. The acting was good the use of music was great but aside from the cinematography in the 60s stuff it was a step down for him. What makes it unique to you?
Arcane never caught me. I thought it was very mediocre. Just watched it because of all the hype surrounding it. The animations are top notch, but that's about it for me (and obviously not enough for a whole series). I'm interested in your honest take, Adam.
Your at your best when you really like something but unfortunately that's also when you don't want to give too much away, thus the quick reviews, a mixed bag .
I think the Oscar will probably go to Stewart, but I also don't really get Spencer. It's easily one of the most beautiful films ever shot, but I really struggle to understand what they're trying to say about Diana. That she's a victim of circumstance, sure, but the film's determination to present her as if she was just a regular schmo before she became a Royal feels really disingenuous to me. Also it honestly has one of the most goofy-ass endings I've ever seen.
Tbh a couple turn offs for me when it comes to your streams/longer form content would be a) how easily you get triggered by chat (come on, you should know better) and b) how preachy you can get. You know movies, you're good at talking about them, I think it'd help if you stuck to that.

He reviews a lot of mainstream films, what's the point of doing more? Everyone already knows about them. Isn't it better to help people find films that they otherwise wouldn't?

When does he talk about bojack?
"It's disgusting when people treat the royal family as celebrities" Yes Adam!
Scoot's doxxing was intentional revenge for not having kiss cam during the oscars this year.
But when's the next Plinkett review?
I know this isn't the consensus, but my favorite PTA film is The Master and Jonny Greenwood's score for that film is one of my favorite scores of all time.
I mean PTA has said in an interview that The Master is his favourite movie of his.
My favourite of his would be Magnolia though.
Btw was PTA mentioned in this stream? I’m not sure where your comment comes from
@@DevyanshBahri Adam was talking about scores Jonny Greenwood did for recent movies and mentioned some of the scores he did for PTA.
Whaddya know, it’s my fave too.
I'd say Master is one of his more beloved films for sure. My personal favourite is Punch Drunk Love.
1:40:56 best day ever 🥺
Honestly that was one of the worst criticisms I've heard for a movie in quite some time
@@dankthomas2878 yeah I usually like yms but I was somewhat confused by that take

i think this should be a regular thing for the channel. it's fun and new and hopefully these kinds of annual quickie catchups aren't as time consuming. this format could also be used to check on movies that might've been used throughout the year but didn't have a dedicated quickie for.

Small language/history/Shakespeare lesson:
Currently attending grad school to study Shakespeare and I nerd out about this stuff, so a small correction: Shakespeare did not write in Old English, he wrote in Early Modern English. For comparison, here are the first two lines of Beowulf, untranslated from Old English -
Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
Here are the first two lines of text from Macbeth, "untranslated" from Early Modern English -
FIRST WITCH
When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
Just... yes.

Titane is a possible Oscar contender for international feature, but unfortunately it has already been snubbed at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice
I would love a Best Actress for Agathe Rousselle.
A three hour quickie?
Outstanding show! Here's some films I recommend. The Campaign. The Crazies. The Equalizer 1&2. Under the silver lake. Barton fink. The Wrestler. Run all night. Repo Men. Stuber. Uncut Gems. The Untouchables. Wild things. O brother where art thow. Primal. Mortal Engines. Righteous kill.
That.... is not at all how I thought Scoot would look XD.
I didn't know anything about the "spoilers" of A Cop Movie and found it really confusing to follow along, I feel like you're expected to have heard that
the characters are based on real cops played in the movie by actors, except there's also moments where the actors are themselves and the real cops also show up and the narrators are them, not the actors playing them.
hearing adam say "danganronpa" makes me fear but in a good way
Why Edgar Wright made Last Night Soho? Easy Adam. He loves horror movies and 60s british pop culture (007, The avengers, Audrey Hepburn, etc). There. It's not so difficult.

I love spencer one of my favorite films from last year

I was messing with my speaker wires for the entire intro lmao
To me the story sounded like run of the mill fanfiction or those "best selling" thriller books housewives like to read for their book clubs.
@@paulelroy6650 to be fair, I don’t believe that the modern stuff is supposed to look as good as the 60s stuff

Your at your best when you really like something but unfortunately that's also when you don't want to give too much away, thus the quick reviews, a mixed bag .
Who is Scoot? Editor?
U may like Cyrus. Sleepy hollow. The 9th gate.

Adum, take your time eating... and chew a bit more. Overall better digestion and food absorption.
Tbh a couple turn offs for me when it comes to your streams/longer form content would be a) how easily you get triggered by chat (come on, you should know better) and b) how preachy you can get. You know movies, you're good at talking about them, I think it'd help if you stuck to that.
