    Don’t worry about sharing “too much information”. It’s important to share those parts. It’s your reality. Eating disorders aren’t glamorous and they can be gross. Thank you for sharing your story!!

    I lost my period for about a year and when I got it back, I felt like a failure. To me, not having it was a sign of achievement. And they just suck in general so I enjoyed not having to deal with it haha

      S Smith Doesn't matter if you don't want children. Not having a period is a sign your hormones are in a detrimental state. This can extremely negatively affect your brain and your organs and cause cancer. It can also cause severe mental disorders. I hope you've gotten help by now.

      I know this is a long time ago but maybe this will help someone. Your period is like your monthly report card. It shows your body is functioning as it should. When we are malnourished our bodies will shut down reproduction as it is non essential to our survival and will divert nutrients to keeping your organs functioning. Guess what is also non essential? Having nice hair and skin, these are all connected to hormonal health. And finally bone health! We need adequate levels of estrogen for healthy bones. Not having a period (ie not having healthy levels of hormones) puts you at risk for Osteoporosis. So take it from me as a 35 year old woman whose lost half her hair and has Osteoporosis, you want to have a period! You might not care now but I've had some form of Ed (swing between bulimia and ano behaviours) for 20 years and it's ruined my life. Not worth it!!

    Even when I was a normal weight, my dad told me I was fat and needed to lose weight from a young age (12), so I was avoiding food as much as possible for about 1/2 a year. I lost a bunch of weight (46 pounds, originally 116 pounds) and he was happy until I was sent to the hospital for starving, to get treatment. I'm currently 13 and 99.25 lbs and now anytime I eat I get cramps. You should never let anyone influence how you feel about your looks. Be happy with yourself.

    Just FYI, since Dani didn't mention this in the video and it's hugely important: bone density loss is DIRECTLY linked to not having your period. Don't ask me to explain the science of it, but if you aren't having your period due to low body weight, YOU ARE RAPIDLY AND IRREPARABLY LOSING BONE MASS.
    I'm not saying this to try to scare anyone into getting well. It's just a fact and it's important.
    But here's the thing: as long as you ARE having your period, you're probably not losing a ton of bone mass. You could be right on the edge of losing your period, but as long as you weight just enough that you still menstruate, you won't end up with the bones of a seventy year old woman when you're twenty five.
    WHY is this not common knowledge for anorexics? This should be something every anorexic knows about, so that she can make an informed decision whether brittle, elderly bones is a price she's prepared to pay. I know it won't stop many anorexics from starving. I'm not sure whether it would've stopped me when I was in it. But it's incredibly important info, nonetheless.
    Here's the documentary that talks about this: ruclips.net/video/2-uBZk89qM0/видео.html
    Go to 27:58 for the relevant info.

    • @a.7889-v8f
      @a.7889-v8f 5 лет назад +1

      For some CRAZY reason, even at my lowest of low weights, despite menstruation becoming slightly irregular/it might skip a month here and there, I never really lost my period 😳 I only know this because I would come off the contraceptive pill for a few months (I started taking it at 17 to help my acne) just to see if I was 'thin enough' to have lost my period. I never did. After 8 years of suffering anorexia, at the age of 24 I FINALLY got an opportunity to be treated by one of only 5 'specialised eating disorder psych ward beds' in my whole state. Their psychological management was pretty bad, but their medical monitoring was REALLY GOOD! This resulted in me turning up for my first ever bone density scan and at that point in my life, after 8 years of anorexia, I was at LEAST 'mentally preparing myself' for osteopenia 😬 My mouth absolutely DROPPED when the specialist said (regarding my bone density), "you're right in the middle of 'normal' for your age"... I was like, "how the hell did I get that lucky?!"
      But now you mention the connection between production of hormones for menstruating ALSO effecting bone density, I guess all my years 'taking the contraceptive pill' meant that I was somehow still getting the particular hormones I also needed for bone density! Now after reading this my bone scan results make SO MUCH MORE SENSE!

