- For University of Colorado classics professor Travis Rupp, the best way to bring ancient civilizations back to life is in a pint glass. Rupp works on a special projects team at Avery Brewing Company to brew beers the way that ancient Egyptians, Peruvians and Vikings did. While these beers are certainly different from their modern-day descendants, at the end of the day, a cold one the ancestral way is always a good thing. Cheers.

The thing I love about alcohol and history is
1. Almost every cocktail has a story.
2. Humans haven't fundamentally changed all that much over time. Back in 1682 people still enjoyed a good beer, they still talked to each other about their crushes and exes, and they still walked into rooms, forgot why they walked into that room, left the room, and then remembered why they went into the other room in the first place.
When I grow up I want to be a Beerchaeologist...
Beerchaeologist
Space Chimpanzee a beer geologist
Yeah that's a subset of beerthropology right?
Brewer .
beerologist
I'm not a beer drinker, but I still found this video fascinating.
if you don't like beer i feel genuinely bad :(
It's not like I don't like it. I have tasted it a little bit for some events. Don't wanna be the square.
But, I know myself very well I willl get addicted to it so I had to stop while I can. So, I don't drink it if there is no real reason.
Ain't gonna ruin my life over drinks. I'm not going to fool myself saying "nah, I'm strong enough. I deserved some fun anyway".
It's been notoriously known drinks are the place to hide from the truth.
My life won't be easy. If something bad happens I need to recover fast instead of running away. I'm not going to make a place to runaway. I have to force myself to face the problems.
Personally I'm a rum man. I don't drink beer because the beer here is very bad. But if there was a supply of good beer I would swith
Give this man a beer.
Major L hahahaha
I think he's got that handled
Your videos always seem like a trailer which I wanna see the whole movie of!
The problem with brewing a 1500 year old beer is that you need their yeast, its far from the same otherwise. You need the way the yeast come to being and then have that kind of yeast with the beer you make.
CDarkSilver Well natural yeast is found everywhere in the world and species of yeast in different regions are pretty well documented, especially if they're used for fermenting so it's not hard to import. He even says in the video that certain cultures used bread yeast, which couldn't be easier to find, you mix some flour with water and leave it in a bowl for 2-3 days and you have a starter for your ancient beer... or bread.
Daniel Marinov yea true but the changes of the weather and what's in the air is very different depending on country aswell as food and allot of other variables that change so even with lots of research it's still close to impossible to get it right.
Even though allot of research could put you close to the yeast of different ancient cultures aswell as making beer of their kind.
Seems about right, it's probably alot of small-scale experimentation and luck to find the right one. The closest they can get is probably finding a somewhat regional brewing manual which describes the process of making the starting culture and limiting the possible yeast species from there. It's definitely not an easy job, but it's awesome and you can tell the dude has a ton of passion and love for his craft.
The show "Beermasters" on History went to Egypt and extracted some yeast from near the great pyramids for their Egyptian themed beer. "Beermasters" was a cool show, it was about Dogfish head brewery.
Of course, you will never get it exactly right, we are 1500 years in the future after all.
I love how you upload constantly! There's always something to watch!
i wouldn't be surprised if this guy'd dig up some Aztec or Mesopotamian Beer/Ale recipes in the near future. Cheers!!!
Aztec or precolombian alcohol is still drunk today in Mexico.
Tradition of making never died.
Its just very different and an enquired taste.
Whenever I see a new video by y'all i get so excited :D
DillTV Ikr
They're so damn interesting
When I was a kid about 1992? I was cleaning out an addict with a friend of mine for his parents and we found a 6-pack of 1920 something World's Fair beer. It was amazing to find.
How'd it taste? Cheers! 🍻
@@69Jackjones69 my friends parents ended up keeping it I don't know whatever happened to it. But I know they didn't drink it. and I don't think they sold it???

i used to live in boulder and i miss avery so much!!! they really did/do some cool beers that i wish more people could experience.
Next time I find myself in Colorado, this is one place I'll certainly be stopping in at.
would love to know how Egyptian beer was made considering the extremely vague understanding we have of that culture
Thanks to the Rosetta Stone we now know lol
I've been to the Avery brewing place before! I saw him there because there's also a restaurant and you can look down at where they are brewing. And it is in boulder Colorado
History + Beer. This is my man
I wasn't aware Ancient Egyptians had beer. I had assumed that beer as we understand it was a European thing, and that the alcohols made back in the day were composed of fermented fruit so were more like wines, ciders, or meads (considering the ancient Egyptians loved honey, mead in particular for them). I'm curious where he got the research for his recipe from.
he does say he is more interested in what HE would be drinking, if he were alive at that time. what we know as ancient brew is what the upper class would be drinking.
6 years later, yes you're technically correct. Beer is an ale that is brewed with hops. These days though, beer and ale are used almost interchangeably because the features which once delineated beer from ale have been blended.
Wow so this is my dream come true ! I always wanted to make medieval beer that Sue Perkin's drank in the show "supersizer go Medieval".
Exactly what I'm in the mood to see 😯
Imagine in 1000 years from now some future civilization will be attempting to recreate miller lite
Hahahahah
I,love ancient food I,mad a stwe from 1760 last week it's amazing and doest not cost alot to make
Beer-archeologicalist. Love the idea!
beer archeologist.... coolest title I've seen in a while
I want to get drunk with some OG beers
I love this !!!! I would love to see you Brew it the way the ancients did! No modern Technology.
Avery's Sour Apricot is one of my favorites …. I'd be really interested to try an 'ancient' beer assuming they aren't bitter. Didn't sound like it.
This is Awesome!
Mmmm. I wish I had money to travel and get to this brewry. I love Avery. Hopefully one day I will go there.
It's so good that somebody keeps this alive.
Are these ancient beers available to purchase or taste at this Brewery?
Just wow! 😊
YOU ARE SO COOL!!! DANG
i really look up to you!
I been looking for an ale thats game of thrones style, figured i would have to make it myself. A gruit seems the closest to it. Thinking of using mugwort and cloves with an oat wort. Any thoughts on adding molasses? I want it as traditional as i can get. "So thick you can nearly chew it"
this is amazing
The Viking beer looks like Mjød (honney beer)
where can I buy this?
finally found a great chanel ^^
Beer archaeologist , wow why did i never think of that?!
Where can I acquire these ancient brews?
Were is his bar? I wanna try some of his when im older......Im only 11 ._.
But delicious in what way? Is it sweet or not-as-strong as most beers? Would younger people (Hypothetically) willingly drink it?
'Viking beer'? Isn't it called mead?
I personally would like 5-6 minute long videos

