I haven't watched clannad in like over 10 years , and while my young adolescent self couldn't relate with Tomoya or completely understand some situations, the tennis scene hit differently watching it years later. I love this scene so much, Ryou knew to not let her sister get in between Tomoya and Nagisa by the time the match started, because not only was the tennis match starting, but the match for Tomoya's love was almost over. While helping Nagisa to the infirmary, he didn't even acknowledge the sisters or Kotomi because he was so focused on Nagisa. This silently tells us who was the most important to Tomoya, and it was done beautifully. Kyou and Ryou crying was hard to watch, but Kyou's initial denial written all over her face was done so well... I love this show
The sad thing about this scene isn't that Kyou was in denial. She has been in love with Tomoya ever she met him. She was simply to afraid to confess her love to him because they were such great friends. Which is why in her route the reason she was so eager to help her sister out is because she figured that way she and Tomoya could always be friends without ever having to cross that line. However her love for him was way too much for her at that point. The reason she was crying was simply because she knew she had a very solid chance to win him over at any time. It was simply her fear that didn't allow her to cross that line. So her heart legitimately broke in that moment because she probably lost a friend and a potential lover. Tomoya knew in that moment when he slapped away that other tennis players hand that he had made his decision. And not only had he made his decision he did it in front of everyone. There was nothing to say. Nagisa was everything to him.
The subtleties in both the anime and visual novel make it an amazing story, as you grow older, you understand it more and more, and appreciate more and more things about it. That scene was one of the best done scenes in the anime, they did a truly incredible job with the anime and visual novel. A truly wonderful adaptation.
It's true, but the show does such a good job showing that you're always gonna be strong enough to get through it :) That's why I love Clannad so much; sadness is always accompanied by happiness, just like in life~
I’m amazed that people still watch Clannad up until this day. I watched Clannad last year on July 2021 and now I fully understand why it’s great. Clannad is my number 1 favorite from Key, I’ll play the visual novel one of these days. Also this comment was posted on April 2022

Yup, I also watched Clannad in my last year of high school. I related a lot to Tomoya and fell in love with the story/world of Clannad. It reminds me a lot of high school. Will always be my #1 anime.

Clannad is one of the VN that doesn't affect the first girl flopped syndrome. Key' Clannad pretty much done the best in making their first girl heroine "Nagisa" to be a best girl.
They were both originally made as Visual Novels(computer novels) by the same company, Key. They were also both animated by the same studio, Kyoto Animation, KyoAni for short. Air is the other series made by Key and that was also animated by KyoAni.
I burst into tears every time I see something that ties in with Clannad, because I miss it so much!!! ;s P.S. This was punctuated correctly in honor of Clannad (^ w ^)...KAWAIIIIIIII!!!
This song has to be one of my favorite soundtracks from Clannad along with the Afterstory theme song because they both have somewhat of a nostalgic feel to it. Like, you can listen to the song and get the summary of the whole anime.. or something like that XD

@tomasusan I thought that too, but then showed it to a friend who hasn't seen Clannad and they agreed it does give an almost eerie feel of sadness. It's strange. But I agree, episode 18 may have something to do with it for me, because I think of all the other routes and the possibilities being lost. (It's worse when you're like me and have played each route on the Visual Novel of this and know what happens with each character.)
Well yeah, He thinks that there's too much eps used for Fuko's and Kotomi's arc. And i also agree. I wish they wouldve put that much into Tomoyo's and Kyou's arc
