Awesome tutorial as usual! but just incase someone else runs int the issue i had with "serial" not under the advanced options. it is here "My serial was in raspi_config, then 5. Interfacing options. Then p6 serial" but works the same. i paused your video and went hunting for the same line
You are like my go to guy for anything raspberry pie
Shane Holten eta is the guy for pi.

HOW TO ADD ON/OFF BUTTON - ruclips.net/video/4nTuzIY0i3k/видео.html
Can you recommend a fan for the RP3? Thanks for the awe
some videos
Exactly what I needed on my bday :)
A vid on adding the button to your FLIIFC case would be wonderful.
I have one problem... I have done everything like this and your previous videos have stated. I am using a case with a small fan which connects to pins 4&6 like in your diagram. However, the fan always stays on, regardless if the Pi is powered down. The fan only turns off when the Pi is unplugged. Do I need to add some additional script to power down those pins when the Pi is off?
Does it work on the Pi4 too?

Great video! ordered my button and messed with the script and other button/led and got it working! thank you!
Question.... How did you mount the button from the video? Also how did you achieve the blue glow around the button?
Thank you i really enjoy all your videos!
That's the same questions I have.
what wires did you end up getting for the button? I ordered the silver led button, but it didn't come with any wires.
larock0wns first I used 26awg wires but they were too bulky because they were hitting the gpio pins. Then I used 30awg lunar "wire wrapping" wire. I used a little circuit board with holes to solder and mount the switch. Then ran the wires to the pins and wire wrapped them. Then I used some rubber stubs to mount the board with strong double sided 3M tape.
"Latching or momentary power switch + reset switch + led" simply replace your shutdown.py script in /home/pi/scripts/
mega.nz/#!ctlyEAAL!7ho2WMlYa9p6j7ye_hLdfthjb_xjTegLZWHyTzXTyQY
Hey, widg8 do you mind if I make the video with this script? i will give you credit for sure!
can you show how i can hook up an LED to where it shows the read/write state of the pi. kinda like the occasionaly blinking green light
Or just Use a line of Code in the Config.txt to change the Pin of the gpio as a activity LED like the original on the board.
Just did it on my two Retropie Systems. It was nice and easy. Also surprisingly I had no terrible problems with doing it.
If I could ask You for a big favor, I'm considering building my retropie into the old console. Would You be able to create a guide on adding reset button functionality as well that instead of shutting Pi down would do soft reset? It would be handy to have both functional buttons.
Thanks! :)
Thanks so much, about to do a project like this myself. Very Helpful! I was lost on how to do this. Should we put a 300ohm resister on the LED?
For those that have asked in the comments, I can confirm that this works just fine using a lit arcade style button. Except that you use push-on spade type connectors, there no need to do anything other than follow the tutorial. You can, if need be, power a 12v LED using the 5v RPi supply--it just won't be as bright.
hello, i follwed your tutorial of the on/off switch, then this one of the led/fan. The problem is: the led and button works well. but the fan don´t turn off when the pi is turned off with the button script. Any ideas?
Thank you for your tutorials
Best regards
i'd like to know this too. my fan just stays on permanently :(
hi there
First of all can i say that your video is the only one i could find that actually helped me . May i ask though my led seems to ssitch on when the raspberry is powered up then goes off . Any ideas on why it doesnt stay on?
keep up the great vids
You need to enable serial. Go to Rasperry Pi config, then to Interfacing options. It should be in there.
ETA, this (and the power button add video) was spot on and super easy! I connected this to a white LED button with a Pi logo insert I printed on a transparency, and it looks and functions perfectly. As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!!
This is perfect for what I have in mind, adding a green LED to the front of the Apple IIe Platinum and a Rocker Switch towards the back (keep in mind that Apple Switching PSU's had those rocker switches and I'm going to be grabbing one just for wiring). though I have though of wiring the Rocker switch to the LED and both the LED and the Switch to the Pi. but as far as cases go I'm using a 1993 Apple IIe platinum.
First off thank you very much for the video!
Say I just want this led to turn on when the PI gets power. Couldn't I just wire off the 3.3v pin and ground? Is there an added benefit to coming off a gpio pin for power?
