History of why this is happening (My Opnion):
Whitty and Julian had met that day and when they were looking for food for Julian and when they went into an alley they find Updyke who soon Julian greets him but Whitty holds him and starts to explain to Julian and they get into an argument and Updyke slowly pulls out the gun and thinking what's going on and letting them talk

Julian: give me food then i will trust you