    • @a.7889-v8f
      @a.7889-v8f 5 лет назад +1

      In 'simple terms', it has to do with the production of certain hormones (e.g. the hormones which cause you to menstruate). If your body is in 'starvation mode', basically your body is 'scared that you're not able to get enough food, so it tries to 'conserve energy' by turning off 'inessential processes' such as your period by REDUCING the production of hormones which allow this to happen.
      Unfortunately, the production of some of these hormones is ALSO essential to gain and keep bone density. So if these hormones have 'shut down' because your body is freaking out that it's starving (which it is), you not only lose your period but you also lose the particular hormones associated with that which give you a normal, healthy bone density. Hope that makes sense!

    My hair and teeth never recovered. My body doesn't hold iron well either. I also had a colonoscopy because I had symptoms of IBS and Crohns. But they never found anything. No one ever suggested an eating disorder until later on. A very important thing nobody told me recovering is that you need to strengthen your core muscles. The ones we use when we sit, stand, walk, bend forward etc. I began exercising lots immidietly and got SO BAD BACKPAIN, I had to take morphine pills. Through the years I've slowly worked it up, with physiotherapists and on my own, so it's better. But before I lost weight I never had any troubles. Now - everyday. So guys and girls - do Yoga, pilates, or another CALM exercise when you're weight restored. Take it easy and slowly strengthen your back, stomach, knees etc. Go SLOW!

I always wanted to know what was happening to her while all this was going on. you can find tons of articles online explaining this disorder but they're usually from the eyes of a medical doctor or psychiatrist; or they're quoting their patient's words. you posted a very informative, organized and eye opening video and I'm glad I found it. I'm happy to see that you look quite healthy and have a cheerful attitude. I hope more of whom have suffered from this disorder can get past it as you have

      Crazily Dani I saw my cousin go through the whole thing for nearly 10 years, she went into therapy a few times and she almost died once before. she was hiding under baggy clothing for a few years then I assumed she gave up on that disguise when it started to show on her face. her skin was gray, she had deep bags under her eyes, her cheeks barely hid the bones underneath, and that's just her face. once she started having to dress for warmer weather, is see that her wrists were just bone, her legs were all bone, she had no fat on her at all, not even the good kind. she was so tiny, wearing kid sizes for clothing. our last conversation was of something trivial but I'll never forget it. to anyone else reading this: I know it's easy to say "don't do it", it's easy to say anything. it's the "doing" part that people get stuck with. I'll never know why she went so far down this path, it's a very personal struggle. I couldn't help her, not her mom or dad or sister, even. they might have tried but it was already too late

    Thank you so, so much for creating this video! I am currently relapsing, recovering, relapsing, recovering, ect. (from *anorexia*) and am trying very desperately to get myself back on track. However, I am experiencing just about every single one of those symptoms that you described (in addition to brain fog), with the exception of sore throat, tooth decay, and osteoporosis (so far as I'm aware, at least!).
    I'm so totally stressed with my body right now that I don't know what to do, how to handle how it's behaving, and how long this suffering will continue. While knowing that some of these things may be with me long-term isn't the most comforting thought in the world, it is nice to know that what's happening is at least somewhat normal. Goodness. I wish I could turn back the clock and have done things differently. :C

    Thanks for the honesty, just wanted to say you can totally make the stretch marks better (almost invisible) through "dry brush massages", it's nothing scary, you can do it at home by yourself, there are videos about it here on yt and it also helps increase the heart rate.
    And good luck to everyone here...🌺

    Honesty is never TMI, my dear... it's helpful. I've been through everything you described, and my teeth? Well, let's just say that the store-bought ones look good (that was a joke). You've done a great service by being so honest about what the disease does to our bodies, and I thank you for it. Stay strong, and never, ever apologize for telling a truth which will (we can hope) help people still in the initial stage where they have a choice... before the hell and the insanity set in. "Seek treatment' is the best advice I've ever heard on one of these recovery videos (my therapist told me to watch due to a bit of a restricting relapse, and for once, I'm doing as told because I do *not* want to take myself back to hell). Seriously, my child, this video has uplifted me. Je te remercie.

      crazilyloved Sisters in recovery... and we have *nothing to be ashamed of*. An illness doesn't mean weak character or bad morals or whatever the uninformed might think. I'll tell you what: there is so much misinformation about eating disorders floating around, and if there's another woman my age willing to be upfront about having suffered for so many decades, I don't know who she is.
      My dear, the treatment fads and theories... from psychics (bogus) to recovered memories (false) to trance channelers (crazy stuff) oh you wouldn't believe what-all they (various therapists) have told/done to me through the years. Hmmm... I might just need to make my own video. Seriously, why not? How many middle-aged women in recovery has *anyone* seen???
      I've done a lot of theater and a few films... don't put it past me... I was anorexic before Lifetime movies, before the internet, before it was cool, before thinspo, before anyone had ever heard the word... ha ha ha! Soldier on!

