Жуда фойдали суҳбат бўлибди. ЖСТга қўшилиш аслида дисциплина учун муҳимлиги бўйича фикрлар айниқса муҳим.

The interview turned out very insightful on a number fronts, yet its shortcomings deserve a careful consideration, too. I will lay out my thoughts below:
    1. Professor Javorcik has a correct understanding of benefits of international trade, yet in the same breath, she advocates for a more thorough enforcement of trade sanctions on Russia for geopolitical reasons. If anything, these sanctions contribute to the entrenchment of the Putin regime by essentially equipping Russian propagandists with a potent talking point of “look, the West hates you, ordinary Russian citizens, for simply being Russian”. Punishing Russian consumers with higher prices on goods and services and forcing them into financial seclusion is not in the interests of the Western bloc in this war. They actually need to pursue an opposite strategy and win Russians over by showcasing to them how cruel the regime is instead of jeopardizing their own image.
    2. The issue with FDI, as economist Joe Studwell and others have pointed out, is that multinational companies often reserve the production of highest-value-added services to their home countries, which do not benefit from low labor costs. In other words, activities such as design, branding, marketing, and etc. And it has been well documented that FDI inflows tend to crowd out domestic manufacturers. So a recipient country, if it chooses the path of a complete FDI-reliance, will be forever stuck in the upper-middle income group, as it will not be able to insert itself into the top of global supply chains. To illustrate this: think of a country like Malaysia, which chose the FDI route and compare it with South Korea, which nurtured domestic producers through industrial policy. Being either of the two is undeniably more preferable to the status quo of Uzbekistan. But this should always be a thought to consider.
    3. EBRD is funded by developed countries and, in most cases, doesn’t have the “skin in the game” when choosing investment projects throughout the developing world. So while they support pro-market reforms on paper, their actions are often at odds with a natural development of capital markets with right incentives in the countries that they operate in. Was expecting this question from the interviewer, but in never came up. Wonder why.
That said, the podcast was very well worth my time, and I appreciate the effort of the production team!
