In china in Bao pu zi by Ge Hong, it was not to call his ancestors, but the Liu Jia(six jia spirits) astrological category
Katori shinto DOES use it for mental/spiritual preparedness primarily, Otake sensei says clearly in his Deity and the Sword, it is to get into the state of Muga (selflessness)

    • @AntonyCummins
      @AntonyCummins  3 года назад

Does he say use Kuji in or Kuji kiri for metal things. And thank you for the add on for six spirits

@@AntonyCummins my pleasure! He says: “By linking these nine signs, the will becomes unified, all worldly thoughts fall away, and the self is extinguished.”
No serious book has said/instructed to do such and such with kuji, but more like the use of it would be such and such, suppose someone is initiated.
Same kinda thing is said about Muga in his more recent book

So kuji in is a common thing for anyone darn, I really like the mystic image it gives to the ninja. I'll still use it to banish demons though hehe LoL. 😄

I recently purchased a valuable tome on kuji kiri. It’s a lot to take on. Direction to face, mantra, bodhisatva, purification, visualization, etc.. I bumped my head on the Sanskrit.

The Kuji-In is a ritual used to gain spiritual power ninjas do this as part of their tradition

You're telling me that there's no such thing as ninja bikes and ninja blenders? You're crushing my soul, Antony.
First time I heard the "Words of Power" was when you mentioned them during your video "What was a Samurai Battle Like?"
Now this is obviously a very different context to a superstitious hike in the mountains or any other sort of travel.
Was it used for the same reasons on the battlefield (e.g. ward off evil, divine protection)? Or did it's meaning take on a different implication considering the circumstances (e.g. strength, courage, invulnerability)?
Would they still recite it secretly before battle or was it clamoured as a war cry?
Just trying to establish a better understanding of the application. Cheers!

There are a few odd video glitches in the video I think, around 3:15 - 3:30 especially. Maybe it's on my end though. Either way it doesn't really hurt the viewing experience but might be something to keep an eye out for.
I still find the idea of the Kuji Kiri hand things fascinating, even if they aren't historically accurate.

It's impressive, there are so may mistakes in the way the ninjas were being represented in culture. It seems that they got almost everything wrong.

    Hi Anthony,
where can i find information on how to do kuji-kiri with the sword?
For example, in muso shinden shigenobu ryu, and in most of the koryu of iaido and kenjutsu, at the end of the noto, there is a movement of the right hand on the tsuka, which comes directly from the kuji-kiri, and it is to cut the connection with the dead enemy.
I would like to know more about this influence of kuji in iaido styles.
thank you very much in advance, best regards