Newbie here so excuse my ignorance.
i not understand why have 2 button in code, power plus and reset plus my buttonh have in gpio 22 to 3,3V pins 15-17 used, led come somewere new gpio, about resistor and led go to about gpio gnd-21pin39-40.fan zero not need use. no have. i no know how change powerplus =3 and restplus =2 what hell this used only gpio 3 button have this need change gpio22 i used. how in code ??????? and why led is code pin 14 but true hardware pin have 8, this is totally wrong all, led need change gpio 21-gnd last row. but how work in code, i no understand this code anythink, not normal.
how i can use led in power, when i have retropie:shutdown.py gpio 22 have shutdown button but if shutdown raspi power no shutdown, need be led what show power have on or off. if my power switch has on led have raspi on,raspi must know when power have on ,because shutdown button code dont know when power need closed. need be led light if i shut down and then looking when i can shut power switch.
Could you please show how to add fan with the button and led?
i tried making a y harness for the led ground and switch negative to share a ground im running a raspberry pi 3b+ with i think a retropie 4.4 but the led stays lit when the shitdown button works... i use a pie with a fan and other then the ground for the switch and led rest seems right. any ideas?
What if I plan to use the serial lines to communicate with another device? Will this LED flicker?
Can you dou this with a non momentary switch, like a slide one?
I don't have the "A8 Serial" options when navigating to that location. I'm on a raspberry pi 3 running retropie 4.1.8. Is there another way to do this?
If you haven't found it yet I found it in the Raspi-Config menu under: 5 interfacing options in the first menu. Then turn on P6 serial.
Your the man!
monta well done, this is where it was for me, thank you
Thanks for the video. I have an issue, the button only works for power on the raspberry, not for shutdown
Can i use a push button or will it short out my pi?
Shame the fan doesn't turn off without removing the power to the pi
led without transistor?
Thanks for the detailed diagram / instructions. However, not sure what the purpose is since the LED turns off before services are finished and files still writing to SD. I thought the point was, to know when it's safe to disconnect power , etc..
Hi ETA Prime. Is there a chance of frying a Raspberrypie 3 by using a wrong kind of LED? Here is the specs to the LED I tried.....
Vf -2.6V Max
Vr - 5V max
Pd - 100mW max
Lf - 25mA Max
Lv - 5500 mcd typ
The guys at the electronic store I bought some stuff, thought this LED might work when I told them it was for a Pi.
I don't know if this LED fried my Pi or if I did something stupid and shorted out the pi's board.
I had followed your directions for a momentary switch and a LED, I had it working fine with a arcade button (huge), I want to get something that fits in the small plastic case for the Pi. I just ordered a new Pi, I'm in Canada so the Amazon stuff you have listed is either unavailable on the Canadian Amazon, or it will take over a month to get it from China (the button you use).
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Hey I'm curious will this work with a raspberry pi zero because I been trying to use pin 6 and 8 and I don't seem to get enough power and I try few different leds please any help would be greatly appteciated
what really threw me off in the instruction is that you vocally say gpio14 but 14 is grnd..
why is pin hole 8, UARTO_TX label as gpio14 in the diagram... @ 4:10
it just confuse me.. thanx 4 the vid
I made something very similar on other Rpi projects, but I made my script to expect a long press for shuting it down so nobody accidentaly press it. I guess I could make a short press to return to emulation station if I implement it in my personal retropie
Did I miss some script to turn on/off GPIO14 (as pin 8 is labeled on my breakout board)? What if we need UART0-TX (as pin 8 is labeled in your video) for something else?
Hi, I have a hifiberry dac attached to my pi and because of this I can't use pin 5 (GPIO3). GPIO2 and 18-21 also can't used. Can I use a different pin? and if so what changes do I need to do to the script?
So, for some reason, every time I enable the Serial for the LED, my Pi's N64 emulation suffers from lags and stutters. Any solution/workaround?
Edit: My power supply is 2.5, 5.0v.
Couldn't you just wire the LED to 3.3V and Ground? (Red and Yellow are usually 1.9-2.1V, so a resistor would be needed) Blue/Green/White use around 3.2-2.4V, so you could essentially use it without a resistor. However, that is dependent on your LED specs. for example, for a 3.2V 20mA LED, you would only need a 5ohm resistor.
Oh, and how did you adhere the button to the FLIRC case?
