    Thanks you so much. My family moved to the US in 1957...I was still a toddler and never did learn to speak Dutch. I'm going to watch all your videos. All the best! NL from LA.

    Hoi
    I'm a noob, and it is you! I'm so glad it is you. I searched all over the web, and all I found were kids tv shows in Dutch with no subtitles.
    HOI!
    I'll be quite now and watch all of your videos. Tell Sanne I'm glad she introduced me to you! But she could have been more clear from the start to just send dorks like me here straight away.
    Full of Awesome! At some point I will say that in Dutch....
    So excited!!!
    Now I need to rewind the whole video.
    Dank U

    Saai (boring) reminds me of "sigh" (something one does when bored). I now have a fascination for Dutch,because I've wanted to visit Belgium and the Netherlands for a very long time now. Also, I just like to learn new things.

    You should also tell about the oe, ui, ieuw, 'cause I noticed that some English friends of mine really didn't get that.. One of my teacher's from New York and after 3 years he still can't pronounce the ui >.

    Hey ;)
    In Dutch we pronounce the 'v' like the 'f'.. the Dutch 'w' sounds like an english 'v' to most English people ^_^
    There definitely is a difference between 'v' and 'w' in dutch, but maybe it difficult for.. foreign people to hear :)
    (An example the other way around - for some/most dutch people it's difficult to hear the different between man and men, because we're not used to those sounds :D )

  • @dutchforn00bs
    @dutchforn00bs  14 лет назад

    @Ceentya I think most languages have several sounds for one vowel. English for example has the a in 'man', but also the a in 'mane'.. we have the a from 'lamp' and the a in 'maan' :)

  • @dutchforn00bs
    @dutchforn00bs  14 лет назад

    Hey :D Thanks for bringing this up ^_^
    I actually had a lot more time between the words in the original video, but I decided to cut it all out, because I was afraid it'd the video unnecessarily long and boring... I kind of figured that the people who want to pronounce things could pause the video, and the people who want to watch can just.. watch?
    Does that make sense?
    I'll keep this in mind, though :D

  • @dutchforn00bs
    @dutchforn00bs  15 лет назад

    Ahh, I just posted a reply, but it disappeared or something!
    Basically what I said was that I thought about what the first video should be for a long time, then I remember that I always want to know the pronunciation first, so I thought I'd start with that :D
    But your idea would be great for the first grammar video ^_^
    And the long and short vowels - I wanted to make a separate video for that, since it's kind of.. confusing :p

    I think that your introduction of the difference between IJ and Y starts off well (personally I've never thought of the IJ as a single letter, but it is of course used in that way).
    I think that it would be good to introduce the IJ: The IJ is used in ijs > ice (cream)
    The odd thing is that Y is not realy used much in Dutch, but IJ is used extensively. As a result the Y is always difficult to use in Scrabble.

    I don't know if you still reply.. but it's odd, I see a lot of tutorials for greetings, but not any that I've found for "goodbye" or "Have a safe trip", that kind of thing.
    I have cousins in the Nederlands, and I'd like to talk to them in their language, instead of them needing to switch to English all the time ^^;;

    When I first started learning german we learnt the alphabet first and then moved onto learning words for each letter like you have so I like the way you're doing this. I knew dutch and german were slightly similar but I never knew the dutch alphabet before... Now I do :D.
    Considering xmas is coming up soon I think it'd be great if you could do a cultural video about that. I've heard you talking about Sinterklaas on BWFNL and it sounded interesting. And I just love christmas xD!

    I've been into Dutch for some time since I fluently speak Swedish and studied German in highschool. I notice a lot of things are similar to German and Swedish, but there are also some similarities to English. Dank je wel!

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 10 лет назад

      That is correct. I am Dutch. German is close and the Scandinavian languages are close too. Most Duthc either think Sweidsh is a singing version of Dutch or they will insist they are not similar at all. They are. I know of Swedes calling Dutch no more than a dialect...I would say that is not true. But they are very similar and easy to learn.

    Most of the letters are the same in Indonesian except for "C", "G", "J", "Q", & "Y".
    C (che): as "ch " in "Charlie".
    G (ge): as "g" in "go".
    J (dze): as "j" in "jet'.
    Q (ki, not kiu or ku).
    Y (ye) as "J" in Dutch.

    @farahadikmuk Although they're quite similar, there is definitely a difference between the pronunciation of V and W :) For the W your (upper) teeth are supposed to be on your bottom lip - a lot more to the front than with the V. (for V I'd say teeth+bottom lip are very close to touching, but it's way on the *back* of your lip). It ALSO has to do with the amount of air.. V releases way more than W :) This is the best I can do.. hope it helps! :)

  • @sepiasunrise
    @sepiasunrise 14 лет назад

    Loved this! You made the sounds really clearly and it was easy to follow. Perhaps it would be good to leave slightly longer after saying one thing before saying the next to give us time to repeat what you've said without rushing or constantly pausing. Actually when you did the alphabet alone the I found the timing wasn't bad but when it came to the words it was a bit more rushed. But then maybe we were just supposed to be listening! But personally I liked having a go at repeating the words.

    It has very little to do with the position of the R in the word. The different pronoun cation is because of the regional different dialects. The dialect in Holland (where Leiden is situated) differs from the Dutch in other parts of the country.

    Although Pronunciation is important while learning a language, I think some areas are more important at first. Try teaching 'ik, jij, hij' etc, possibly paired with one verb, like 'hebben' (to have) in the present time and maybe the simple past. You could use 'zijn' which might be a more obvious choice, but its irregular and therefore confusing and difficult maybe?
    It might also be a good idea to tell about short and long vowels and the diphtongs.
    Good video to get a feel for Dutch though :P

    Ik vind echt dat ons alfabet bestaat uit de 'y' en de 'ij'(aan elkaar)! Zij vormen samen de op een na laatste letter van ons alfabet. We moeten trots zijn op onze ij en om die reden vind ik ook dat de aan elkaar geschreven ij beschikbaar moet worden op de computer.