    Late to find you but thanks for your video! I never considered myself anorexic but have been somewhat underweight most my life (my mom restricted food as a form of punishment) after I got emancipated from that abusive household I turned to opiates which kept me underweight for another 5-6 years. Anyway I have maybe less severe of these long-term effects but still very relatable. Thank you for sharing this information. Much love to you and I dig your style and Irish accent!

      Hi Eisha, no not necessarily. It can depend on how long it was gone for & also other health factors that aren't anorexia related. I know women who naturally got pregnant after having no period for years. I also know another lady who didn't have it for 13 years but with doctors help & 2 of years of ivf treatment she now has a healthy baby girl.

    I SWEAR the digestion problems are one of the most uncomfortable things ever. I hate having someone over or be at somebody else's home because you never know how your body will react if you eat anything or more than the usual.
    Also, I'm glad you made this video, it made me feel less alone since I'm suffering from it for almost 9 years :)
    (Especially at the part with your veins popping out when it's warmer, that's something I just recently talked about with someone :D)
    Is it normal though, that my heart rate is usually around 120? I feel like it should "normally" be lower when you're having Anorexia, but mine has always been so high even though I don't have other blood pressure problems which could cause this.

    i've never been diagnosed with an eating disorder because i think i've been able to hide any symptoms well. but in the back of my head, i know i have an issue. my parents have made comments that i look "anorexic" for years now, but i've never decided to mention anything to them. a few of my close friends know about my issues with food, but that's about it. i started noticing weight loss when i was around 16 and i'm now 21 and currently at my lowest weight and i experience more than half of these symptoms you listed (about 80% of it). i don't know if i have an eating disorder of not, because i've never wanted to self diagnose, but after all the research i've done i think i definitely have something. i'm too afraid to seek for help though, my parents are already very misunderstanding about my other mental illnesses, i don't feel like i need to add another one. :/

    • @melissaswartzel5403
      @melissaswartzel5403 9 лет назад +2

      +stylinzon Are you seeing anyone for your other illnesses? If you are you could mention something to them. Even if (for whatever reason) your parents have some form of custody over you still, any health professional (mental or otherwise) cannot tell them without your consent
      I definitely understand the whole not wanting to add something like that to your parent's plate, especially when there have been previous misunderstandings. Trying to convince my parents that social anxiety not only is an actual thing, but something prevalent in my life, has been and still continues to be one of the most difficult things I've had to do, and now in order to have accommodation that will allow me to take my educator's exams I need further documentation of my LD's which means I need more testing, which has to go through their insurance. Which means that I have to convince them that more than the "specific learning" general assessment made by the school is necessary, and worth $3,000.
      So, sorry I just ranted at you about that, but I know what it's like to not want to add these things to "the list". It does sound to me like you could have an eating disorder, and I really think you could benefit from at least having someone to talk to. I'd say mention something about maybe a potentially unhealthy relationship with food, or abnormal eating habits, or something like that, to a psychologist or psychiatrist if you are seeing one or the next time you go to your gp's office. They should have resources there to help you, and even to help you help your parents to understand. I really hope you get the help you need and understanding care you deserve

    • @crazilydani3975

      It should do, though of course I cannot say for sure because I am not a doctor but I know plenty of people who go back to a balanced nutritious diet regain back their hair loss over time. You're hair reflects your diet 2-3 months ago, so if you have been eating well for over the last few months or more, it should start to come back but it will take time. Be patient and look after yourself, I wish you all the best on your recovery journey!