The Raspberry Pi keeps the GPIO pins powered even when asleep, so the Power light would still be on.
AH. I was unaware. thanks
If you are steady handed and good at soldering, you could rig up a header, attached to the activity LED (Green) and wire that to your button's LED, it'd blink but it'd work. Not recommended because since it's surface mount, very easy to screw something up.
i'd rather use a DO... the blinking would drive me nuts lol
how did you get a "Game & Watch" emulator? I've not seen that before.
EDIT ..... never mind, just found your video about it, thanks :)
I'm a little confused as far as the links. If you use the silver button, you won't need the 12 Volt Led Packs, since the button has the Led already, correct? And what wires do you suggest to purchase for the button? Excellent video.
I read that that the LED attached to a serial pin will turn off about five seconds before the activity light stops blinking (i.e. it's not safe to unplug immediately after this serial LED turns off).
Do you know if it´s possible to use a locking switch? Rebuilding an old NES with RetroPie, and want the original buttons to work. :)
how do you know if your LED is low power or not?
The circuit with button and LED works fine but I tried breadboarding the one with the fan five different ways and it just doesn't work...
Thanks for this. Question, even when it is shutdown and the LED and fan are off it's still not really "off" is it? There is still power going to the board. Is that ok to leave plugged in for weeks on end? Either way this method is better than an inline switch that just cuts power, and you don't have to mess around the UI to shut down.
I am very interested in doing this, but adding the fan into the mix like you have illustrated in the diagram. Does it power the fan with 3.3v or 5v? I am just confused a little because all tutorials I have seen for adding a fan hook it up to one of the voltage pins, and yours does not. Thanks for this wonderfully informative video as always!
Can the wiring handle a 1W LED ? want run a IR 850nm for the Camera. Thanks!
Where do you add code to change the brightness of the LED as it is much too bright? I know it can be done somewhere by changing the speed of the LED flickering. Thanks
What are the 16mm buttons listed for? Does the button you have linked that you used come with everything you need (except for the wires)
Don't you need to add a 750OHM resistor for the LED otherwise it'll eventually burn out?
Hi ETA Prime. thanks for the tutorial. im totally new to this. Which is the link to purchase the red and black wiring? And which led are you using?
I'm not sure why you didn't cover the button you featured at the beginning. You said, you drilled a hole and mounted the button, but how did you mount the button? And then what cables and which leads are you using on the button? I ordered the silver ones specified in the video description section. Thanks.
ETA, for the fan update, I assume that the fan shuts off (powered by 5v on Pin 4)? Do you have to do anything to get the power to shut off to the fan?
Thanks for the video, I am waiting on my fan and button to arrive - I may have to add an LED now too.
5:20 You say the led needs to be plugged into GPIO 14, yet you plug yours into GPIO 8 and pointed at GPIO 8 while you did it.
It is GPIO 14. GPIO 14 sits on Pin 8. It's a difference. raspberrypi.ws/pin8
GPIO 14 (UART0_TXD) is fisic pin 8. Look www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2012/06/simple-guide-to-the-rpi-gpio-header-and-pins/
Wanted to thank you. Your guides helped me get my NES power button, LED and fan working
awsome video again. think you can add a link to the case you have. Also is LED necessary? doesn't bottom already come with it? thx
Since the LED's are 12V, what is your view on LED strip lights (not the long ones)?
Does this also work with odroid xu4 somehow?
Case link does not work
I need to do this :)
Question: I want to install new layouts/themes for ES and Attract but for some reason when i connect to my RPI 3 wirelessly i cannot seem to find either layout/theme folders for ES or AM.
can you PLEASE tell me how to achieve this...I am a very quick learner.
just what I needed. mine is going into the base of a t-800 terminator scull I printed. I'm going to use 2 so that when it's on, the eyes will be lit up red.
Hello, would you have any tips on how to do this with the original SNES case button? or does it follow the same logic? thank you
isnt there a different script for an on off switch vs momentary switch? because i have bought a power button that has an led backlight but its not a momentary switch but rather an onoff switch for retropie?
+ETA PRIME how do you record the screen of your RPi, do you just use a capture card on your computer?
Hey. Would you be able to make one showing how to set up the kano light ring with button? My dad got the set for Christmas and I'm turning it into a retro station and really want to use the light and button on it.
