- A Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services report has sounded the alarm over what it calls unlawful conditions prisoners are subjected to at some facilities. Retired Constitutional Court Judge Edwin Cameron and Correctional Services national spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo weigh in.

Imagine what that can do to educate , feed and school children.

South Africa or its leaders wants to please everybody. Go to Lesotho and see for yourself how are prisoners treated. Crime is zero percent. I am not suggesting ill treatment of prisoners but some of the things needs to be enforced.

I used to think like that until i see what is happening in the Senzo Meyiwa case.... Police acting as Mafias, framing people and pinning them with things they didn't do just because they are Police. Now imagine being wrongfully accused to fit the narrative of the investigating officer and you are subjected to this conditions being clueless about what you are arrested for. Sad.

Treat South African citizens and the money through taxes with dignity. Citizens don’t have water access, roads falling apart, health care yet prisoners have all of that paid for and it’s “their dignity” that in itself is a crime in our opinions

But wasn't Thabo Bester cruel when killing another prisoner and set him alight in his cell so that the authoroties may think it was him before escaping? Where do you draw the line called inhumanity, by putting a prisoner who performed inhumane activities in solitary confinement and cry about him afterwards, or allow that same prisoner to again perform inhumane activities likeThabo Bester did and call it alright to do so. That is ridiculous. In that case, where does humanity start and where does it end? If you rape an innocent person or murder another person you already lost your humanity and claim to humanity. People here are forgetting that prison is a rehab center not a slaughter Center. If the prisoner is mentally injured by inhumane prison confinement , they will become worse after leaving jail. Lets not forget that these prosoners will leave jail and come back to our societies later on. So their mental health is important. I am not speaking for 5 star hotels but 5vstar prison with humanely conditions for rehabilitation

This are prisoners we talking about this man he must just shutup and enjoy his life at his retirement home, This prisoners do no have rights, they lost them when they decided to commit crime ,They should be renovating all the govenment buildings and work in farms everyday they should work. The prison cells should be seach everyday when coming back from work no food from outside ones your proceeded and sentenced.

This is crazy. These are very DANGEROUS convicted criminals and they belong there. Their victims live under permanent solitary confinement because they live in fear that actions of ppl like this judge will le😮ad to those criminals escaping and threat of being retaliated against. Thabo bester escaped because he was afforded too many luxuries. These criminals gave up the right to be treated humanely the day they flouted the law. They are lucky they get what they are getting now. If you think prison life is bad here, maybe he should visit Siberian jails, Riker's island, Alcatraz and the Black Dolphin prison. Now this is what hell in cell means. Inhumane prison conditions in SA😂😂😂 those prisoners get to brag abt soft life on Instagram 😂😂😂.
I agree that solitary confinement is against human dignity.... however I think if they are grouped with other prisoners I think other problems will manifest, maybe the prison officials can deal with that problem when it arise...24/9/2024

Do remember these are human beings. Yes, they committed crimes, but it is the duty of the state to rehabilitate offenders. Also, they were judged against man's law, not God's Law. If we are civilized, should we not make every effort to rehabilitate them?
Justice Cameron is quite correct. Crime really only happens when people have been subjected to extreme poverty, caused by a government that refuses to treat citizens with respect. Most criminals have never had a job, never had a home, never had opportunities. Can you imagine what despair can do? It's sad for victims of crime, but most offenders are also victims of rape, poverty and inhumane living conditions. Shame on this South African Government.

1. I believe lawfulness is imperative in the prison system, it’s called a system because it seeks to achieve something.. which is to rehabilitate. If it fails to do so and instead acts as a school for criminals to graduate in crime who’s winning ? No one, not us the public and certainly not the criminals because they will only end up back there. Fighting crime has to happen inside our prisons as well, so lawfulness is imperative

Our justice system then will defend the prisoner on technicalities and get them off punishment. The justice system need to be fixed. Advocates and attorney are charging huge fees to fight technicalities and not the cause.
Whoever is running this country should just come clean with us, they want this place to be a crime den. Everyone who's doing crime here has more rights than law abiding citizens.
The problem is that prison is meant to be a rehab center, and keeping these guys in solitary confinement can only make them worst criminals. Then, at some point, they get released, and they are expected to fit into society. It takes time to adjust from that situation, so we can't call prison rehabilitation centers.

Inmates are not taken in isolation on admission except if you've been trialing in a small prison that is mostly used for Remand Detainees,then you sentence is classed as maximum,then you'll be taken to isolation awaiting transfer to a maximum prison