    Regular with my period so somehow I managed
    To get pregnant after I got married.All.of a sudden, I had new problems that became more important than losing weight. For one thing, we had house payments, doctor visits, utility bills,etc. For the first time I can remember, when the baby was born, there was NO TIME TO OBSESS ABOUT MY WEIGHT. HE SEEMED TO WANT ATTENTION 24/7. WHEN HE SLEPT, I was too tired to think about food. I had a new baby every year and this cured me of my anorexia. I just didn't have time to eat, I wanted to sleep instead

    Hope your are doing better. Some tips for dental health. If you ever do purge, don't brush your teeth before rinsing your mouth out well. Otherwise, you could add to the overall damage of your enamel since residual stomach acid would be remaining on your teeth. Even better, a quick rinse with some baking soda will neutralize the hydrochloric acid. Also include a enamel strengthening toothpaste like Pronamel. Take care!

      Princess Livvie you can get Bio Oil at your chemist/pharmacy (at least in Australia you can!) Just ask someone who works there if they have it 🤷‍♀️ It's in a white box with orange on it and basically you just put some oil on your skin and gently rub it in. I personally used it for self-harm scars BUT that also means that once the scars went white, they didn't disappear anymore 😕 I only found Bio Oil helpful in regards to the fact that it helped speed up the recovery process of my skin and my scars would change from red/purple to white in a MUCH shorter amount of time!
      So it MAY only turn stretch marks white, but it WILL increase the speed in which that happens 😊

    If I go to a doctor In my country they would immediately put me on weight gain or appetizer syrup and milks. Not a very good method but ours is conventional!

      Hey, thanks for sharing. It's good to find out if you are really overeating or not eating enough which makes our bodies uncontrollably want to eat a lot more then we are used to which feels like over eating. For a long time I thought I was over eating but it was my anorexia that thought I was eating a lot but really my body was just eager to get in necessary calories asap. If you are genuinely eating a lot more than a healthy person should eat for their age and activity levels etc then I don't have a simple answer. I still struggle with stress eating sometimes, even if I am eating about 2000 calories. I've worked through a lot of my stress levels because I realised I am in control of whether I get stressed or not. That can help but sometimes it's hard to control stress when very bad things happen. I eat a lot more nutritious foods now, which are less addictive but still give me the nutrients my body really needs. Also they tend to be higher in fibre which fills you up when binging but I don't like fibre in my stomach because I feel very full and uncomfortable but it's better than being full of pure junk with no nutrients. I just try deal with the full feeling it gives me because I can't afford damaging my heart, teeth etc anymore and wasting money spent of good food. Even though I hate the feeling of food in my stomach, I get through it day by day but I don't feel guilty anymore because I'm helping my body and now I finally have respect for my body after all these years. I don't feel guilty anymore when eating because I programmed myself all day everyday until I believed and knew that it's only my anorexic mind that makes me feel that way and in reality food is good, it gives me to energy and strength go on adventures, have a job, go out with friends, feel better, look better etc. It took me 10 years to get to this mindset but I hope you get here much much quicker 💛

    Don't worry about the TMI stuff- when I was sick I wish I knew that the stomach symptoms would literally look just like crohns or ulcerative colitis...I also had to have a colonoscopy only to find out that my ED had fucked up my stomach and exacerbated my IBS :/

    My skin would get really patchy and red. My throat is still sore, my hair thinned and etc etc

      The throat does take time to heal, mine is a lot better now. Even after we consistently eat well, it will take at least a few months before you see improvements in your hair. Certain foods are more beneficial than others for producing healthier hair, as you already know I'm sure 😊 Wishing you lots of health and wellness.

      Mine healed over time. I used to suck on throat sweets but it actually made it worse. Drinking a lot of water can help ease a bit too. Though I did wonder if mine was not 100% restored yet because if I talk a lot it hurts but perhaps that happens to everyone.

    I had that burning pain all over my body too. I could hardly walk, or even lift my arms; the pain was that intense!

    Thanks for this video! Just a question...you got your period back, but it sounded like you were saying your infertility was permanent. Do you know if your fertility came back after having your period back for a while?

    I suffered delayed growth and actually grew two and a half inches at 24_25 the adult height I was supposed to be but was shorter due to malnutrition.