I don't wanna be a drinker when I'm old enough but I'd like to try the Viking one
What does it taste like
not gonna lie, the beer is most likely older than he is...
Scribble thanks for the truth and the probability
stupid comment even if he was drinking 1100 year old beer. the key word is recreating
@@burntcharcoal3 ikr!? This dude is an Idiot. 😡😡 😡😠 😠
If i was an ancient Egyptian i'd want to drink future beer... like a refreshing Coors Banquet ;-)
I stopped drinking alcohol three years ago. After this video, I regret it
With beer like that, I would definitely work on the pyramids................
"It unifies people"
It also caused a murder by axe in a tavern and made a man so drunk that he fell into a well and died. But I would still drink it
To quote this guy who makes beer all day for a living"I like to have a glass of ancient Egyptian beer at the end of a hard day's work" is easy proof that he's not joking about this stuff. To go even further into my own research this must've been some hardy beer (even though I've never tasted it) based off of the supposed wages of the standard pyramid builder, which was just two gallons of beer! I think this must've been the majority of the food and water a human needed besides certain treats probably high in vitamin C since they would've all died of scurvy unless the beer itself had the Vitamin C to supplement the loss of the electrolyte due to alcohol consumption. I must say! They had it figured out one way or another!
5000 BC : Egyptians make beer
5000 BC 2am: Egyptian women start to look better😁
Could someone help me find where I can buy this beer? I wanted to create a an ancient Mesopotamian brew in college but didn't have the time, research or resources. I just want to have another connection to my routes other than my family's cooking. Hopefully I'll get a chance one day. Fun fact, the ancient Mesopotamians would drown the brewmaster in the brew he created if it became a spoiled batch. Beer was like gold back then.
You can use the hymn to ninkasi, who was the godddess of beer in ancient mesepotamia. They literally documented the process and it's very easy to make.
I need...to...go....here!
I would really like to try some
Now I want to have each one of those beers, and I don't even drink.
1:20 I like to visit that bar.
So ancient Egyptian beer actually tastes good WOW , in a way it doesn't surprise me the Egyptians were far more advanced then we give them credit for .
got a history assignment coming up? lets go drinking! its for "research" i promise...
Hey, mom, I wanna be a beer archaeologist when I grow up!

omg :) Another reason to move to colorado!
My dream job!
I want some beer now.
Hold my beer...

Wonder how they all would taste warm
I WONDER IF VILOD IS STILL MAKING THAT MEAD WITH JUNIPER BERRIES MIXED IN.
HAHAHAHA why is that the first thing that popped up in my mind.
Skyrim?
What you do at work? Drink beer.
And on your free time? Drink beer.
If your gonna brew ancient beer....you should have ancient style cups...like the viking beer would be served on a ale horn.
The Viking one is called mjöd/mjød (depending on which country the vikings came from)
www.averybrewing.com/beers/ragnarsdrapa
Getting people drunk for over 1,000 years. :D
Ah man i wish i could taste them all 😢
Thought they found beer that was brewing for 1,100 years old
Consider which came first.
Beer or bread?
I don't like alcohol but I'm willing to try ancient beer I bet it tastes a lot different
Wait, beer archeology is a thing? Why the frak didn't I know this in college!?!?
you didn't even let him plug his brewery? if I didn't drink craft beer like it's my job I wouldn't have recognized that symbol to know his brewery is called Avery they make really good beers btw
Other than the very distracting and doofy music, this was really interesting; what an amazing guy.
Field trip
He's quite woofy too
I want some
Henbane beer?
Finding it hard to get on board with "ancient beer" being brewed modernly?
Wow
So no video on the process of brewing said beer? Sad
I thought he was drinking a beer from 1100 years ago
The only problem is how thirsty this makes me.
"Brewing ancient beer on a modern system is quite challenging" ... no shit
Not all heroes wear capes.
Dunno about a rusty nail keeping my beer in the cask
