  • There are some things to remember when painting evening light. One, is that the light is a bit more orange, and another is that the colors are a bit more cooler.

Thanks for teaching how to interpret a photo with the artist’s eye. To me, this is not an automatic artist skill but must be visually and verbally taught. You do a great job of doing that!

Thanks you are a great teacher. Would you please do similar videos for early morning and noon photos?

Phil, thank you so much for this video. Your adjustments look great. And perfect timing. I’m struggling with a painting right now that’s set at a similar time of day, with a very low sun. Logically, it seems that if, say at noon, the horizontal plane (the grass) would get more light and be a lighter value, and the upright plane (the trees) would be darker, things would switch with a low sun. The sun facing side of the trees would become the ‘horizontal’ plane and the grass the ‘upright’ plane. But your adjustments with the bright grass looks right. Am I thinking about this wrong, or does it just look better artistically with the light grass? Thanks!

Hi Patricia, most of the time the grass would will be lighter, The key is don't make any of the planes the same value.

Thanks for this video and others I just started watching. What program are you using to change the colors on your picture? Is it Photoshop? Thanks
