That 2002 SpongeBob bumper was definitely a shot at Cartoon Network who were still airing "old cartoons of yesteryear" alongside their newer cartoons. Cartoon Network was starting to rise up and take over in the early 2000's and Nickelodeon who had reigned supreme in the 90's was now starting to feel threatened. The early to mid 2000's was a great time for both channels.