ETA ..... does the with fan wiring mean that the power switch and led need to share the same ground? or does it just mean that they need any grounds to work? thanks
I have a fan and a led plug in also and they dont turn off when the I press the power button and your shutdown.python code is triggered...only the raspberry pi shutsdown but the rest stays powered
Your related videos cover up the wiring diagrams in the video at the end. Might be worth a quick edit so the video links show up after the wire diagrams.
I've tried this and my LED lights up bright during startup but then dims, it's worth noting that it also has a dim glow when my pi is 'off'. I'm not sure why it's doing this as I've done exactly what's shown in the video!
same problem here I hope there is a solution
You need to enable serial. Go to Rasperry Pi config, then to Interfacing options. It should be in there.
Man, you saved my day! I was searching the enable serial option everywhere! Now i found it and my LED works fine! Thank you so much! :D
Is there anyway to have the added LED turn off after the green light on the pi has stopped blinking?
Can 2 of these power led's be run in parallel? I'd like to have a power led on both sides of my case.
great video as always but, your links for the cases don't work. it shows something else.
Followed your setup to the T but the power led only lights up for a few secs during boot them it goes dim. After shutdown the led is still on but dim as well.
If I just fallow your steps on the other video for my power button can I just add a fan to that and not worry about this video cuz I don't want a led.
can u get the power switch to proper shutdown with power boost 1000c from adafruit.
Great video! ordered my button and messed with the script and other button/led and got it working! thank you!
Question.... How did you mount the button from the video? Also how did you achieve the blue glow around the button?
Thank you i really enjoy all your videos!
How can I turn on a led when connecting a USB device to raspberry pi 3?
Can i use a small LED Strip instead of the single LED with this method?
Problem. When i boot up, the led lights up for about 3 seconds and goes out. i thought it was because the blue led was drawing to much power so i switched to a red one, still nothing.
i love your videos, i would be pretty much lost without you.
Im having the same issue cant figure out why.
You need to enable serial. Go to Rasperry Pi config, then to Interfacing options. It should be in there.
I enabled serial, it still only stays on for a few seconds on startup then turns off.
My raspberry Pi 3 came with a red power led installed out of the box.
Thanks for this. (And the power button one). Was there any particular reason why you chose the GND so far away? Why not use the same one the button uses (or a closer one)? GND is GND, surely? ;)
I was also thinking, why not get the python shutdown script to turn on an LED when it launches using a GPOI pin. And turn it off on the shutdown?
I couldn't imagine life without eta prime
I don't appear to have that many options. they stop at G6 in advanced options. so I cannot open serial.
any ideas?
This is not in my advanced options. I have no idea how to get this LED to stay on. It pops on at boot, then shuts off.
Will I be able to wire the original Nes power button to use as a on and off switch???
If you don't understand the diagram and need to look at the video… please don't do it…
Hello, any chance to use this button with openelec kodi?
Thank you for including the fan AND power switch diagram. i have seen videos for how to do both separately and they all seem to use 6 GND.
Hey man, great video. got my button wired and working... but how do you mount through the case?
Where can I get the little tiny wire connectors that will fit the board?
Is there a way to get an LED to mimic the green LED on the board?
I don't have serial on raspi config
I was wondering if this will work in libreElec. Thanks
Mann, ive spend hours trying to figure out why the "TXD" pin didnt go high when the system was on!!!
Thanks alot !! I can sleep thight again 👍🏻😀
so you don't need a script for the light just plug it in?
dont you need a resistor in series with led to stop possible damage
until 2:20 i thought you are speaking 'Cereal' lol
The amount of videos your yours that I have NEEDED! Hands down best info, great tutorials, and video/ sound quality is spot on.. I'm curious about some of your equipment. What HDMI capture device do you use? And what mic do you use? Thanks for the wonderful videos.
ETA PRIME You're a bad man! I follow all of your RPI tutorials. Thank you for all that you do
I cannot seem to get this to work on the Pi3. The LED will momentarily light up when it's booting, but once it's done, the LED turns off. I'm using OSMC.
You need to enable serial. Go to Rasperry Pi config, then to Interfacing options. It should be in there.
the menu option for serial is not on the retropie anymore.
